The Weekly Rune – Uruz
Uruz – Auroch – Having moved through last week’s question posed by Perthro, this week The Weekly Rune gives us the momentum to act on that answer. As I am fond of saying, anytime the wild things show up, it’s about to go big. Uruz is the second Rune in the First Aett (though some argue that it’s the first–do discuss!). The point of mentioning its position in the futhark is we’re dealing with giants, and in Old Icelandic cosmology, they are the real movers and shakers. They are unconscious urges. So when I say big, I mean gigantic.
From that cosmology, the giants created everything. That’s a very vague statement, considering the colorful path from Void to Being. Specifically from the standpoint of Uruz, the focus is Audhumla, or the feminine principal embodied as a sacred cow. Across pantheons, we’re visited with the symbolism of the sacred cow mother who feeds the world, a scenario that also echoes through the Norse creation story Considering Audhumla as Uruz, not only did she play a role in creating those we know as “the gods,” she was also involved in the creation of humanity, and possibly other races in the Norse pantheon.
This week, hold your dreams well, because Audhumla truly is the star stuff of creative life force, and the action to bring it into being.

The Weekly Rune – Perthro Reversed
Perthro – chance – Clients laugh when I call Perthro the “What do you think?” Rune. I can never tell if it’s because they think I’m joking, or if it’s nervous laughter in anticipation of having to divulge what they really think. In truth, that awkward uncertainty is the very essence of Perthro. Note that the stave is pictured brightstave.
Reversed, as Perthro is this week, it takes on a very personal tone. While its meaning is hotly debated, regarded as luck, birth, secret, and even dice cup, each of these possibilities brings its element of mystery to the fore, and emphasizes forces coming together to an outcome. What outcome, we don’t know, and we can’t know.
Significant to me about this Rune is its cobbling of mystery with effort, without knowing what will be. In that light, Perthro speaks of chance, and perhaps even more so of faith.
It isn’t about the dues we’ve paid, just desserts, or the rote churning out of expected behaviour. This week something from within changes the story, and sheds deeper insight not just on where we’re going, but why we want to go there. Indeed, what do you think?

The Weekly Rune – Sowilo
Sowilo – Sun – Sowilo – Sun – It’s telling that the stave presenting itself as the North Hemisphere moves into darkness, as the Southern Hemisphere moves into the light, is Sowilo. Impressive, how our vantage point of the sun determines so much about our lives!
Samhain, by the books, was this past Friday. The period that follows it, though, The Dark Time, spans until Winter Solstice. It’s a figurative thirteenth month, a time out of ordinary observation, when our awareness is heightened and we have the rare opportunity for Nature to serve us up to raw consciousness. Maybe the veil does get thinner, now–it’s always thin to me. One thing I have witnessed time and again, this time of year we are etherically thinner. We are more receptive and awake. That the sun lends its vacuous connections to that mix this week is telling.
In this way, when we look at the sun, we become aware that we are part of the life it imparts. Source behind it shines through on us, so that we may shine on others. This is our most perfect destiny, as much as our legacy, and this week we are reminded that we are part of a fathomless channel of consciousness.
