Helping Save the Hawaiian Monk Seals

Okay, so on Day One we were on Kaua'i doing this. And then we did this. Then we took a WARP SPEED detour. However, now we're back in Kaua'i, thanks to our oh-so-handy Time Machine!

While tooling around the island, we stopped and shopped and surfed . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Later, we went to hear Dr. Charles Littnan talk about Hawaiian monk seals. In my American Girl stories, Kanani helps rescue a monk seal pup that she nicknames "Malana." Plus, Kanani also raises money to help save the seals. (There are only about 1,100 Hawaiian monk seals left in the entire universe!)

Photobucket
(Charles is on the right, and no, that's not a monk seal he's with, that handsome fellow is Tim Robinson, my seal consultant for the American Girl/Kanani books!)

Hawaii Stream was there to interview us. Here I am, explaining geometry, string theory, and why Toxoplasma gondii is the enemy of monk seals . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Charles was also interviewed. However, he found it hard to discuss the seals because the beauty that is Peepy was so distracting . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

So, of course, she ended up being interviewed, too . . .

Photobucket

Here's the VIDEO INTERVIEW. It also includes, Sue Kanoho of the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau, KMSWP volunteers, and my American Girl editor, Jennifer Hirsch . . .

The talk was fascinating and informative, especially since we had the Lead Scientist of the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program there. Yes, that's right. My Peep. She taught Charles everything there was to know about the seals . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

After the presentation, everyone who donated to the KMSWP was given a free signed Kanani book . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(Some of the names were hard to spell, so Peeps had to help me out.)

And here's some great news . . . for every plush Malana the monk seal sold, American Girl will donate $1 to the National Wildlife Federation, to help save the seals and other endangered animals!

Blast Off with the WARP SPEED Book Trailer!!!

We interrupt our Kauai blogging to take a trip in our Time Machine . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Before leaving for Hawaii to talk about the American Girl Kanani books, Scholastic sent a video crew from Stretch Media over to shoot the WARP SPEED book trailer. Of course, the crew was smitten by my Peep . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And here's the BOOK TRAILER!!!!

Speaking of books, guess who made the Bank Street "Best Children's Books of the Year" list? I'll give you a hint:

Photobucket Photobucket

YES! You are so smart!!! BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) made the list!!!!

Next blog, we'll return to Kaua'i where Peepy's natural beauty was so distracting that this Hawaiian monk seal expert was rendered speechless durning his video shoot . . .

Kaua'i Kids, Sue the Chicken, and Monk Seal Sighting

Where were we? OH, THAT'S RIGHT . . . the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i!!!!!

After a exhilarating DAY ONE, there was more fun to be had. Before beginning school visits, we checked out the historic town of Koloa . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Later, we talked about writing the American Girl Kanani books with Mr. Pau's fourth grade class at Koloa Elementary, and then with Nathaniel Evslin's class at Island School . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

At theKaua'i Visitors Bureau we judged an essay contest about Kaua'i and the endangered Hawaiian monk seals. Here's the super secret code I used when figuring out my top picks . . .

Photobucket
(I'll reveal the winner in another blog, to give you time to try to Dan Brown it and crack the code.)

The scenery continued to bedazzle us. However, even more bedazzling was Peepy who was given a lei and her own puka shell necklace . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

It was a very exciting day for us because . . . WE SAW A MONK SEAL!!!

Photobucket
(Insert your own lovely MONK SEAL PHOTO HERE -- um . . . I forgot to take a picture. That's how exciting it was. Trust me.)

While in Kaua'i, we also spoke at Kilauea School . . .
Photobucket Photobucket

On our way back, we stopped for a world famous Duane's Ono Burger . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

It was wonderful and so was the location. Plus, we were visited by roosters and chickens!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

In the Kanani books, she has a pet rooster named Jinx. There's also a chicken in the book named Sue. I named her after Sue Kanoho, Executive Director of the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau. Good thing Sue has a sense of humor! Look what she gave me . . . my very own SUE THE CHICKEN . . .

Photobucket

Mahalo, Sue!

Stay tuned for more Kaua'i Adventures, plus my blog debut of the WARP SPEED book trailer!

Yes, I Had To Go To Kaua'i . . .

There are many sacrifices a dedicated author must make for her craft. Like traveling. Yes, I had to go to Kaua'i where the weather was hovering around 80 degrees. Here's the view from my room at the Kaua'i Beach Resort, and other stuff . . .

[image error] [image error] [image error]

What were we doing on Kaua'i? Lots. As you may know, I wrote ALOHA, KANANI and GOOD JOB, KANANI for American Girl's 2011 Girl of the Year.

The last time I was on the island, I was doing super secret research. But this time, I came to tell everyone I wrote the books!

It was a blast at KONG, the FM radio station. Not only did I do an interview, but so did my American Girl editor, Jennifer Hirsch, and my Hawaiian monk seal research consultant, Tim Robinson. Oh, and of course, Peepy upstaged us all when she revealed that she'd been invited to William and Kate's royal wedding--but was boycotting since she wasn't asked to be in the wedding party. (It's a shame because Peeps already has a couture dress.)

[image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error]

After, on our way to a school visit, we stopped to admire the view . . .

[image error] [image error]

Get a load of the backdrop of Hanalei School! Ronalee and Tim from the Kaua'i Monk Seal Watch Program talked to the students about how they can help save the endangered monk seals, and I talked about:
1) Writing the Kanani books.
2) The ulcer in my eyeball.
3) Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

[image error] [image error]
(The answer is #1, however I do have an ulcer in my eyeball, but it's healing well, thankyouverymuch.)

It was so fun at Hanalei, that I decided it was entirely necessary to keep up the festivities--and of course that meant . . . SHAVE ICE!!!! (Not to brag, but I'm sort of an expert on shave ice.)

[image error] [image error] [image error]
(That's Tim with the shave ice. I'm the one wearing the glasses, on account of the eyeball thing.)

Okay, then after the shave ice, it was time to get back to grueling work of, um . . . looking at the sites and such . . .

[image error] [image error] [image error] [image error]

That evening we headed to the Grand Hyatt Resort . . .

[image error] [image error] [image error] [image error]

Before our speaking engagement, we met with the Girl Scouts. They were presented with Kanani dolls and books to donate to the Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center.

[image error] [image error]

However, the Girl Scouts weren't the only ones being presented with something. Sue Kanoho, the Executive Director of the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau presented Peepy with an awesome basket of Hawaiian gifts for her numerous contributions to Kaua'i and the world . . .

[image error] [image error]

We had lots of people, both locals and visitors to the island, show up to hear Jennifer and Moi talk about the Kanani books, and what it's like being an author . . .

[image error] [image error] [image error]

I was totally discombobulated to learn that I wouldn't be speaking alone. Squeeee!!! Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, and Johnny Depp, joined me at the podium . . .

[image error] [image error]

Afterward, the Kanani books were available for a donation to the Kaua'i Monk Seal Watch Program and I signed 27 bazillion (or so) copies.

[image error] [image error] [image error]

Before we called it a night, people who I named characters after in the books gathered around for this uber realistic, museum-quality, oil painting . . .

I slept REALLY well that night. Why? Because all this took place in DAY ONE. (I know!)

Oh! Oh! I don't want to forget this, THE HUFFINGTON POST ran my complete essay about the woman who inspired me to be an author . . .

[image error] [image error]

CLICK HERE to read the essay.

Stay tuned for more Kaua'i Adventures.

Talking at ARTTalk and Kids at Carver

Okay, so I'm here right now . . .
Photobucket Photobucket

Yes! Kaua'i!!! And I'll be blogging about that soon. However, I'm oh-so-behind on where I've been, and trying to play catch-up. Therefore . . .

Earlier this month, Peepy and I paid a visit to Carver Elementary School in San Marino, CA . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We were greeted by a big banner, lots of awesome posters, and Domo . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket
(Above: A Domo.)

Talk about enthusiasm!

Photobucket Photobucket

When I asked "Batman? Star Trek? Or Star Wars?" (In WARP SPEED, Marley Sandelski and his friends argue about which is best.)

Photobucket Photobucket

The answer was overwhelmingly . . . STAR WARS. (Yet when I visited Burton Middle School, they were solidly Batman.)

Our visit was hosted by San Marino Toy and Book Shoppe. Here's our friend Candace selling WARP SPEED, and other books o' mine. The line was so long that it went around the moon! Maybe.

Photobucket Photobucket

A couple of days later, I took part in Boston Court's ARTTalk . . .

Photobucket

It was a day-long spoken word marathon. While I read from some of my books, Peepy explored backstage, and then snuck into the Green Room and feasted on the snacks . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

BTW, Boston Court is not in Boston, it's in Pasadena!

So, stay tuned for wonderful weather . . . next blog -- HAWAII!!!

Researching WARP SPEED's Historic Rialto Theater

Last blog we met the guys who helped me with the Star Trek/Batman/Star Wars references in WARP SPEED. This blog, we're going to meet someone else I called on for help.

In WARP SPEED, not all the characters are human . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket

And I'm not just talking about the Star Trek, Star Wars and Batman stuff that Marley and his friends argue about.

This time I'm taking about a building. But not just any building-- specifically, the old Rialto Theater where Marley lives. It was based on the real Rialto Theatre (it's spelled different in real life).

Here's a draft of when I was writing a passage about the Rialto using my Scrivener program . . .

Photobucket

And here's the real Rialto. It's closed down and crumbling now, but there's a fight on to save it . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket

On the right side of Scrivener is some of my research about old theaters and projection booths. On the left is a part of an essay Marley wrote for his English class . . .

Photobucket

My friend, Curtis Sponsler, owner of Animill was a movie projectionist in a former life. . .

Photobucket

So, I bugged Curtis with questions about the projectionist booth where Marley's dad spends most of his time. After WARP SPEED came out, I asked him more stuff. This time about him.

1) What was the best thing about being a projectionist?
The exposure to countless movies, the ability to do homework, to make artistic envelopes for my girlfriend's countless love notes... Ok, the very best was blowing holes in nickels using the carbon-arc lamps.

2) Have you always been a movie buff?
Once a nerd, always a nerd. Movies have been to me what books have been to you. I've always known I wanted to make movies.

3) What did it feel like, being alone up in the projection booth?
Goes kind'a with question #1: alone to design, write, think, and imagine. The sound of the projectors was lulling and familiar - I love mechanical "low-tech" as much as my bleeding edge microprocessor powered gizmos.

4) Was there a character you could relate to in Warp Speed?

For a while Warp Speed felt like a biography of my early years - wayyyy to familiar and sentimental. So I would say that I was Marley: preoccupied with Trek (BTW, real Trekkies call themselves Trekkers... which ultimately makes them uberTrekkies and have a serious problem), Star Wars, and movies. So perhaps I am the amalgam of Marley and his dad.

As a follow-up, I knew a few "Diggers" and ended up making friends of them... of all your characters, I liked him most.

---
Thank you, Curtis!

Let's hope the Rialto can be saved. Here's a painting of it that hangs in my living room, plus some more photos . . .

In Praise of WARP SPEED's StarTrekBatmanStarWars Geeks!!!

The party was a blast, and we even got to meet one of my research guys. But here's more about how I came to be an expert . . . (I enlisted help).

My new novel WARP SPEED features Marley Sandelsky, a Star Trek-obsessed middle school boy who gets beat up everyday at school.

Photobucket Photobucket

His best friend Ramen (a.k.a. Luke Serrano) thinks that Star Wars rules . . .

Photobucket

And a new kid, Max, believes that there's no one better than Batman . . .

Photobucket

Though I love all three of these, er, enterprises, I am by no means an expert. Therefore, to write the book, I turned to two guys to help me out.

The first was Ed Masessa. Can you tell which team he's on?

Photobucket

That's right. Ed's a hardcore Trekkie/Trekker. We asked him some questions recently. Here's what he had to say . . .

1) Marley Sandelsky is a die-hard Star Trek fan. When did you become one, and why?

I became a fan when the very first original episode aired on my crummy little 'color' television with the fuzzy reception and rabbit ears. I grew up watching the sci-fi movies of the 50's and when Star Trek came along, it opened up a whole new world. I was 11 going on 12 years old.

2) Marley calls the bullies who beat him up, The Gorn, after some reptilian creatures in the original Star Trek TV series. Which Star Trek villain do you find the most despicable?

The Gorn are one of my favorites as well, by my all-time favorite was Khan Noonien Singh played by Ricardo Montalban. He was in one of the original episodes in the late 60's (Space Seed) and came back to reprise the role in the Wrath of Khan movie. From 'newer' Star Trek lore, I'd have to go with The Borg.

3) Which Star Trek character is your favorite, and if you were to buy them a present for their birthday, what would it be?

How can anyone choose a favorite character other than Spock? I'd buy him a 3-dimensional chess set with playing pieces that look like Star WARS characters just so I could hear him say "fascinating."

4) Do you often dress like that?

I hardly ever have the opportunity to dress in Federation apparel, but as a young boy, I did have a sweater that was very Trekkie – and it was blue. To this day, I have a hard time wearing a red shirt.
---------------

My other go-to guy was Matt Cunningham. A Star Wars fan, he's also worked on History Channel documentaries about Batman . . .

Photobucket

Here's what Matt had to say when we interviewed him . . .

1) Marley's best friend Ramen loves Star Wars, and his other friend Max is a total Batman fan. Of the two, which one are you and why?

Answering this question is like having your parents hanging above a shark tank and deciding which one has to be dropped in. Star Wars changed my life when I was a boy. It made me want to write stories. Batman influences me everyday. WWBD (what would Batman do) is actually a philosophy that I like to subscribe to, except I don't have all the cool gadgets, unless you count my R2D2 Android phone. Doing good, helping others and solving riddles. That's how I roll.

2) You've done a lot of Batman research. Can you tell us about that?

Most people would say I'm a Batman aficionado. I was brought in to handle the research for some of the Batman documentaries on the History Channel because of my Batman knowledge (pretty much a dream gig). I'm a super nerd when it comes to the caped crusader and a dream of mine is to one day write a mini series for the Dark Knight or even chapter books for the younger crowd. How cool would that be?!

3) Which Star Wars character would you like to spend the day with, and where would you go?

I was hoping to avoid this question due to the complexity of it. My brain hurts from a universe of possibilities. I'm going to rock this answer like this:

A) Han Solo and Lando, Friday night at the Cantina bar. That would be an amazing night.

B) Yoda, Umami burger, talking about books.

C) Hoth Leia skiing in the Swiss Alps, New Hope Leia dinner at Giordano's Pizza in Chicago, Slave Leia... too PG-13 to talk about here.

D) Darth Vader, return to middle school and have a few conversations with some bullies.

4) Did you know any kids like Marley in WARP SPEED?

Yes, me. I was Marley in school. A Star Wars geek to the core and a target for bullies in grade school and part of junior high. I was a quiet kid because we moved around when I was young so I had to reboot a lot on making friends. Reading books and watching movies were a great escape for me. I have a very overactive imagination but no imaginary friends (they only live in my books now).

Here's what some of my Star Trek research looked like on Scrivener, the writing program I use . . .

Photobucket

And here's some Batman photos Matt sent me, plus Star Wars stuff . . .

Photobucket

There was some discrepancy when it came to Star Wars/Star Trek insults. So I turned to my facebook friends for their opinions, and dozens weighed in, here are just a few . . .

Photobucket

Since we've been talking about guys, let's talk about women now. It's Women's History Month, and to celebrate, I (along with seven other authors) wrote an essay about a woman writer who influenced my life. You can CLICK HERE to read what we wrote.

Look Who's On the Cover of WARP SPEED . . .

Okay, so the rumors are true. Yes, I have a very PAINFUL ulcer in my EYEBALL. However, I won't let a little thing like that stop me from blogging about the fun, fun, fun we had on Sunday at the WARP SPEED and BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) party.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

In fact, we had so much fun, it wouldn't all fit on one blog, so we're continuing it here.

As we've done with past parties, like this one and that one, some of our more shy guests recreated the cover of a book. What book? Why WARP SPEED, of course.

Here's the actual cover . . .

Photobucket

And here are the fabulous recreations . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Don't you think they could all be professional models?!!!

BTW, here's a fun interview I did last month over at Britney Breakey's blog!

Warp Speed Launch Party Is a Blast!!!

So, the night before the WARP SPEED + BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) Launch Party, I made one of my lists. (I'm a compulsive list-maker. Otherwise, POOF! It's outta my head forever.)

The next day, I set my grapefruit half down on -- you guessed it! My list.

Photobucket

I'm sure I forgot to bring something important, like bags of money for all the guests. Oh well, luckily I had my super secret launch party team watching my back. Yes, that's right. My mom and dad. They provided all the food!!!

Photobucket Photobucket

Vroman's in Pasadena provided the books . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(See the small trees? Those are bonsai and my dad created those.)

Soon, the guest started arriving. I always freak out before book parties because I'm afraid no one will show up.

I was wrong. Hooray!!!
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

First I talked about WARP SPEED and how the book came to be. I also read from the novel . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Of course, since Marley, the protagonist, is a Star Trek fan, everyone did the Vulcan sign -- you could tell that some people did this all the time, and others, er, not so much . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Because Marley loves Star Trek, and his best friend, Ramen, loves Star Wars, and their mutual friend Max loves Batman . . . I asked . . .

Photobucket

I'd say it was a tie between Batman and Star Wars, with Star Trek coming in a semi-distant third. (This surprised me.)

Speaking of surprises, as I showed slides of the guys who helped me with some of the book's research ("Hi, Ed!" "Hi, Curtis!"), I mentioned that my Star Wars/Batman expert was in the room, and asked if anyone could figure out who it was . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Not to brag, but I have the smartest book launch guests. They figured out that Matt "DM" Cunningham was standing in the back! (Yes, that's him in the Bat-shirt.) I'll be blogging about the other dudes soon, too.

Next up was a reading from BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES). I read the part of Bobby Ellis-Chan, a boy who questions his bravery, and amazing illustrator of the Bobby series (and pal), Dan Santat, played the cat with 27-toes who scares Bobby . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We had so much fun, it was hard not to crack up!!!

Photobucket

Dan's also the person who shot the launch party video. You can hear him during the blooper reel making me laugh . . .

While Dan was setting up to talk about how he lost 25 pounds with the help of his iTouch app, plus how he illustrated BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES), I had a contest to give away one of my dad's bonsai trees. Can you say . . .

Photobucket
(That's Hawaiian for their state fish, the trigger fish, and is in ALOHA, KANANI.)

These brave people gave it a try . . .
Photobucket Photobucket

It was soooo close that the winner was decided by who had the closest birthday coming up! (Jason Sperber, who blogs at "a href="http://lisayee.livejournal.com/159909...http://ricedaddies.blogspot.com/2011/02/interview-with-author-lisa-yee.html">RiceDaddies</a>, also won a bonsai since he spent his birthday at the launch party.)

After Dan spoke it was time to sign books . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

There was more fun to come, but we'll show that on the next blog. In the meantime, here's a hint of what you'll see . . .

Messy Desk and Porterville Peep Posters

Recently, Peepy and I headed to Porterville, CA to speak at Burton Middle School . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Peeps was beyond please when we arrived because bunny-themed presents awaited her . . .

Photobucket

There was even a poster contest touting our visit. Here are some of the winners . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Wait! Who's that? Why, it's Super Librarian Sherrie Hughes holding the the first place poster . . .

Photobucket

Speaking of Sherrie, look the fabulous displays she created in her library. It was so cool because everything there somehow related to my life!!!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Soon it was time to speak to these good-looking 7th graders who transported themselves into the gym. Then, without prompting, held up the Vulcan sign in honor of WARP SPEED . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

During the break, we hung out with the faculty and feasted on the most amazing cinnamon rolls. Here's the staff who, without prompting, held up the Vulcan sign in honor of WARP SPEED . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
