Chicago Night and Gooey Butter Cake Day . . .

Okay, so where were we?

Oh, yes. In the Chicago area!

Well then, on our last night Peepy and I visited the Vernon Area Public Library . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Peepy was thrilled to find this incredible shrine devoted to her . . .
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Meanwhile, in another part of the library, there was a Parent/Child Book Discussion about STANFORD WONG FLUNKS BIG-TIME going on. So many signed up that there was a waiting list!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

While they were wrapping up, we got ready for our presentation, and then the doors opened and over one million (or maybe 100-ish) people streamed in . . .
Photobucket Photobucket

Uber librarian Eileen Glazick introduced us . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We had a wonderful time! Plus, author Brenda Feber bought us some yummy Skinny Pop!!!
Photobucket

The next day it was off to St. Louis where our first stop was, naturally, the library!!!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Lunch with these tres chic librarians was on the menu, and dessert was included . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(Oh man, you've gotta try this St. Louis treat -- Gooey Butter Cake!!!)

We made sure to get a good night's sleep because we had a big day in front of us.

Chicagoland Peep

We stayed at Hotel Indigo and loved it. There was even an in-room swimming pool for Peepy!!!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We were in possession of a bag of Garrett's popcorn. Plus we had time on our hands. So, because we ate a healthy lunch, we felt it was okay, our patriotic duty even, to consume the entire bag of caramel/cheese mixture . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Later, we walked it off and Peepy made new friends . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

On Monday, we were off to Fremont Middle School. Here's the gym before the students arrived . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

We were afraid the projector wouldn't work, because on the flight we had to gate check our luggage and watched them TOSS the suitcase onto the cart. But HOORAY everything was fine!
Photobucket Photobucket

Look! It's the Fremont 6th, 7th and 8th graders . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Later, Peeps went to the library and made more friends . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Lunch with librarian Trudi Snavely was a blast. We went to Caboose . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Next door was the coolest auto repair shop I've ever seen!!!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Next Blog: One million (or maybe one hundred-ish) people show up to meet Peepy at the Vernon Area Public Library!

Photobucket

PLUS, find out what state Peepy and Moi traveled to next and what delectable treat we got to eat . . .

Peepy Takes over North Carolina, Plus Art Everywhere

Recently Peepy and I were invited to the North Carolina School Library Media Association Conference (hereby known as the NCSLMACXYZ) . . .

Photobucket

I had taken a 3:30 a.m. shuttle from my house to LAX, and then two planes, and then a car to Winston-Salem. Yes, I was pooped. However, I perked up at the book signing reception that night because look who I got to sit next to!

Photobucket Photobucket

That's right! It was our friend, the famous and funny and controversial and New York Times bestselling author Lauren Myracle! (She tried to get give Peepy a sip of her beer. Should we ban her?)

Later, we got to dine at this wonderful soul food restaurant with these amazing librarians and teachers . . .
Photobucket Photobucket
(Everyone is gathered around a basket of delicious sweet potato fries. Fun fact: 50% of all sweet potatoes are from North Carolina. I know it's true because I heard it on television.)

On our way up to our room we ran into Newbery winner Cynthia Kadohata in the lobby. (She had her pint of ice cream with her!) The last time we saw our pal she was at the IRA Conference . . .

Photobucket
(Cynthia and I live relatively close to each other, but I see her more in other states than at home.)

Soon it was time to crash. But first we did the bedbug check and gave the room an all clear . . .
Photobucket
(Above: Photo of no bedbugs.)

I had the BIGGEST room, ever. It even came with a conference table with eight chairs! (Peepy held lots of meetings there.)

Photobucket Photobucket

The next day, we ventured through The Magic Tunnel to the conference center . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(The last photo is of people entering the room before our workshop.)

When it was time for our keynote speech at the grand luncheon, we found these secret undercover photos of the getting ready . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Once everyone started coming in, Peepy tried to claim the Ghiradelli Chocolate door prize. (She didn't win, but was consoled by her dessert.)

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We had a great time giving our speech because we got to gaze at this gorgeous audience . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

And look who was listening to us! Yes, Newbery Honor Winner Kirby Larson. The last time we saw our pal she was at the IRA Conference . . .

Photobucket

After the conference, it was time to explore the Winston-Salem Arts District . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Later in the evening the streets were closed. StoryLline, a local storytelling project was there. Plus everyone was invited to draw on the road, and we came across a homage to Peepy!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

BTW, when I was looking for the link to the Storyline (above), I came across this Storyline. It's a website of famous people reading children's books . . .

Photobucket

Now, Peepy's waiting for them to call her to read a book!

A couple of weeks ago I was in Arlington, VA speaking at this SCBWI conference. Later, a couple of bloggers who attended asked if they could interview me and give me a year's worth of free housecleaning and Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. (Two of those things aren't entirely true.)

So of course, I said "Of course!" You can CLICK HERE to read the interview and find out what I learned from Stephen King.

Photobucket

Hey! If you're in the Chicago area, come by and see me on Monday, November 8th at 7 p.m. I'll be at the Vernon Area Public Library! CLICK HERE for details!
Photobucket

Photobucket

Live in or near St. Louis? I'll be at the St Louis Public Library, Schlafly Branch, on Wednesday, November 10 from 6 - 7 p.m. And get this . . . they will be giving away FREE copies of ABSOLUTELY MAYBE and STANFORD WONG FLUNKS BIG-TIME, while supplies last. CLICK HERE for more info.

Pumpkins and Peeps and Camp Read-a-Loud

Peepy and I had a lovely Halloween, thankyouverymuch. (Although she insisted on wearing ALL her costumes that evening.)

Photobucket

We even gave out some books disguised as candy!

Photobucket
(Oh wait. I hope no one tried to eat them.)

Of course, Halloween wouldn't be Halloween without my dear friend, author David LaRochelle and his amazing pumpkins! Look at what he created this year . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket

Halloween wasn't the only fun we had last week! We were invited to Clairbourn School's Camp Read-a-Lot . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

It was held in conjunction with their annual Book Fair . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Peepy had to be reminded not to get too close to the fire when she was roasting marshmallows!

Photobucket

The last time I was at Clairbourn School, I had lunch with Academy Award winner (and school parent) Marlee Matlin . . .
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
(BTW, not only is she super nice, but she had the most amazing skin.)

So, I wondered if I would be having lunch with another actor/actress again this year?

Anyway, it was so fun talking to all the students in grades five, six, seven and eight . . .
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

It was also a blast because my good friend Betty Birney was there speaking to the lower grades. Plus, it's always wonderful to see Anita Knight, the awesome school librarian . . .

Photobucket Photobucket
(Anita has a set of these cool author autograph books.)

Then it was time for lunch. When I walked into the library, it had been transformed into a cool camp (with catering!)

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

(Oh man, if I ever went to place like that, with books and caterers, I wouldn't have cried at camp.)

But here's the BEST part. LOOK! LOOK! LOOK who was there to have lunch with me . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Yes! Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy!!!! Swoon.

We spent the rest of the day together, and he even told me that he read all my books . . .
Photobucket

When it was time to leave, we could not be parted. So now, he's in my office to offer me encouragement when I write . . .
Photobucket

However, Son thinks that Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy is a distraction . . .
Photobucket

Thanks, Clairbourn, for Mr. Darcy and the fine swag . . .
Photobucket

Okay. Gotta go now. The Toymaker sent me this candid photo, so I have to go stare at it for hours . . .
Photobucket

Oh wait! One more thing. If you're in the Chicago area, come by and see me on Monday, November 8th. I'll be at the Vernon Area Public Library! CLICK HERE and scroll down for details!

Peepy Halloween!!!

Instead of blowing up Peeps (as in the marshmallow kind, not as in this one) this Halloween, Peepy has decided to stage a fashion show.

Here she is modeling some of her many costumes/couture outfits that her close friends have sent her . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

However, since so many of you may be expecting a Halloween explosion of sorts, here's the video Son and I made, of Peeps in jeopardy. Plus a photo retrospective of a couple of Halloween's past . . .

2009 . . .

That was okay, but then Son thought . . . hmmmm . . . taping a Peep to a plate . . .

All this really disturbed Peepy. (For the record, she is a non-edible Plush Peep, not a marshmallow.) So she said . . . hmmm . . . look! Leftover Peeps from Easter. Try making something pretty!

(For the record, she is in her taco costume.)

So we did . . .

That was soooo fun!!! Except for clean up . . .

2008 . . .

Scary Bugs, Spectacular Conference

Having a healthy imagination, I will often throw myself into a tizzy regarding the latest scary thing out there. In the past this has included spinach carrying the e coli bacteria, lack of fiber in my diet, and the economy.

My latest tizzy? This . . .

Photobucket
(Bugs in photo are larger than in real life.)

Yes, bedbugs.

I travel A LOT, and just know that the little buggers are laying in wait to attack me, then to hitch a ride home with me to infest my house and loved ones.

Before I left for Arlington, VA, I checked out the Bedbug Registry. Noooo, it's not where bedbugs say what wedding gifts they want -- it's a place where you can find out where they hang out . . .
Photobucket

Hooray! My hotel was not on the list. But to make sure, I did my own checking, and gave it an "all clear" . . .

Photobucket
(Above: Photo of no bedbugs.)

Phew! That meant I could enjoy my time at the SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) Mid-Altantic Conference without itching. (Bedbugs bite.) And enjoy, I did!

We received such a warm welcome . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(Peepy was so excited to receive her own very special name tag, that she has renamed the SCBWI to "SCBWIP" - Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and Peep.)

It was fun seeing old friends (as in "I've known you before," not as in "Man, you have aged!") and new. Here are agents Sarah Davies and Jill Corcoran, with author Sarah Lewis Holmes waving her hands, trying to get Peepy's attention . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

It was great to hear former lawyer and current National Book Award Finalist Kathryn Erskine speak. Later, she and Peepy bonded over their matching accessories . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

I had my matching-accessory-situation. Remember my love for my Book Book? That is, my laptop cover that looks like a book . . .
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Well . . . someone else at the conference had a Book Book, too!!!!

Photobucket

Yes! Super editor, Andrea Tompa from Candlewick Press had the exquisite good taste to own one.

Only, then I thought, hmmmmm . . . what if our Book Books got switcheroo-ed? Then what? Would Andrea really want a MacBook full of photos of my dog? (Well, probably, yes since Puppy is so cute.)

Photobucket

Still, I felt I needed to come up with a genius solution to the possible switcheroo situation. Here's what I did . . .

Photobucket

I put my name on my Book Book! (At first I was going to write it on the front, then DUH . . . it should go on the spine!)

Oops, back to the convention. Soon it was time to critique manuscripts. That's where you sit down one-on-one and discuss writer's WIP (work-in-progress) . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

After, it was time for the faculty and fabulous volunteers to be fed in high style . . .
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Fortified with delicious food and equally delicious lunch conversation, it was time to deliver our keynote address to these talented, witty and smart writers and illustrators . . .
Photobucket Photobucket
(I was so "moved" by everyone's beauty, that I "moved" the camera on purpose, hence the blurred photos. Get it? Moved? Moved? Hahahaha . . . what? No? Um. Okay. Never mind.)

The conference ended with a panel of editors giving away trade secrets. Here's Andrea with Scholastic editor Jenne Abramowitz and from Houghton Mifflin, Erica Zappy . . .
Photobucket

And now, to atone for the bedbug photo, here's something small, but entirely cute . . .

MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON from Dean Fleischer-Camp on Vimeo.

Bobby Braves Children's Book World ... and Has a Blast!

The last time I visited Children's Book World, I had a Newbery winner, the editor of the Harry Potter series, and maggots in my car . . .

(Note: This is a pretend maggot that hangs in my office. If you are brave, or a 12-year old boy, CLICK HERE to see what real maggots look like.)

I happy to announce that my latest visit was maggot-free! Children's Book World had arranged for me to visit with some local schools.

I left my house TWO HOURS early, thinking it wouldn't take that long to drive 16 miles. I even brought the newspaper and some work, since I knew I'd have plenty of time . . .

Photobucket

Like Millie in MILLICENT MIN, GIRL GENIUS, I'd rather be "one hour early, than one minute late."

However, I hadn't counted on terrible, awful, horrendous, yucky, crummy, rotten traffic . . .

Photobucket

In one hour, I had gone four miles. So I got off the freeway, sped along side streets, and made it with zero time to spare. Here's one of the classes that was waiting for me . . .

Photobucket

And here's everyone reacting when I asked, "Who can solve our nation's financial crisis?"

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(Actually, I didn't ask that question. However, these kids are so smart, I'll bet they could have solved it!)

We had soooooo much fun taking about how BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) and other books got written! Afterward, I went to Children's Book World . . .

Photobucket

The kids bought books ahead of time, I signed, and the books were delivered to their schools that very afternoon!

Photobucket Photobucket

Later, some students even came to the store so we could talk about . . . BOOKS!!!

Photobucket

Speaking of books, here's the spectacular Sharon, the store's owner . . .
Photobucket

And here's her spectacular store . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Ah, don't you just love indie bookstores!!!!

Since we were talking books, here's more BOBBY news. Recently, Scholastic kid reporter, Alexis "Lexie" Cornell interviewed me.

Photobucket

You can read the interview HERE!. And CLICK HERE for her review of BOBBY, plus here's another fun review about the book!

There's more BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) . . . I recently had a Goodreads free book giveaway. There were over ten million or maybe 587 entries, and here's the winner who was selected at random . . .

Photobucket

I was thrilled to learn it's someone I know! Paloma was in a writer's workshop I taught at the Santa Monica Library!

Can you find Paloma in the photo below?

It's Beans for Authors, Animators and Illustrators

When last we were together (you and Moi), I was scarin' the heebeejeebies out of Son . . .

Photobucket

But enough of that! On to less scary stuff. Namely, my pal Jarrett Krosoczka.

When last we (Jarrett and Moi) were together, we were eating ice cream in Northampton . . .

Photobucket Photobucket
(Author/National Book Award Gal Jeanne Birdsall was with us, too. Because ice cream always tastes better when Jeanne is around.)

Well, Jarrett has much fun, he decided to travel all the way to Pasadena just to see me!!!! (Oh, and maybe he had meetings and a school visit, too.) BTW, Jarrett's LUNCH LADY series is going to be a movie starring Amy Poehler!

Photobucket

So, a bunch of author/illustrator types decided to get together and meet at the Apple Store in Old Town Pasadena. Peeps and I got there first, so we decided to play around with the computers -- which is a scary thing for all Apple products, everywhere . . .

Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Then . . . hooray! Author/illustrator/animator Mr. Tom Warburton showed up. (He was one of our judges once.)

Photobucket

Then . . . hoorah! Author/illustrator/animator Bob Boyle showed up. (He was one of our judges once.) However, he was so busy paying attention to the computers, that he had no idea his gorgeous wife and Mr. Warburton were telling embarrassing stories about him . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Soon, chauffer/friend/author/illustrator Dan Santat brought the out-of-towner in . . .
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And then it was time for fine cuisine at Barney's Beanery. Try to guess which photos are of my office and which ones are of the Beanery . . .
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Dinner was a blast! Then suddenly Jarrett leapt up and ran.

Photobucket Photobucket

Why? Was it the beans?

Photobucket

Eew. No. I can't believe you would even ask that. It was because he had the great and grand idea of EATING and PLAYING foosball at the SAME time . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Ah, such fun! However, I had to leave early because I don't have Tivo.

That, and because I don't have a DVR. Or a VHS. Or anything, really, and Ghost Hunters was on. One of their producers had been in touch with me because the show was on the Thurber House, where I had lived when I was the Thurber Children's Writer-in-Residence. And while I was there, yes. I met The Ghost.

Here's Ghost Hunters, and Julia DeVillers and I in front of Thurber House . . .

Photobucket Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
(Julia now lives in RUSSIA!!!)

I would tell you about the ghost, but I don't want you to think I'm weird. I dunno. Maybe I'll write about it someday.

In Praise of Public Radio

I listen to NPR all the time. Here's my KPCC member card . . .

Photobucket

I love listening to shows like Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, produced by author pal Emily Ecton . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Here's when Peepy and I went to the taping of one of the shows . . .

(We got their tres early.)

I've been on NPR, too! CLICK HERE to listen to me babble on KQED.

Photobucket
(Oops. This is what happens to me when I babble too much.)

Wait, wait, don't tell me . . . back to NPR. One time, uber librarian/action figure Nancy Pearl talked about the best opening lines in kids' books. She even mentioned Millicent Min, Girl Genius . . .

Photobucket

"I have been accused of being anal retentive, an over achiever and a compulsive perfectionist, like those are bad things."

Here's Nancy ridding the world of bad guys . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

You can CLICK HERE to hear Nancy talk Millicent. And to read an excerpt from MILLICENT MIN on NPR's website, CLICK HERE.

So anyway, I was thrilled when last week I got to hear NPR-ian Ira Glass in person . . .

Photobucket

He talked about how the shows are produced for This American Life.

Photobucket Photobucket

Peepy complained that she wasn't going to be able to see him . . .

Photobucket

However, that's okay. Ira opened the show with the lights out and we pretended we were listening to him on the radio!

Photobucket

Here's Ira on Letterman talking about chicken(s) . . .

So last night, Son was having trouble falling asleep. Being the loving and helpful mom that I am, I suggested he listen to some This American Life. I had downloaded it from last week, when the topic was sleep . . .

Photobucket

An hour later, a TOTALLY wide awake Son comes into my office and says, "Did you they talked about THE SHINING???"

Photobucket Photobucket

Oops. I had listened to it, but was thinking about the segment when a fellow thinks he's the Hulk when he falls asleep. Not the segment where a kid watches THE SHINING and it ruins his childhood because he can never sleep again.

So sorry, Son. My bad. I'm not sure what's worse. What I did to Son this week . . . or a couple of years ago.

But I meant well. Honest!

Hey, speaking of kids, I'll be speaking to several classes on Tuesday, thanks to Children's Book World in Los Angeles.

Originally, I was going to speak at the store, but there were so many requests, we've been moved to an nearby school auditorium. However, after (around 11:45ish?) I'll be signing stock at the store, if you want to drop by!

Next Blog: Find out who Peepy's been hanging out with . . .

Photobucket

And finally, via Fuse #8's blog . . .

Ozzy and Harriet and Mrs. Nelson and Elmo and Bobby and Baby and Me

I got to visit Mrs. Nelson's place this weekend . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Oops. Not that Mrs. Nelson's. This Mrs. Nelson's . . .

Photobucket

OMG. I just realized. Many of you probably have no clue who Harriet Nelson is! In case you're wondering, here's the scoop.

Fun fact: The Ozzie on the left had a television show about his family LONG before the Ozzy on the right . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Anyway, Peepy and I were at Mrs. Nelson's Toy and Book Shop in La Verne, CA for a book signing!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Here's Moi with authors Barrie Summy and Amy Goldman Koss . . .

Photobucket

Peeps got to pal around with some of her friends, too. (However, she refused to share her cookies.)

Photobucket Photobucket

And get a load of this! Our friend Sophia was there, and she HANDMADE this totally awesome necklace for us. That's a picture of me on it . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Doesn't Peepy look great? Speaking of great-looking people, a while back, purely as a public service, I blogged about the Old Spice Guy . . .

Well, it looks like the Old Spice Guy has some serious competition . . .

I know. I know. They're both great, aren't they!!!

Photobucket Photobucket

Hey, are you on Goodreads? Sunday is the last day to enter to win an autographed copy of BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES)!!! Check out the giveaway details at Goodreads. And ENTER TO WIN!
