Minnesota Independent: Franken sponsors immigration rights for same-sex couples
Sen. Al Franken is the sponsor of legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate late last week that would give binational same-sex couples the same rights as married couples for immigration purposes. The Uniting American Families Act is authored by Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont and is sponsored by 18 other Democrats.

Northland's News Center: MN Senators Honor NCAA Champion Bulldogs In Resolution
U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken have introduced a resolution honoring the University of Minnesota-Duluth men's hockey team for capturing the 2010-2011 NCAA championship title.
The Bulldogs capped off their season with a 3-2 sudden death win over Michigan in the NCAA final at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center.

MPR: Debt ceiling fight has Franken concerned
DFL Sen. Al Franken appeared on MPR's Midday today to discuss the budget battle in Washington, President Obama's speech and other issues facing Congress. During the conversation, Franken expressed concern that the federal government could eventually default on its debt for the first time in the nation's history.

Grand Forks Herald: Franken visits EGF while touring Red River Valley flood fight
After three consecutive years of major spring flooding, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., said Minnesota communities in the Red River Valley are becoming experts at holding back raging flood waters.
"That's the advantage of having a flood every year, and I think it's the only advantage," he said.

Ars Technica: The four enemies of indie Internet TV
As Ars readers know, one of the nation's biggest ISPs recently acquired one of the country's biggest TV networks. The union of Comcast and NBC Universal isn't as dark and dire a prospect as its loudest critics proclaimed. As Congress and the FCC pondered the marriage, the economist Thomas Hazlett noted that the combination would only represent around 12 percent of total cable network revenues.
"This will yield some economies of scale, or so Comcast hopes, but it hardly moves the needle in terms of the concentration of the industry," Hazlett observed.

Northlands News Center: Senator Franken Votes to Help Small Business
Small business owners who may have been buried in paperwork are getting some help from Congress.
The U.S. Senate this week voted to repeal a provision that, starting in 2012, would have forced business owners to file tax forms for every vendor selling them more than $600 of goods each year.

WCCO: Good Question: What Happens In A Government Shutdown?
The clock is ticking and congress has until Friday to pass a budget authorization bill, or the federal government will have to shut down. So, what happens if the government shuts down, and what's the cost?
"I'm just having a hard time getting my arms around what it means to shut down," said Marijo Goldstein, a Minneapolis woman with family members who will be furloughed if the government does shut down.
