Story updates

Sorry! It’s been quite a while since I have posted a story update. Tons of reasons, most of them that I’ve been so busy I forgot. So here is what is going on at the moment:

‘Dark Eyes’ is progressing slowly but steadily. Part 12 has been posted last week, part 15 is will be done by the end of the week, so I can start on part 16 over the weekend.

I may have mentioned this before – or maybe not – but I expect the online version of the novel will consists of 25 parts when it’s done.

‘Kalbrandt Institute Archives’ has moved to the fast track. What was going to be a short story collection is rapidly becoming a small novel, which I hope to have ready for publication this summer. I’m well on my way to completing the first draft of the ‘framework story’ that connects the individual short stories within. I plan to share more of this project’s progress in the next newsletter.

The ‘Res Arcana’ booklets are slowing but not stalling. ‘Wands’ is planned and the cover is already done. In between the two big projects above I need about a month to complete it, and publication of the ebooklet is planned for late June. I’m also planning the stories for the final booklet in the series, ‘Majeur’, as well as making preparations for a printed anthology that contains all ‘Res Arcana’ flash fics as well as several new ones! Enough happening there, too :)

And somewhere in that mayhem I will be graduating, too! Yesss! Five years of hard work fo three new letters to add to my name. I’ll be celebrating that with a trip to London in early June. More on that later. For now, back to writing!

The Audacity!

Today I’ve been playing with Audacity, a free audio recording and editing software that doesn’t just meet expectations, but obliterates them. It is surprisingly simple to use and even without filters or tweeking results in recordings of acceptable quality. I haven’t tried out all the different options and effects yet, but regardless it does what I got it for, and does it above what I had dared to expect of it.

So why am I telling you this?

Because what I got this software for is to record my voice… as I read parts of my work to you. I have done recordings for audiobooks before, so why not do the same for my own stories? Snippets, scenes, chapters, entire books – it’s all possible!

But let’s start small: Today I have made a try-out recording of me reading a scene from the upcoming “The Kalbrandt Institute Archives”.  It’s short, just over 2,5 minutes, but after I sent it out for a test drive this afternoon, I got a lot of enthusiastic responses within the hour. Hopefully that means I’ve done something right! :)

Curious? I will include this recording the tomorrow’s newsletter!

Kalbrandt Institute Archives – snippet

Excerpt from file F/41923/SM:

He had never dreaded playing back his recordings. Twelve years ago, the Institute had hired him for his technical skills and his inventions. Hearing the ghostly sounds his recorders picked up had never been more than a by-product of his work. Doing field tests of his inventions had been a logical next step, conducting investigations solo the one thereafter. All this time, the cries and whispers had made him uneasy at best, but they had never scared him. Why would they? The dead were dead. What he did with his machines was best described as acoustic archaeology, in that respect.

Yet the prospect of playing last night’s recording filled his insides with ice. Archaeologists didn’t talk to the bones they unearthed, or if they did, they didn’t expect an answer. After what he had done last night, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

These KI stories are far longer than I ever anticipated, never mind far more complex. But fun!
