The Yellow Bunny at The Blue Bunny

Though the magic of our Time Machine we are still on the East Coast, and today's a very special day. Why? Because we're visiting The Blue Bunny Books and Toys in Dedham, MA . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Owned by the amazing author/illustrator Peter Reynolds, the small gem of a bookstore is a family affair, with Peter's twin brother Paul around and Janet, Paul's wife running it.

Peter illustrates my friend Megan McDonald's JUDY MOODY books, and Megan and I worked together for American Girl, when she wrote the JULIE books and I wrote her best friend's book, GOOD LUCK, IVY. I'm not going to say, "it's a small world," because that's so cliche. However, it is, after all.

Photobucket Photobucket

Legend has it that Blue Bunny was originally called "The Yellow Bunny Who is Named Peepy." I'm not sure why they changed the name.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Our facebook friend Margie first suggested our visit to the store . . .

Photobucket

(That's Margie on the right, and from the left, Paul Reynold's, Peter's twin, and Cheryl, Moi and Janet, who is the manager, and is married to Paul, which would make her Peter's sister-in-law, and/or would make Peter her husband's brother.)

The event was wonderful and not only did I sign my American Girl books, but the very first copies of my new novel, WARP SPEED, and others!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I got to see old friends and make new ones. The first photo is of author/illustrator David Biedrzycki (not that he's old), and the second is of illustrator Liz Goulet Dubois and her family (they also came to see me HERE!) . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
Paul, who's the CEO of Fablevision, snapped these shots of these readers with their Kanani books . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Peeps was given all sorts of great swag, including a signed edition of Peter Reynold's latest book, ROSE'S GARDEN . . .

Photobucket
Very cool! But the coolest thing of all was how well everyone at The Blue Bunny knew their customers. It was as if they were all friends, which I suspect they were. Of course, Peepy ran around and made new friends, too . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

She was thrilled to hobnob with fellow bunnies and do bunny talk . . .

Photobucket

When we got home, Peepy was sharing her adventures with her dear friend Priscilla. And it so happened that world-traveler Pricilla was looking to settle down, somewhere nice that was friendly to blue bunnies, so she thought she'd check it out . . .

Photobucket

And guess what? Pricilla has a new home!!! Thanks for sending the photo, Margie . . .

Photobucket

Now, I know what you are all thinking. Yes, you're thinking, what do you and Peepy do for security when those rabid fans come too close? Well, here's a little known fact . . . we have our own posse.

While near Boston, a fan got too close to Peepy. Luckily, my posse was there . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I can't reveal the members of my posse, but I can give you a hint about the fearless leader . . .

Photobucket
(Hint: It's National Book Award Winner Jeanne Birdsall!!!!.)

Being in Boston

After our whirlwind time in New York, my Peep and I headed to the Boston area. I was so excited because I thought we were staying on SPLEEN Street. But actually, it was something else . . .

Photobucket

I was going to show you a photo of a real spleen, but it was too gross. So there's this instead . . .

Photobucket

Oops. I digressed. Back to Boston.

We were at Boston/Natick for the last stop of our seven-city American Girl Book Tour . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We even were visited by royalty . . .

Photobucket

During our break, we had a fantastic Hawaiian-themed snack, then Peeps explored the area . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Later, during our American Girl Dinner with the Author, we talked about how our books, ALOHA, KANANI and GOOD JOB, KANANI were created . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We had such a wonderful time on our American Girl -- Kanani Tour.

Photobucket

It was so exciting to visit so many great places, and so many terrific people . . .

28 Hours in NY

Okay, so we were in WARP SPEED, and now we're back on tour for American Girl. When you have a transporter, you can do things like that.

After Atlanta, we flew to New York for the sixth city of our American Girl book tour.

We got in the afternoon, and headed to Scholastic where many of my other books are published, like WARP SPEED which is out this week! And look, it's my editor, Arthur Levine, and the picture book he authored, MONDAY IS ONE DAY . . .

Photobucket

It's always fun seeing Tracy van Straaten, VP of publicity, who coined the phrase, "Got Peeped." Here she is with my publicist, Lauren Felsenstein who was celebrating her birthday . . .
Photobucket

Later, Peepy had a top secret meeting with Stacy Lellos, VP of marketing. (Peeps is trying to get buzz for her epic memoir/fashion tips book.)

Photobucket Photobucket

Soon it was time for Peepy's interview with Michael Strouse who's not only the manager of the Scholastic Store, but he blogs for Scholastics OOM (On Our Mind) . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

The interview was great, and Michael even interviewed me, too.

Photobucket CLICK HERE to read and see it!

Suddenly, it was dinner time. Luckily, author Sarah Darer Littman came to town! It was a working dinner, since Sarah and I are creating a new blog/website called Dear Author, featuring hilarious and heartwarming letters fans have written to their favorite authors. When it debuts, you will be the first to know!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

The next day, I Google mapped the entire city of New York. (I get lost very easily.)

Photobucket

Peepy and I were looking forward to meeting my/our agent, Jodi Reamer of Writer's House, for lunch at the Monkey Bar. Peeps couldn't wait to see the monkeys . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

While Jodi was agenting on the phone, Peepy felt slighted. However, Jodi made it up to her by sharing a slice of chocolate cake . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

After cake, it was time for a book signing at the NY American Girl Place near Rockefeller Plaza . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We signed lots of KANANI books!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

It was fun meeting young readers, library students, and Kanani fans . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Peeps was exhausted from talking to everyone, but insisted on hanging out even more friends . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

When we left the store, it was dark outside . . .

Photobucket

We headed to the totally delicious Turkish Kitchen for dinner with Storyworks editor/author Lauren Tarshis and author Tommy Greenwald. (I've got a short story coming out soon in Storyworks magazine!)

Photobucket

What a wonderful whirlwind visit to NY. We slept well that night!

3 . . . 2 . . 1 . . . WARP SPEED Launches Today!!!

I know we were in the middle of our American Girl Tour Across Everywhere, but we're taking a slight detour. Do you know what today is?

Read this to find out . . .

Photobucket

Your are right! (I didn't know you could read Klingon.) Today's the official debut of my ninth novel . . . WARP SPEED!!!!

Photobucket

Warp Speed is about Marley Sandelsky, a Star Trek geek who gets beat up everyday at school.

Photobucket Photobucket

Whenever a new book comes out, I get all weird.

Photobucket

(Okay, so I get all weird whenever a book isn't coming out, too, but let's not dwell on that.)

You write alone. Unless you're one of those authors who writes at Starbucks or another place, usually involving coffee. However, my best writing happens when I am all by myself. Mostly because I am not good at drinking coffee, plus I don't like people looking at me when I write.

Photobucket

(That's a corner of my office, above. When I write there, no one can find me.)

After I finish writing a book, la la la la la . . . it's a blissful time of unicorns and double rainbows . . . until about a month before the book comes out. Then it's utter panic. Like, I-am-a-wreck panic. Why? Because the of the Impending Doom a.k.a. Impending Reviews . . .

Photobucket

Some authors don't read their reviews. They don't need the approval of others to know that they are good, because they are mature and have self-confidence. I am not one of those authors. Instead, whenever my editors send me a review, I read it with one eye shut to minimize the damage to my corneas in case the review is so harsh that it sears into my eyeballs and causes permanent damage.

Photobucket

Luckily for my family (because my self-pity would be HUGE and I would become impossible to live with), I can keep writing! (At least until the reviews for the next book.)

Here are some WARP SPEED reviews . . .

Photobucket

There are some people who I'd like to thank. They survived being around me during the writing of WARP SPEED. So kudos to my amazing editors, Arthur Levine and Cheryl Klein.

Photobucket Photobucket
(Dan Santat drew these photo-realistic illustrations.)

Thank you to Hubby and Teen who put up with me denouncing bullies every night at dinner, and speaking Klingon, and acting like a middle schooler. (I tend to morph into my characters.) And a special thanks to Son, who listened to rough chapters of the novel every day after school and gave me valuable input.

Son also offered wonderful insight, like when he said, "Rats. Rats? No one in middle school says, 'rats.'" Sadly, he gave me this pearl of wisdom after he read the ARC. So if you see the word "rats," ignore it.

Also, I got the solar system wrong – Son pointed that out too. Who knew that Earth was not the biggest planet? (Don't answer that.)

Photobucket
(BTW, I found the crocheted planets here)

Accuracy is impartant to me. Er, important to me. So I turned to these three guys for help writing the books. Later I'll blog about who they are, what they did, and why they look so . . . interesting.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Thank you everyone who worked on WARP SPEED!

Come help us celebrate at the OFFICIAL LAUNCH PARTY!!!
Here's the video invite for the WARP SPEED and BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) Launch Party . . .

Whoa . . . Peep Explosion in Atlanta

After Peepy got styled in Dallas, we headed out for the second leg of my American Girl seven-city book tour. Atlanta was next . . .

Photobucket

We were greeted by Russ, who give us the FIRST MARSHMALLOW PEEPS OF THE SEASON!!! (Stay for the dramatic explosion of the Peeps at the end of this blog.)

Photobucket

Before our American Girl Lunch with Lisa Yee -- er, I didn't eat lunch with Lisa Yee, but others did, Peepy and I signed books for the attendees as the room was set up . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

There was a great group of girls and women, and even a brave brother and a dad . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I talked about writing and creating the Kanani's 2011 Girl of the Year books, and everyone asked terrific questions . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

When I mentioned that I LOVE Winnie-the-Pooh, and have the 2nd largest collection in America, one of the guests let me meet her Pooh bear. She's had him since she was a baby!

Photobucket

Next it was time to sign books . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

It was cool because lots of people who came have been to Hawaii, including this woman who was married on Kaua'i where Kanani's stories take place . . .

Photobucket

She even bought books for her daughter . . . to read when she's older . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Other fans included these three who dressed alike, Ana, a friend from facebook, and a Kanani look-a-like . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(When the last picture was taken, someone said, "Look, the author has all her teeth!" I wasn't sure how to respond to that, but then learned that the girl had five teeth missing. LOL!)

It was especially nice to meet the girls of the Blue Moon Book Club. They picked ALOHA, KANANI to read together . . .

Photobucket

Before it was time to speak at Dinner with Lisa Yee, Peeps wandered around, chatted with friends, and had a snack . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Soon it was time for dinner . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

It was so much fun talking with everyone! And even more fun was in store for us because . . .

WE HAD A MICROWAVE IN OUR HOTEL ROOM!!!!

And we had those marshmallow Peeps that Russ gave us . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Ah, the perfect ending to a great day!!!!

Photobucket

If you'd like to view a video of marshmallow Peeps in a microwave, here's one!

And finally, who do you think is my fav Star Trek character? Do I always have Asian characters in my books? Did my IQ get higher or lower once I had kids? Find out the answers to two of these questions by CLICKING HERE. Yes! I was interviewed over at AArisings, "da entertainment resource about Asian Pacific Americans"!

Peepy Gets Dallas-Styled

Recently, my Peep and I flew from Minneapolis to Dallas for our American Girl, KANANI, book tour . . .

Photobucket

The flight was a nice one, especially since 1) there was no one sitting next to us, and 2) I was reading an ARC (advanced readers copy) of Jeanne Birdsall's new THE PENDERWICKS AT POINT MOUETTE. (It's brilliant, and I'm trying to read it slowly to savor each page.)

Photobucket Photobucket
(See that man in the photo. I'll bet he was sooooo jealous that I had the book and he didn't.)

Our hotel was IN the Dallas Galleria, and there was an ice skating rink there. Even though I had my blizzard clothes all packed, I decided not to do triple sawcows (or whatever they are called) on the ice . . .

Photobucket

I had a WONDERFUL dinner at this brand new place called Grand Lux Cafe, and liked it so much that I ate there the next day, too . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(Later my waitress told me that it's not new, it's a chain that The Cheesecake Factory is rolling out. If they ask me to be the spokesmodel for it, I will.)

The Dallas American Girl Store ordered spectacular weather for me, and it was in the 70's!
Photobucket Photobucket

We had a great time . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Peepy was particularly pleased because she got to explore the store and hang out with her friends . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

As you know, Peepy loves to be pampered. She was thrilled to see the salon, and immediately made an appointment . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

We didn't think it was possible, but Chris made Peeps look even more beautiful than normal . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Afterward, Peepy was so exhausted (beauty is hard work), she took a nap . . .

Photobucket

Oh look! It's a LA TIMES review of books about bullies, and WARP SPEED is included.

Live in the Boston area? I'll be at the Natick American Girl store this Friday.
Plus, I'll be signing WARP SPEED and my other books at The Blue Bunny Books and Toys this Saturday, February 26th at 11 am. in Dedham, MA.

Klingon-esque Warp Speed Party Video

I know that last blog I said we'd be blogging about Dallas today, but we interrupt our own American Girl book(s) tour blogs (having been here and here and here) to bring you this exciting news . . .

WARP SPEED and BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) LAUNCH PARTY
March 13, 2011 at 2 pm
Vroman's Pasadena

In honor of this, the handsome and talented Dan Santat, illustrator of the BOBBY series, and I made this Oscar-worthy (Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Original Script, Best Direction, Best Special Effects, Best Costume, Best Editing, Best Klingon) video invite!!!!

But first, here's an exclusive behind-the-scene photo expose of the shoot . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Only, we weren't able to shoot as much at Vroman's as we wanted, because Dan's video camera batteries were (both) dead.

However, like Captain Kirk, we didn't let that stop us! While Dan's batteries were recharging, I went home and learned how to speak Klingon. (I watched lots of Star Trek clips and tried to imitate them -- and later realized that all the Klingons I saw were MEN and that's why I was speaking so deeply!!!)

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Here's the video. Be sure to hang around for the BLOOPERS. We almost couldn't make this because we were laughing so hard . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Live in the Boston area? I'll be signing WARP SPEED and my other books at The Blue Bunny Books and Toys on February 26th in Dedham, MA at 11 a.m. . . .
Photobucket

This month, also look for me at the American Girl stores in these cities . . .

Peepy Conquers the Mall of America

Let's see. Where were we?

Oh, yes! Los Angeles and Chicago, as part of our American Girl Book Tour. The next stop was Minneapolis. Peepy was quite excited when we checked into the hotel, because she her own bunk bed(s)!!!

Photobucket

It was funny, because everyone kept telling me, "We're having a heatwave." (But it was in the 40's -- that's freezing to me!) Still, I braved the cold and decided to walk to the Mall of American where the American Girl Place is . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

After dropping off our coat and sweater and two pairs of gloves and hat and earmuffs, Peeps and I explored THE BIGGEST MALL IN AMERICAN . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(Yes, there's a THEME PARK in the middle of the mall.)

When it was time for our 2011 Girl of the Year book signing, it was so cool to make new friends . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And I finally got to meet Sarah Park, my facebook friend. She brought in BOBBY VS. GIRLS (ACCIDENTALLY), and some of my other books!

Photobucket

The store was filled with girls and their moms and grandmas and friends, but we actually saw a couple of American Girl Guys . . .

Photobucket
(They were security guards!)

Later, there was a special Kanani dinner. I spoke to the guests about how the books were created. There were also hula lessons and crafts!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Peepy was exhausted from doing the hula, so she had to take a nap before we met up with our author friend . . .

Photobucket

Before we left, we got gifts!!!!

Photobucket Photobucket

Um. I thought that there was a typo on the notebook. But was told that "UFF DA!" is a common phrase in Minneapolis. It means, uh, uff da.

Dinner was a total blast, and that's because we got to see our good friend David LaRochelle. David is an author and a pumpkin carver and game show/contest winner and . . .

Photobucket Photobucket
(I first met David when he won the Sid Fleischman Humor Award and I was one of the judges.)

Next stop on our tour . . . DALLAS!!!!

Chillin' in Chicago -- The American Girl Tour Continues

After kicking off our American Girl book tour in Los Angeles, we headed here . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

That's right. Chicago! We love the area and were there not too long ago.

Even though I am a wimp when it comes to cold weather, Peepy loved it . . .

Photobucket

That night before the event, while I signed books and posters in my hotel room, Peepy modeled the Chicago baseball outfit American Girl gave her . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I wrote the 2011 Girl of the Year books, ALOHA, KANANI and GOOD JOB, KANANI. And Kanani was everywhere! Here's the outside of the store . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And here's the inside . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Peepy also got to meet up with her friend, Ivy. (I wrote another American Girl book called, GOOD LUCK, IVY.)

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Plus, Peeps got to hang out with awesome author Andrea Beaty . . .

Photobucket

Then it was time for the book signing . . .

Photobucket

Kanani and the tropical island of Kaua'i (CLICK HERE for photos of me in warmer weather) caused quite a stir in the Windy City. There was a non-stop line for two hours!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Soon it was time to head to the airport. But first we got to visit with Ilene Cooper, Booklist children's book editor and author of the marvelous ANGEL IN MY POCKET. (This book was so utterly charming that I even blurbed it!). Ilene introduced Peepy and I to mocha toffee pie . . .

Photobucket

NEXT STOP: Minneapolis and the American Girl Place at the Mall of America. Can you guess what Sid Fleischman Award-winning author we got to eat dinner with?
