Today, Sen. Al Franken backed a measure that would penalize oil companies for allowing millions of acres of federal lands they've leased for oil exploration to lie dormant, saying the potential for finding billions of barrels of untapped oil could help lower fuel prices in Minnesota and across the country.

Star Tribune: Franken, Paul form unlikely Senate duo
When Republican Rand Paul was elected to the Senate in November, he received a congratulatory call from an unexpected source: U.S. Sen. Al Franken.
That 30-minute phone call — the only one Paul received from a Democrat after Election Day — has sparked an unlikely friendship between the Kentucky Tea Party conservative and an unapologetic Minnesota liberal. Franken attended Paul's party after he was sworn in as a senator, and Paul asked Franken to be his Democratic Senate mentor.

AV Club Twin Cities: How Minnesota keeps the Internet weird
On Monday, Senator Al Franken spoke about Net neutrality at the South By Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, TX, where he delivered the following quotable plea: "Let's keep the Internet weird." He was of course playing to the local Austin setting, a city that has adopted the motto "Keep Austin Weird" in an effort to sustain their off-kilter lifestyles, as well as their reputation as artsy weirdos of the South. This of course got us thinking about the copious amount of weird Minnesota has to offer the world. Famed for being nice, cold, and full of pleasant people, Minnesotans can also be honest, passive-aggressive, blunt, rude, or any other adjective attributed to any other human. And you know what? Minnesotans can be weird. We have proof. It's on the Internet.

TheUptake: Right Wing, Telecoms "Making Things Up" About Net Neutrality Says Sen. Franken
Senator Al Franken takes his advocacy for internet neutrality to South By Southwest (SXSW), a music festival that has also become a meeting spot for technical entrepreneurs from all over the world. Senator Franken talks about how big corporations and Republicans in Congress are trying to undermine "net neutrality" at every turn. Large corporations are pressuring congress to allow some internet websites to have priority on the internet if they pay for it. Doing so could threaten the open exchange of ideas and media that the internet has fostered.
