Blog Soup

I've been so busy with the holidays and creating my new website, that I thought for this blog I'd just throw some stuff together, sort of like the way I make soup -- only without the chicken broth.

(Above: Soon this will be replaced by a sparkly new website. That is, unless I destroy the internet first.)
Everyone should have a weasel, don't you think?

My holidays were brighter because I got a gift certificate to my favorite chocolate shop, plus this awesome statement. Yes, you can bet I will be eating California Brittle (my chocolate of choice) while wearing the bumper sticker.

Recent books I read include THE NIGHT CIRCUS and THE IMPERFECTIONISTS, both of which/whom I loved. Oh, and I am now a computer expert, and a tad discombobulated . . .

Did you hear that Prince Harry and Catherine (is she a princess?) came to help with the garden? They were pretty good with the flowers, but I'll tell you, they could not so great when it came time to plant cacti.

This is not See's candy. It is . . . a cat toy!!! (I don't have a cat, but I play with the faux chocolates. They are made of cloth and have 63% fewer calories than regular chocolate.)

And finally, there's this. Yes, another one of my secret talents, revealed . . .

Revisiting a Twisted Christmas
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
I've been busy teaching myself Weebly, so I can create a new website. Therefore, I'm bringing back a blog I wrote a few Christmases (did I spell that right?) ago. Ready? Here it is . . .
You bake a pork roast with a special secret glaze and stir fry broccoli with garlic and a dash of soy. You teach Son how to roll dough into croissants and supervise the decorating of the gingerbread house.
You bake cookies for Santa, slice oranges for the reindeer, and even get yummy Yuletide treats for Puppy. You make sure the stockings are hung by the chimney with care in hopes that Saint Nicolas would soon be there. But all Hubby, Son and Teen talk about is how this was "the Christmas Eve that Mom tortured us."
Remember that wonderful family movie, Oliver! The one with the cute little orphan boys singing "Food glorious food . . ." and the dancing through the bustling streets of London. Remember Fagin, a little scary, but kind. Remember how the film left you humming with a full heart and renewed faith in mankind?
Well, I loved that film and wanted to share it with the family. We have this Christmas Eve tradition of watching a movie together while eating popcorn and anticipating the goodies Santa will bring. Two years ago the movie was Elf. Last year it was A Charlie Brown Christmas. This year it was Oliver.
So we popped the DVD in, fast forwarded to the film, and sat back to enjoy. We kept waiting and waiting for it to pick up and for the orphans to start dancing and singing. Only, they never did. Instead we saw Oliver get shot. We watched Nancy get bludgeoned to death. We saw Bill kill himself. We saw Fagin hang.
Why? Because I had accidentally got the Roman Polanski version of the film.
By the time the movie was over the entire family, including Puppy, was traumatized and depressed.
Oh well. At least the next day was fun and festive.
BTW, whenever Puppy chewed things up, I thought she was being naughty. (Below: Her latest.)
But really, she was being nice. Look what she gave the family for Christmas . . .
(Above: A shadow box filled with the greatest hits of her work this year.)
OKAY, IT'S ME AGAIN, THIS TIME IN 2011. Just wanted to say the Puppy has grown up since that Christmas blog. Well, sort of.

The End of a Cruise and a Big Cake
Even though my entries about my American Girl Caribbean cruise have extended over several blogs, the actual time on the ship flew past!
We celebrated Thanksgiving with a scrumptious meal . . .
Before we knew it, it was time for the big 25th Birthday Party . . .
There was soooo much food and fun . . .
Then everyone gathered for the big announcement from American Girl executive Shawn Dennis . . .
Now, I don't want you to get the wrong idea. I was working very hard my entire time on the cruise. If you don't believe me, here are some of the places I could be found writing . . .
Happy 25th Birthday, American Girl!!!

Yep, via our magical Time Machine, we are still in the Caribbean, but this time in St. Kitts!!!

We loved exploring the fort at the top of the island . . .

The forests were awesome . . .

There were monkeys, birds and this exotic creature swinging on a vine . . .

Later, there was the biggest slumber party, ever!!!

All the girls came dressed in their pajamas. Here are some wearing Kanani PJs . . .

Peepy loved the blanket toss . . .

I ioved reading ALOHA, KANANI to the girls . . .

And look! Mary Casanova read, too . . .

Ah, what a wonderful evening.

A Fashionable Cruise + Sunny St. Maarten
As you may know, Peepy is quite the fashion maven . . .
So it was only fitting that she attended the Fashion Show during our American Girl 25th Birthday Cruise to the Caribbean. The girls/models took an afternoon out of their vacations to rehearse. Here are Shawn and Fran from American Girl prior to the show, and here's my seatmate . . .
Meanwhile, backstage the girls were giddy with anticipation . . .
What's an American Girl Fashion Show? It's where girls model the outfits from their favorite American Girl characters. These shows go on all over the United States as charity fundraisers and to date have raised over $26 million. Did I mention $26 MILLION?!!!
Look! It's 2011 Girl of the Year, Kanani Akina, and Ivy Ling from GOOD LUCK, IVY, characters from my books . . .
Speaking of Ivy, look!!! Yes, there's now a Ivy Mini Doll, plus a MINIATURE BOOK!!!!
Oops, I digressed. back to the Caribbean! I'm not sure what the weather is where you are right now, but it was sunny in St. Maarten . . .
Next Blog: Exploring St. Kitt's, plus a bedtime story . . .

Food, Glorious Food + San Juan, Puerto Rico
Continuing on our American Girl 25th Birthday Cruise to the Caribbean, it is fair to say that I ate. A lot. Often. Can you blame me?
Dinners were held in American Girl's own fancy dining room where everyone was treated like royalty, even the dolls . . .
Of course, all the eating meant that exercise was also on the menu . . .
(True confession: I had ever good intention of exercising every day, but I was too busy eating and relaxing to follow through. However, Peepy managed to work out on the ship and keep her girlish figure.)
Since the girls were given our American Girl books, we had a couple of autograph sessions. Here's Mary and Valerie . . .
I signed KANANI books, and so many of the girls were already knew about Kanani's efforts to help save the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.
When writing Kanani's stories, I went to Kauai and met with experts, and learned that there are only about 1,100 Hawaiian monk seals left . . .
There's good news though -- over in Kona, Hawaii, the world's first rehabilitation hospital for sick or injured Monk seals is being built by the Marine Mammal Center!
Just as we finished our autograph session, our ship, the Celebrity Eclipse, approached San Juan, Puerto Rico . . .
That evening, the hardworking Team American Girl got take time out for dinner on shore . . .
Peep and I had a fabulous dinner with author Valerie and Mary Casanova, and American Girl V.P. and host of the cruise, Shawn Dennis. Can you stop the difference between these two groups of people?
That's right! Valerie (left) and Mary (right) are in both photos, and I'm in one, and Shawn's in the other. It's true what they say about you -- you are so smart.
Now, I don't want you to think that I wasn't writing when I was on the cruise. Quite the contrary, I was working very hard.

Squeee . . . Setting Sail to the Caribbean!!!
Where to begin? Where to begin? Well, maybe I'll just begin with this . . .
It's hard to believe that Peepy and I are back from our American Girl 25th Birthday Cruise to the Caribbean!
A few months ago I got a phone call inviting me to participate in the birthday celebration. Oh, and it's on a cruise ship, I was told. It took me all of .001 seconds to say, "YES!"
First we flew to Miami and then boarded the Celebrity Eclipse . . .
The ship was huge and utterly gorgeous . . .
I especially loved the American Girl Lounge where girls could drop by anytime to do crafts . . .
And look! There was a library on board . . .
I was allowed to bring a guest, so since there were so many mothers and daughters onboard, it was only fitting that I bring Teen. Here she is with me and American Girl authors Mary Casanova and Valerie Tripp . . .
In honor of Kanani, the 2011 Girl of the Year, there was a spectacular luau . . .
(I'm not sure why the photos of the fruit are so big.)
As part of the celebration, I talked about Kanani and her story, and the hardships I had to undergo for my craft. Here's a time lapse of my event . . .
The audience was so enthusiastic, I felt like a rock star!!!
Every girl got a copy of ALOHA, KANANI (and their dolls got grass skirts and other goodies). It was fun signing the books and meeting my fellow travelers . . .
Every night before bed the girls got a special gift. Here's Peepy with one of the presents . . .
Next Blog: Another hard day at the office . . .
BTW, here's what happened in my home town this week. Yes, I returned just in time for the hurricane-like winds and destruction.

See's Chocolates and Caribbean Kick-Off
I can't explain it, but my blog can be one place when I am in another.
For example, I went to the Caribbean on a spectacular cruise . . .
And yet and blogging about a amazing school visit I had prior to setting sail. Yes, that's right, I was at St. John Eudes school in Chatsworth, CA!!!
(Look, even the trim on the banner is Peepy themed!)
We set up our equipment (projector, iPod, universal remote, rocket launchers - well, most of those things) and then spoke to an awesome group of students . . .
Oh wait, I wanted to show you the kindergarteners waiting patiently for me to begin . . .
And here's everyone during my presentations!
While I spoke, Peepy went exploring and was thrilled to discover a room especially decorated for her . . .
We had an awesome lunch . . .
Then it was off to the library to sign books . . .
Needless to say, Peepy had a large number of fans . . .
During my talk I mentioned that See's Chocolates are my favorite and they fuel my writing -- and before I left, I was presented with a one pound box!!!!!
Two days later, it was off to Miami to board the American Girl 25th Anniversary cruise. When we got to the hotel, we were thrilled to see that there were lots of authors in town . . .
Look who we got to have breakfast with before boarding our ship!
(Above: Jonathan Auxier, Mr. Orgami Yoda a.k.a. Tom Angleberger, Dan Santat, Grace Lin, and Moi)
Jonathan, who is an author/illustrator, drew this picture of Peepy. However, it looks like Tom was disturbed by it . . .
But wait! There's some great news from Grace. Check out The Blue Rose Girls blog to find out her cake-tacular announcement!

Super Scholastic Book Fairs, Plus an American Girl Secret
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I've just come back from a fabulous weeklong American Girl 25th Anniversary Cruise to the Caribbean, and will be blogging that soon. (First I have to sort through my 345,892 photos.)
In the meantime, here's what happened the week-ish before I set sail. Oh! And at the end of this blog I will reveal an American Girl secret!!!
My love affair with Scholastic Book Fairs goes back a long way. It began with MILLICENT MIN, GIRL GENIUS . . .
I was driving through Texas, moving from Florida to California, when I got a phone call saying that Book Fairs wanted to feature the novel.
That was a shock to me because it was my the book and hadn't even been released yet. However, Book Fairs really believed in it and printed up 100,000 copies!!!
Now eight years and nine more published books later, Scholastic Book Fairs and I are still pals! Here are the kind of crazy smart of people who work there . . .
Recently, I visited a school that was getting ready for their Book Fair, and then the week after that I was at Pomelo Elementary in West Hill, CA
. . .
Hey look -- they were having a Scholastic Book Fair, too . . .
I got to speak to the students . . .
And then sign books . . .
What was Peepy doing during all that? Why, making history, of course . . .
Okay! Ready for the American Girl secret? Well, every year the Girl of the Year's name tightly guarded until the shortly after midnight of the new year. For example, for 2011 it's Kanani, and I wrote her stories. However, because of the 25th year birthday, the girls on the cruise got to find out early that Mary Casanova (who was on the cruise, along with me and author Valerie Tripp) -- plus, they learned that they will be receiving a book and doll.
Psst . . . I turned on my video camera when the announcement was made. You gotta see/hear the girls when they found out that the next GOTY is named . . .

Rad Dads and Me
I have a series about a fourth grade boy named Bobby Ellis-Chan. His father is an ex-NFL football player turned SAHD (stay at home dad).
So imagine my delight when I received a letter from Jason Sperber, a SAHD/blogger who ldentified with the dad in the books!
We've become friends and not long ago I was invited to be a special guest at Skylight books in Los Angeles for an awesome event celebrating the release of RAD DAD: DISPATCHES FROM THE FRONTIERS OF FATHERHOOD . . .
(That's Jason with anthology author/editor Tomas Moniz and Mista Cookie Jar.)
Tomas was up first and told us about the anthology, then read. As you can see, there was a totally kid-friendly vibe in bookstore . . .
Next was Jason and he read a very heartfelt essay . . .
(Here's Jason's blog about the event.)
When it was my turn, I read from BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) . . .
The icing on the cake as when Mista Cookie Jar sang and the kids began to dance with Peepy
Peepy was thrilled when she serenaded . . .
What a blast!
I was honored to be a Rad Dad for the night!!!
