The Weekly Rune – Ingwaz

For the week 11 January 2015

Interesting that last week’s rune was Perthro reversed, under the tone of Eihwaz as the half-month, and this week, the half-month stave changes mid-week (13 Jan) to Perthro. Seems the message of chance abounds.

This week sees the hand off of the half-month rune, from Eihwaz to Perthro. As discussed last week, Eihwaz speaks of the end of something, particularly seeing initiation through to its finish. Perthro emphasizes chance, choice. It points to a dynamic that is no longer karmic, but opened to free will. Learn more about the influence of the half-month rune at Patreon.

Ingwaz is correlated to the Germanic god Ing, though if we’re going to tell his story, we also have to tell that of his people. Considered Tuisto by some interpretations of Tacitus’ Germania (making Tuisto a Germanic ancestor of Mannus), through his sacrifice when the human race was on the brink of extinction, Tuisto created the Ingaevones people (also the tribes of the Herminones–for you Harry Potter fans–and the Istaevones). When push came to shove and humanity was dying, he grieved his losses and made a new race.

This stave calls to mind the adage, “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” While it portends the end of a cycle, it also brings a sense of survival and sacrifice to get there.

Notice Ingwaz can’t be reversed. Change can’t be avoided, and for this time sacrifice can’t, either.

Ingwaz is what I call a ‘hinge’ Rune, in that it’s about that tiny space–or maybe nonspace–between Here—> and

Ingwaz brings us an initiatory moment. It is our choice what to do with it. Bring in coping skills, support systems, and internal wisdom to bring the intiation all the way through.

Eihwaz says it’s time. Perthro brings freedom from karmic repeat. Ingwaz jumps in with both feet.

The Weekly Rune – Perthro Reversed

In light of taking the weekly runic readings a bit deeper, I’m including the half-month rune, in addition to the stave drawn for this week. Reading both of these runes gives the outlook a bit more complexity, and incorporates the natural time cycle of the runes. To learn more about how the half-month rune affects The Weekly Rune, read the full runecast at Patreon.

Read right to left, the half-month stave is Eihwaz, with Pertho reversed to its left.

Support The Weekly RuneMany think of Perthro as luck, though chance is perhaps a better modern understanding. We generally think of luck as good or bad, and Perthro–particularly reversed–brings more to the party than that. It plucks the strings of orlog, or “primal law,” comprised of our interaction in the wyrd. In other words, how we’ve lived is what we manifest. Flow with primal law, and before us unfolds a life of synergy and connection. Clash, and conflict prevails.

Reversed, Perthro says that story isn’t going so well. It suggests hope outweighing actual effort that’s been put in for the outcome. Life force is scattered, with too much emphasis on what is coming, rather than on the present.

Now is the time to focus. Laugh, and realize the places where things aren’t coming together well. Revamp, relax, and flow.

A Year of Gratitude, 2014

For the last two years, every week I write a gratitude post. In addition to that, I’m closing 2014 with the biggies. For these, I’m grateful:

I grieved the life I don’t have and am more peaceful in the present
I overcame my fear of public appearances
I processed the consciousness-altering dream I had in 2013 that changed my cosmology
I had a total breakdown of health and psychology that brought closure to long-seated anxiety
I realized my chemical reality for what it is, at my current age and health
I finally feel my stress is in the present, and that I’m not dragging my past into my present (or being dragged around by it)
I realize the impact PTSD has on the body
I forgave my body for its chronic conditions, and thanked it for carrying me through it all
I published Teen Spirit Guide to Modern Shamanism
I learned a lot about being an adult partner
I learned more about being a good mother
I enjoyed playing more games
I reconnected with Truthsayer
I did lots of sacred decluttering
I experienced fabulous bonding with Tribe
I created the Two-Year Modern Shamanism Intensive
I figured out what I’m doing here, and how I want to do it

The Weekly Rune – Jera

Jera – Harvest – We last saw Jera shortly after Summer Solstice, and now it comes just past Winter Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere, which is its native seasonal place in the Elder Futhark. Associated with Yule, this stave indicates that the year is indeed turning to a new one, and all is as it should be.

This stave indicates a time of accountability. It is a natural harvest point at which we can stand and look back, measure our actions, and, based on those, take pretty accurate stock of where things are headed. Harvest for many is a celebratory time when basic needs are met, possibly with enough to save and share with others. With 2014 in mind, consider what we’ve planted and harvested. What was put into motion last Yule, that has come to fruition, now?

Whether we’re looking at the period since Jera last appeared, the last year, or the last week, Jera is ‘walk, don’t run’ energy. We’ve just come through a major transformation and finally allowed ourselves to enjoy the good things it gifted us. This isn’t the time to sink into frivolity or drop the momentum. It’s also not the time to penny pinch and stuff the mattress out of fear. One of the hardest things to do after success is to sustain the pace–neither speed up nor slow down. Hold steady.

The Weekly Rune – Isa

Isa – ice- Keep cool is the message from this last of the winter Runes. Tuck in and be comfortable, because we’re not going anywhere. I like a message that emphasizes relaxation; however, there’s a more to it than that. At this time, we’re challenged to find comfort in something not so comfy, and that’s not as easy as it sounds.

This stave presents a ‘ring pass not’ component–the idea that  we all have our limits, through which we cannot move until we find the momentum to do so from our deepest reserves. That’s true at this time, though the emphasis isn’t just that we can’t move, we shouldn’t. We always have the option to struggle against flow. Nobody said we have to do things in order.

Except Isa. The whole function of this stave is to stay the course.

It may seem that the pressure comes from the outside. In reality, an aspect of ourselves is pushing for wider awareness, greater expression. The good news is, that aspect already knows what to do. Let it lead.

Yes, this Rune brings reprieve, but that doesn’t have to mean inaction. It doesn’t have to mean subjugation. Use this aside to clarify the parameters under which we become more aware. Maybe that’s the awareness that needs to come–that we have some control over it, how it affects us, how we go forward with it.

I generally think of Isa as bringing a staycation of the soul–the sense of wanting wonder, yet being forced to find it in our own backyard.  This time it’s more of a retreat, and we’re its leaders, as well as attendees. —
