Woo Hoo, WARP SPEED! Plus, a Bad Puppy, a Parade, and a Bug with a Human Head!!!

Squeeee!!! WARP SPEED has been named a TOP SHELF book by VOYA (Voices of Youth Advocates)!

Photobucket

WARP SPEED's also been named to the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) Best Fiction for Young Adults list!!!

Photobucket

Want to know more about the book? Why, I just happen to have this video clip of me speaking Klingon and describing it . . .

Here's another video about the book, and why I wrote it . . .

And here's more! Two anthologies that I've contributed to, DEAR BULLY and GEEKTASTIC have made the YALSA 2012 Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults list!

So, of course, the best way to celebrate this cool news was to go to Los Angeles's Chinese New Year Parade in Chinatown . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Oops. I didn't have room to add this on my last blog, but after our signing at Apostrophe Books last week, we explored the Belmont Shores shopping district where indie bookstore is located. We stumbled across a Willy Wonka-worthy candy store called Powell's Sweet Shoppe. And sure enough! Willy Wonka, the movie, was playing . . .

Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Nearby was Luna where they had lots of handmade jewelry and crafts and stuff. I was quite taken with the bugs . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

That's because recently there was a giant bug with a human head in our house, and I had to relocate it across the street. So, I decided to get a bug in honor of the other bug. I named him "Lowell," after the elementary school . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

The last place we stopped at before heading home was a wonderful bakery . . .

Photobucket

I spent a long time trying to decide what to get, and finally settled on a gingerbread man. However, when I got home, I left it on my desk and when I returned, it was GONE!!!! I'm not naming names, but I have a suspect in mind . . .

Photobucket

I suppose I should feel good about the cookie gone missing. It could have been worse. Here are some things Puppy had done in the past . . .

The Essential Apostrophe and Gung Hei Fat Choy!!!

Some apostrophes are unnecessary, like these from the blog Apostrophe Abuse . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

However, other Apostrophes are absolutely, positively, totally, totally necessary . . . .

Photobucket

That's right. I'm talking about that wonderful indie store Apostrophe Books in Long Beach, CA. I was there last year when WARP SPEED launched, and was back recently . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

All the author/illustrators who spoke at Lowell Elementary signed at the store the next day . . .

Photobucket

And what a marvelous bookstore it is!!! There's something about a bookstore. You walk in and instantly feel good. Bookstore therapy. Yes, that's what is is.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Oh sure, the internet is all fine and dandy. In fact, for some of us, we use it Waaaaaay Tooooo Much and need help discipling ourselves. And yes, there are e-books.

However, there's nothing like buying a book, a real book, one to have and to hold, in sickness and in heath, from this day forward until death do you part (or something like that.)

Here are a few books of mine that I am wedded to . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I wrote a book called GOOD LUCK, IVY, about a Chinese American Girl growing up in San Francisco. In the story, she's a really good gymnast because I was a . . . really bad gymnast. Anyway, here's Ivy and me . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Recently I heard from the fabulous Berkeley Book Worms from Berkeley Elementary in Westwood, NJ. They just started their book club and chose GOOD LUCK, IVY as their first pick to help celebrate Chinese New Year!!!

Photobucket

Gung hei fat choy -- Happy Chinese New Year to the Berkeley Book Worms, and everyone who is Chinese, and to everyone who isn't Chinese, and anyone I may have left out!!!

Getting Rowdy in the Lowell Library + The Secrets of the Teacher's Lounge

My first school visit of the new year was at Lowell Elementary in Long Beach, CA . . .

Photobucket

I taught a workshop there last year, and must not have been too weird because they invited me back!

Photobucket

Before the evening event, the authors/illustrators rendezvoused in the teacher's lounge . . .

Photobucket

When I was a kid, I always wanted to know what the teacher's lounge looked like and what went on in that mysterious room . . .

Photobucket

So it was a thrill to pass through the doors and into the forbidden zone. I wasn't disappointed . . .

Photobucket

Off to the side of the main room (above) was another secret room where the cake was kept. So now you know! Behind those closed doors, teachers (and visiting authors and illustrators) lounge around and eat cake!!!

Photobucket Photobucket

Apres cake, it was time to go onstage and be introduced. Here's who else was there. It's always fun to see Fancy Nancy illustrator, Robin Priess Glasser. However, one of us felt underdressed . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Robin has to coolest crown. Last time we saw each other, she hung out with Peepy . . .

Photobucket

Then it was time to break into our workshop groups. My "How to Write a Story" was held in the library . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Pssst . . . don't tell the librarian, but I stood on the chair so that everyone could see me . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

I gave my group some tough, but fun, writing assignments. Luckily, Peepy was there if anyone needed help . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket
(Did you notice the girl with the pink hair? She matches the cover of ABSOLUTELY MAYBE!)

The kids (and adults) came up with such fabulous stories, we had to celebrate!! I told them, this is the one and only time you can stand on a chair in the library and shout . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

We capped off the evening with a book signing . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket

When we got back to our hotel, we saw one of these intriguing signs in the elevator . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Yes! You must be psychic -- it was the last sign.

So we went to the front desk and asked to see the Official Elevator Inspection Permit. But alas, the general manager was not on duty. Oh well. Next time.

Next Blog: Guess who had a book signing at Apostrophe Books????

Colin Firth, Craig Ferguson, and Me

It is possible that I am inordinately fond of Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

Photobucket Photobucket

It is possible that some incredibly kind people are aware of this and have sent him to my office.

Photobucket Photobucket

So, when Teen told me about Colin (we are on a first name basis) being on Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show, it is possible that I started screaming.

Photobucket

Being a Craig (we are on a first name basis) fan, I have been to his show in the past. You may have seen me. I was the one in the audience who was waving.

The first time, the special guest was Robin Williams, and the second time it was Neil Patrick Harris . . .

Photobucket

Because of my special fan status, and other things, I was awarded (I like to think that there was a committee of judges who decided this) priority access to the show . . .

Photobucket

They wanted me there so badly, I was sent several follow-up emails to insure my presence . . .

Photobucket

Not wanting to make a big deal about seeing COLIN FIRTH and CRAIG FERGUSON TOGETHER and IN PERSON, I mostly kept this information to myself and my Facebook and Twitter followers, plus the people in the 15 Items or Less line at the grocery store, and some strangers who thought I was harassing them.

Photobucket

Before the show, we went to The Farmers Market, which is next to CBS, for lunch, and to say "hello!" to Ivy Ling at the American Girl Place. I wrote GOOD LUCK, IVY and recently they made a mini version of the doll and book!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

The line for the show was short. Maybe because we got there an hour and a half early.

Photobucket Photobucket

It was odd, they were even advertising free tickets . . .

Photobucket

Soon enough, the line grew and grew and grew and even people who had tickets were turned away . . .
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket

However, I had nothing to fear because of my super special priority access tickets. So I used the time to plot, er, wonder, how to make a good impression on Colin . . .

Photobucket

While we were in line, gameshow contestants marched past us . . .

Photobucket

We weren't allowed to bring phones or cameras into the studio, however, few people know this about me . . . I am a semi-professional artist. Here's what happened, as best as I can recall . . .

Everyone had to go through security, yes, even me . . .

Photobucket

I was in the second row, middle. However, a BIG man with a BIG head sat in front of me . . .

Photobucket

Therefore, I was forced to invade the personal space of the stranger seated to my right, so I could get a good view of COLIN and CRAIG . . .

Photobucket

They had to stop the show, when Colin and I made significant eye contact and he just had to know who I was, and he wanted to meet me right way!!!! Or at least, that's what maybe, possibly happened, or not. It's all sort of fuzzy now . . .

Photobucket

Of course, Peepy has an entirely different account of what happened. She says that Craig dedicated the monologue to her . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And that Colin was taken aback by her beauty and only had eyes for her . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

But whatever happened, this much is true -- the accents (English = Colin, Scottish = Craig) were incredible, and Colin was so wonderful and witty!!!

If you missed the show, you can see it HERE.

Photobucket
(Thanks to Marylin Scott-Waters for capturing this completely candid and true photo of Colin and me.)

Taming My Internet Addiction

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a writer in possession of a good computer cannot get any work done due to well-honed procrastination techniques. (My apologies to Jane Austen.)

Photobucket

I have this love/hate relationship with the internet. I love it, but I hate it, but I love it. That's because it's SOOOOOOO hard to tear myself away from it and get any writing done. At least, that's how it was. Then I discovered FREEDOM. (Oh, man. This is sounding like a cheesy commercial, but I swear, it's all true!)

Photobucket

In the past eight years and three months, I've had ten novels published, plus numerous short stories, essays and articles. "How can you do all this when you, Lisa Yee, are the Queen of procrastination and/or the inter webs?" you ask, or I ask, or someone else asks.

Photobucket

Simple. I use cheap tricks, threats and what REAL SIMPLE describes as . . .
Photobucket

If you are anything like me, when it comes to the internet, you have no self-control.

Photobucket

But wait! Have no fear -- FREEDOM works for both Macs and PCs. This is from the official website . . .

Photobucket

Via the internet (yes, irony!), I tracked down the creator of FREEDOM, Fred Stutzman . . .

Photobucket

Then, I peppered him with questions. Here's what he had to say . . .

LISA: I ADORE Freedom. Being an internet junkie, it allows me to write without having to resort to a typewriter. Fred, do you have internet addiction problems or are you just empathic to those of us who have lack of control?

Photobucket

FRED: I'll put it this way - I research social network sites for a living. There's very much a blurring between what constitutes work and what constitutes hours of mindless clicking of friends' pictures. I don't know if I'm addicted but I do know that this technology helps make those lines a little clearer.

LISA: Um . . .

Photobucket

LISA: You do know that authors love you, right? When you were musing about, did you have writers in mind when creating Freedom?

FRED: I have been told this! In my perfect world, I get to spend most of my day writing, so I like to think I identify with writers. My reality - after meetings, service, etc. get subtracted - actually leaves very little time for writing, so I have to be efficient in that time. Freedom is a software for people who need to concentrate on long-form tasks, where concentration is essential. I think this appeals to writers.

Photobucket

LISA: I noticed that you are a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon, graduated from North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science, and have a BA in Economics, and have a graduate certificate in survey research (quantitative methodology) for Odum Institute for Research in Social Sciences. So then, what's your favorite breakfast cereal, and why?

FRED: All that education means I can locate my breakfast cereal in a values-sensitive interdisciplinary framework when studying it and designing technology to support it. Also: Granola.

LISA: I made this homemade granola just for you, Fred! (Okay, so maybe I didn't make it, but I would have if I had superior granola skills.)

Photobucket

LISA: Can you tell us how many people are using Freedom? (Not at this very moment, but overall. Ironically, those using Freedom right now would not be able to read this.)

FRED: Over 300,000 have downloaded the trial!

Photobucket

LISA: Did you have any idea it would take off like it did?

FRED: No, it was a surprise. But I knew when I used it for the first time I was on to something. It was if I had transformed my $2,500 computer into a typewriter, but that was exactly what I needed.

LISA: Me, too!

Photobucket

LISA: You have another program called ANTI-SOCIAL, that locks out users from their social media sites. Is this A) as popular as Freedom, B) less popular than Freedom, C) equally as popular as Freedom, or D) Other?

FRED: By volume it is less popular (I don't have a Windows version yet), but I think the idea really appeals to people. I actually use Anti-Social and Freedom equally…Anti-Social is nice when I am doing research.

Photobucket

LISA to Readers: Do you find this adorable?

WELL, STOP IT and GET BACK TO WORK!!! (After you finish this blog, of course.)

LISA to Fred: And finally, is there an internet tool that hasn't been invented yet, that would help you with your life? If so, what would that be?

FRED: Espresso by email? Sorry, I haven't had lunch yet, creativity is sapped.

LISA:

Terrific Teachers and Fabulous "FakeBook" Pages

I love hearing from teachers. My parents were teachers. My mother taught elementary school and my father taught high school. Both are now retired from Los Angeles Unified School District . . .

Photobucket

I always have a teacher or librarian in my books because I believe that when you are in school, one great adult can have a lasting impact on your life. My seventh grade teacher Mr. Glick is featured in STANFORD WONG FLUNKS BIG-TIME. He scared the heebie jeebies out of his students, and they loved him for that . . .

Photobucket

I used to be terrified of him, and still am a little, however we are now friends. Last year Mr. Glick even visited my house and scared the heebie jeebies out of me and Son . . .

Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Then there's Mrs. Carlson, who taught Son when he was in elementary school. She was kind enough to let me borrow her name for the Bobby Ellis-Chan books about a fourth grader. Here's "Mrs. Carlson" as she appears in the novels and what she looks like in real life . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

I am always so impressed by the creative ways teachers have come up to teach my books. Here's Mr. Lee and some of the projects his student shared with me and Puppy . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

One teacher even brought Rover, Bobby's goldfish, into the classroom . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

So when I heard from Lisa Cromley who teaches 6th grade at Westtown School in West Chester, PA I was totally intrigued. Here's what she wrote:

"My students are big fans of Millicient Min and Stanford Wong. To capture plot, character, setting and other details from their summer reading books, students created FakeBook pages that focused on the timeline and information."

Here are some of their FakeBook pages . . .

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

I don't have room to show all the terrific FakeBook pages, however I can show you Ms. Cromley's amazing students . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Speaking school, I now have a resource page on my NEW AND IMPROVED website for teachers and librarians!"

Anatomy of My Website

We can all exhale. I did not destroy the internet!

Here's my old website that I created BY MYSELF on iWeb, which is going away. That is, both my old website and iWeb are going away.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

There were actual 147-ish other pages, but I decided not to show them all because . . . well, because. Plus they scrolled down, but I decided not to show that because I couldn't figure out how to take a photo of that.

So then, when I found out that iWeb was disappearing/no longer being supported by Apple, I realized I'd have to 1) pay someone to do my website, or 2) teach myself how to create a new one ALL BY MYSELF using a different program.

This alarmed several people, plus anyone using the internet, since I've had problems in the past . . .
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Since then, I've learned to slow down and (sort of) read directions. "How hard could it be?" I asked me. I decided to approach it scientifically and strategically plotted out even the most minor details . . .

Photobucket

Needless to say, it was harder than I thought it would be . . .

Photobucket

That's probably because I am self-taught. (Translation: I couldn't get anyone to do my website for me for free.) During the process, I decided to redesign the whole thing, rewrite it, and add new and exciting photos, plus make some sections scratch 'n' sniff.

Photobucket
(Scratch above to smell computer scent.)

It was actually not too hard, this web design business, and I liked that it was drag and drop. Here's what the Weebly icons look like . ..

Photobucket

All in all, it took me about ten months to create the site. (Nine months, three weeks and two days to whine about how long it would take, plus about five days to actually do it.)

Here's Neil Patrick Harris to help unveil the final result!!!!

Photobucket

(Well, here are screen grabs of the banners.)

And if you're feeling really high-tech-y CLICK HERE GO THE NEW SITE I CREATED ALL BY MYSELF WITHOUT BRINGING DOWN THE ENTIRE INTERWEBS!!!!!

But, oh. I posted the site on Facebook, emailed my publisher, and Tweeted, and then it went down. I was soooooo embarrassed. So I posted that it no longer worked, emailed my publisher again, apologizing, and Tweeted the demise of the site.

Only to find out there's this thing called a cache -- not to be confused a sachet . . .
Photobucket

Oh! Oh! Speaking of sachet, I got LIBRARY SCENTED PERFUME!!!!! It REALLY smells like the library, all warm, musty, bookish . . .

Photobucket '

Oops. I digressed. Where were we? That right, caches. Cache. Um, apparently the new site was always there, I just hadn't cleared out my cache in a billion years.

Photobucket

That was sort of embarrassing. Hope your 2012 is going great so far! Mine is. I got ticket to this . . .

The Cybils, The Dreamers & Me

Wooo hooo!!! It was a wonderful start of the New Year when I heard about WARP SPEED (via a Tweet from Cheryl Klein) being a finalist for the Cybils!!! I'm in there with lots of good company -- CLICK HERE to see the short list.

Photobucket

On the last day of the year, I was mentioned, along with Kim Jong Il and
Dan Santat
in the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy . . .

Photobucket

Luckily, Dan and I, along with other Asian Americans, were mentioned in the Children's Literature section, and not in the recently-decesed-dictator-with-odd-hair category . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
(Um, that's Dan on the left and me in the middle.)

Hey there! In other good news, look who's our new National Ambassador for Young People's Literature . . .

Photobucket

(The Ambassador is Walter Dean Myers, not Peepy. But don't tell her that. She's already getting measured for a sash and crown.)

The other day I went to Nucleus . . .

Photobucket

Oops, not that Nucleus. This Nucleus . . .

Photobucket

It was the last hour of the Jim Henson Tribute Exhibit at Nucleus Gallery . . .

Photobucket

Here's some of what we saw . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Photobucket Photobucket

When I used to live in Florida, Jim Henson was a neighbor and a close personal friend. Well, he lived within walking distance and even if he had no idea who I was, I certainly knew who he was. I'd make it a point to walk past his house and linger (as opposed to stalk), in hopes that he'd come out and want to talk to me. Alas, it never happened, but still, I like to imagine that it did.

Rose Parade Peep . . . 2012 Edition

Once a year, Peepy and I stay up late and to cheer on the
Photobucket Photobucket

In the past, we've walked the route where the floats line up on New Year's Eve. However this year, the Rose Parade is on Monday, January 2nd. Why? Because it's never on a Sunday.

Here's the Tournament of Roses headquarters . . .

Photobucket

Other people had the same plan as we did and wanted to see the floats up close, early . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Here's some of what we saw . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Because of tree branches and wires overhead, the taller floats are built and transported in pieces and put together at the site . . .

Photobucket

Peepy was quite taken with the Official Motor Scooters and caught a ride on one . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Speaking of rides, here's a peek at where the driver sits on one of the floats . . .

Photobucket

Look! It's our hometown float -- South Pasadena!!!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Yes, those are POTATOES . . .

Photobucket

So nice to see them, especially because there was a potato crisis. Just check out this Facebook post . . .

Photobucket

Luckily, the community rallied around the Great Potato Shortage of South Pasadena and the float was completed!

Can you find Peepy?

Photobucket Photobucket

More floats ahead!!!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And LOOK -- it's the Rose Parade Queen . . .

Photobucket

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Last Year's News and Happy 2012!!!!

PHEW!

I don't know about you, but I'm exhausted. 2011 was a real whirlwind year. Here are some blog-lights (that's highlights, only in blog speak) . . .

JANUARY began with the announcement of American Girl's 2011 Girl of the Year . . . written by Moi!!!

I finally got to blog about how the book was written and all the research, including finding out about the endangered monk seals and learning to surf . . .

I also flew to Kauai for a week to help spread the word about the endangered Hawaiian monk seals, like those in Kanani's stories. The trip was, um, er, strictly business, of course . . .

JUNE saw the debut of a new author named Ransom Riggs, also it was the month of BookExpo America in New York where, in addition to seeing great authors/illustrators I got to hang out with the most marvelous Jeannie Birdsall and my editors Cheryl Klein and Arthur Levine. I also signed lots and lots of Kanani books . . .

JULY was my very first Comic Con in San Diego. I loved the parties and the drama of it all . . .

Plus, my Klingon came in handy . . .

AUGUST is when the annual SCBWI Summer Conference takes place. It's illuminating to talk to super famous authors like Judy Blume and Richard Peck, even if they do argue over who gets to hold Peepy . . .

SEPTEMBER was super packed. We were in New York at Scholastic headquarters, and San Luis Obispo, and Louisville, KY, and Tampa, FL. Plus, we blogged about Washington, DC and the National Book Festival where we were Wonderstruck by all the literary stars, including HUGO's Brian Selznick and his shoes . . .

Heading toward, OCTOBER, we continued our blogs about the National Book Festival, this time reporting on Lauren Myracle's arrest and other incidents . . .

Photobucket

In OCTOBER we traveled to Florida for FAME and also to headed to Alabama for some down home folk art and fun . . .
