The Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

Nauthiz – Need – Visited just last month by this stave, we again find ourselves at a pause with this middle stave of the second ǽtt’s winter trio. Having greeted us several times this year, We’ve had many such pauses, and by now know to take them seriously.

Situated between Hagalaz (harsh external change) and Isa (processing outcomes), Nauthiz forces us to confront our limitations and what we’re getting out of them. By that I mean, it highlights the things we say we don’t want, yet hold fastest to. This stave is the niggling feeling that all is not well, without knowing what needs attention. However, often just honoring that something isn’t right is enough to bring mild reprieve, perhaps even movement toward resolution.

In order to meet a need, we have to be able to recognize it when it comes on the scene, then choose to either fulfill or reject it. One way or another, something has to give. We choose to preserve self and fulfill or reject that need, or we stay locked in karmic purgatory stewing in our own fears.

The choice is ours, though Nauthiz brings the leverage to be done with it. It is an omen that wanrs us to deal with the past now, before it becomes our future.

The full Weekly Rune, and other goodies, are available at Patreon.

Also, you can now order Rune Readings through Etsy!

The Weekly Rune – Fehu Reversed

Fehu – wealth – Interesting that Fehu, the rune of wealth, visits us reversed, as we move into Jupiter Retrograde, tomorrow (8 December 2014 – 9 April 2015). Jupiter is associated with luck, excess, and all things good fortune. While not exactly the same focus as Fehu, the tightening of belts, literally and figuratively, is felt. Note that Fehu is pictured brightstave.

Reading Fehu reversed is fairly straightforward: when upside down, our possessions fall out of our pockets. Maybe that’s figurative; perhaps it’s literal. What’s certain is the frustration of the efforts of hard work falling through our fingers, and the refinement of focus from a dangling carrot to what assets are really needed at this time.

Happy freaking holidays, yes?

There’s more to it, though. Instead of focusing on how to hold onto what’s slipping away, we can explore the idea that it isn’t gone, it’s just no longer ours. That’s not an easy philosophy to embrace, given that the western mind posits “money” into the concept of Fehu. It isn’t that the association is flawed, so much as incomplete.

The emphasis this week isn’t have or have not, but how to carry what we have differently, with the idea that all belongs to all, already. Nothing is separate or “ours,” and getting in the center of that understanding can help how we work with wealth–it’s coming or it’s going. How can we become more comfortable with the rhythm of tending our wealth as if it was alive, letting it go, allowing it or other treasure to return?

The Weekly Rune – Othala Reversed

Othala – property – It’s been a long time since Othala appeared as The Weekly Rune, particularly presenting as reversed. In fact, it was November of last year, at the start of the holiday season. Intriguing that it visits now, as we transition into Yuletide. Note that the image shows Othala upright, or bright-stave.

Most regard Othala as the final Rune in the third aett, though some scholars position it elsewhere. Regardless of where it’s located, the agreement of its emphasis on inheritance remains the focus (Do comment if you have thoughts on its alternate placements!).

Spiritually speaking, it calls our attention to the wisdom of our ancestors, and calls us to own ourselves as part of that wise legacy. In other words, Othala makes us deal with our crap, so that we can see ourselves as informed support in our own council. A typical reversed reading would force us to deal with what smothers us–possessions, beliefs, thought processes, etc, with commentary on prefering the hell we know, fear of change and how that would affect status quo.

The impeccable timing of this stave speaks to something else, especially given that it’s come two years in a row at this same stellar point, and it’s perhaps the most uncomfortable subject of all this time of year: dealing with family.

Whatever the holidays bring, for most people they dredge up the absolute most catalyzing issues related to family, whether it’s the family we have, but the family we don’t have.

Othala reversed demands that we own the shadow of family along with its strengths. This doesn’t mean we can resolve an abusive past or deep hurts within the family this week. Maybe it means exactly that. But it does mean that the more peace we can find spiritually owning that such is part of who we are–not just who the rest of our family is–we can better connect with our ancestral allies.

We don’t have to become the dark parts to bless them and move beyond them. We just have to realize them, own that they are part of our wider etheric awareness of self, and remember that we can choose how we move forward in that knowledge.  Read more…
