(Senator Franken) – The collapse of the housing market caused the property value of countless Americans' homes to plummet. This drop in value, combined with the downturn in the economy, made it harder for homeowners to keep up with mortgage payments. Many Minnesotans dealt with the problem by securing a mortgage modification through their banks. Moses Smith, a chiropractor from Minneapolis, decided to try this approach. In 2009 she went to her bank and was approved for a permanent mortgage modification.Everything seemed to be going fine. Ms. Smith made sure an attorney reviewed the paperwork and had it notarized. She also sent in her monthly payment on time. But nearly a year later, Ms. Smith received an unpleasant surprise.

National Journal: Senate Judiciary Committee Announces Subcommittee Assignments

The Senate Judiciary Committee is taking on privacy issues with Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., designated to chair a new subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, while Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has been named as ranking member, according to an announcement Monday.

The city of Moorhead received a promise of support from leaders at the state and national levels Friday as it prepares for flooding in 2011.



Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., and Gov. Mark Dayton were at the Moorhead City Council chambers to make a promise that the city is not alone in flood fighting this year.
