Washington — Negotiations are underway between the Republicans in the House and Democrats in the Senate to finish a bill to fund the government through the rest of the fiscal year.

Arstechnica: Defining Internet "freedom": Ars interviews Senator Al Franken
Since winning election to the US Senate in 2008, Al Franken (D-MN) has become one of that chamber's top net neutrality defenders. With the House uninterested in compromise on the issue, the real push to gut the FCC's existing net neutrality order will take place this year in the Senate.
Last week, Franken and three other senators drafted a letter in which they blasted the House for trying to "defund" the FCC's net neutrality enforcement. House Republicans "claim to stand for freedom," the letter says (PDF). "But the only freedom they are providing for is the freedom of telephone and cable companies to determine the future of the Internet, where you can go on it, what you can attach to it, and which services will win or lose on it."

Bemidji Pioneer: Pioneer Editorial: Franken bill would fund STEM help
If Minnesota is to compete in the global marketplace, Minnesota students must become more proficient in STEM skills — Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Sen. Al Franken, DFL-Minn., announced Thursday that he will introduce legislation that will invest in STEM education, a good first step.
Sen. Franken's legislation would establish a STEM Master Teacher Corps for top K-12 teachers. The master teachers in the program would mentor beginning or less effective teachers, in addition to networking with one another and sharing best practices and classroom resources.

The Hill: In rare comment on national events, Franken says Walker is out to 'bust' union
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is trying to "bust" unions with a bill that would curtail certain bargaining rights, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) said Thursday.
"I think the governor is clear that he's trying to union bust," Franken said at a press conference, according to The Minnesota Star-Tribune. "He's gotten the concessions on salaries and pensions that he wants."
It's a rare comment by Franken on a national event. The first-term senator typically concentrates on issues related to his state.
