The Affirmation of Chaos

Over the weekend I worked at the largest MBS event hosted on the east coast–the Mind Body Spirit Expo, in Raleigh, NC. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s gone on for almost 20 years, and it attracts certainly the most involved esoteric arts practitioners in NC, but a a great many from the east coast. It’s a huge undertaking, and this year’s spring event was no exception.

spring1For starters, it came on the heels of our coldest winter week, which kept everyone housebound for several days. Expectation told us the warming temps over the weekend would lure seekers to the event, and holy cats, did it. Saturday’s numbers topped 2300, which was the highest number of sales in the history of the Raleigh event.

It was great fun. This time I shared space with my longtime friend, Teresa Mayle, Truthsayer,  who is a gifted tarot reader and Reiki Master in the area. I did rune readings, sold books, and also ritual art items. We were the Modern Mystics, and we had a fabulous turn out.

You name it, and it’s at this event–healers of every modality known, art of just about every soul persuasion, readings, lectures, products. If you haven’t been to such a spectacle,  this Expo is like most other larger cons or pride events,  though they are intended to be an intro to all things metaphysical.  Imagine a large room of small business introverts presenting their trades,  amidst big corporations pushing products, in a sea of eager consumers who often aren’t sure what they’re looking for.  Likewise,  it’s a community of seekers and seers who for a couple of days twice a year become neighbors, comrades, and community.

In reality, it’s a bit overkill for me, of the New Age and mass chaos variety, and everyone who attends or vends it comments on how overbearing it can be. That teeth-tingling vibe is partly what makes this event special, and challenging.  It’s difficult to weave through all of that etheric (and literal) chatter to meet attendees where they are, which is often in need, hurt, or curious to the point of vulnerability. In many ways I feel a heightened sense of responsibility in that dynamic, more than when I meet them in my space, which has been dedicated to soothe nerves and foster power. I’ve agreed to be among that public to create a space that does what it says it does, even if it’s not under the best of circumstances.

spring2I guess we need those odd moments outside the norm now and then–the challenge of creating sacred space in challenging situations. It alters me to work that way–opening the elements that I need to do my work while not encroaching on anyone else’s space or ability to do theirs, and to be forced to find meaning and purpose in the work for attendees, regardless of whether others around me honor my boundaries.

Every time I leave this Expo I’m fried, a little frazzled–OK, a lot. It wasn’t because I felt worn down by the work, or the atmosphere. This time it was because I was absolutely affirmed that we’re all seeking the same release,  clarity, and healing, regardless of which side of the table we’re sitting on. It may be a hot mess to bring such powerful introduction to a new audience.  And somehow, it provides, even amongst all the fray and friction.

Thanks to all of you who came out, to all of the vendors who created the space, and to the myriad spirits of this region who conspire to make this be.

The Weekly Rune – Othala

For the week of 22 February 2015

Through our experience of Sowilo as the half-month presence, there’s been a lightness and comfort that’s permeated this phase of winter. That sense of soul companionship deepens this week with Othala. As Sowilu has shepherded us through the wake of Mercury Retrograde, we’ve had a time of settling, yet also a calling to understand our place in divinity. This emphasis continues through 27 February, when Tiwaz moves to the fore. To learn more about the half-month rune’s influence, visit Patreon.

Read right to left in the image is Sowilu, then Othala.

Buckeye Runes by S. Kelley harrell

Where Sowilu gives us (or challenges us to find) perspective on where we see ourselves in the Divine chain of being, Othala gives poignant clues into what that perspective might be, and who can help us refine it.

All about the ancestors, Othala directs us to look back–way back–to a tribal heritage and means of experiencing the Divine that few of us have been handed down. Most of us don’t recall our tribal origins. We don’tknow what our collective family life purpose may be. We don’t know what our family totems were. We don’t know the Nature Spirits that saw our first dawn.

Now’s the time to learn.

The significance of Othala is where you come from on a star stuff and a transpersonal level. When you have that kind of clarity on why your line came into being, you gain and carry impeccable understanding of your own purpose, and how it fits into the bigger picture. You understand what legacy you are creating. You become a stronger variation of everyone who came before you.

Let the Runes guide you in the best way to prepare for what lies ahead for you. Through the end of February, subscribers to my blog can get 20% off a personal Rune Reading. The Weekly Rune – Ingwaz

For the week of 15 February 2015

With bright Sowilo guiding our half-month, this week’s stave, Ingwaz, brings our attention to community, and how we’re situated in it. All signs point to this as a time of movement, of interconnection with others and self, and of the tending required to spark new creative territory. Sowilu warms us through 27 February, granting us a boost of inspiration. With Ingwaz at the helm this week, we have a focus to which we can direct that inspiration.

To learn more about the half-month rune’s influence, visit Patreon.

Read right to left in the image is Sowilu, then Ingwaz.

Buckeye Runes by S. Kelley harrellWithin that sense of connection Ingwaz brings us community. It gives us the feeling of being an individual among tribe. In terms of the placement of this stave in the Futhark, Ingwaz indicates a new awareness, a new way of looking at ourselves as creative beings.

As if that wasn’t an upshot enough, it assures the manifestation of the heart’s focus. It may not manifest at this time, though the stroke of genius that’s been needed, that will get it moving in that direction, comes now.

Ingwaz is about turning a corner to a brighter outlook, and finding the AHA! moment in ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way.’ It is the result of having done a lot of growth, and having found a balance in honoring rest, and knowing when to act. In the wisdom of the balance manifests the dazzling awareness.

You’ve earned it.

The Weekly Rune – Ansuz Reversed

For the week of 8 February 2015

Still under the half-month influence of Algiz, this week’s stave, Ansuz reversed, asks us to consider to what we give our life force. This emphasis is particularly shaped by how we speak, or how we convey our truth. That Ansuz is reversed, and given that we have a bit more to go in Mercury retrograde, it’s caution worth slowing down and heeding.

Read right to left in the image is Algiz, then  Ansuz reversed.

Algiz remains the half-month rune through mid-Friday, at which point Sowilu’s influence dawns, warming us through 28 February. Given this transition, keep in mind we are still under the protection of Algiz, so we have a bit of natural buffer giving us cover.

To learn more about the half-monthy rune’s influence, visit Patreon.

For now, the reversal of Ansuz as the life force most significant to us, be careful with words. Pause before speaking, and certainly give attention to any internal garbled signals, symbolism, or inability to articulate self. There’s a reason the words aren’t coming right now, and trying to force them will make a big mess.

Coming off the warrior energy of last week, there will be a drive to do exactly that–just into the driver’s seat, straighten things out, and move on down the road. Resist the urge. That tide is shifting out, and it will only cause more distress for all involved. The last few weeks have been rough enough. Just stand down and listen.
