Cabin Fever

Snowy-Lancaster-County

Snowy Lancaster County, PA

Do Amish get Cabin Fever? No TV or Internet, nor four-wheel-drive vehicle to scoot them to the store or jet their children off to school, which rarely closes due to inclement weather. (Some Amish hire English drivers.)

What would an Amish mom do during a snowstorm? Perhaps an early morning load of laundry, which might dry in the basement should her home have one. She might help her husband with chores, prepare breakfast, clean the kitchen, bake, s...

Honestly Amish

No idea what this means, but it caught my eye.

No idea what this means, but it caught my eye.

The Amish sincerely attempt to adhere to the Bible’s teaching. If caught in a lie, an Amish church member might hear a minister or bishop rapping on the door, and later find themselves in kneeling confession before the congregation. Of course, the Amish struggle with living a righteous life, as most of us do. But they dwell in communities of fellow believers.

Greetings, everyone!

Cherry-Blossoms

If the weather outside is frightful or delightful, I hope you’re enjoying your day. We’ve had a bit of everything over the last month except snow. But sometimes our cold weather doesn’t barge in until February. And yet I noticed these early cherry blossoms yesterday, in January. Poor little guys if we have a blast from the north.

Mount-Baker

This photo of majestic Mount Baker, where I’ve skied many times, was taken from my mother-in-law’s home. Photo of the hummingbird was taken from our kitchen. I know,...

Resolutions

I’ve been pondering New Year’s resolutions. I’m not sure why, because I can’t recall ever making one. Although I could have forgotten, just as I did the resolution.

Not knowing where to turn for information, I tried Google. Even Psychology Today weighed in on the topic. Not that I consider that magazine an infallible source nor did the author provide credentials.

According to one article, over a third of the resolutions disintegrate before the end of January, and more than three quarters are ab...

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

Dear Readers & Visitors to my blog, I appreciate you! Thanks for stopping by!

12-22-14GreatExpectationRecently, I watched the 1946 movie Great Expectations on TV. I’d read the Charles Dickens novel about ten years ago & was surprised to find I preferred the black-and-white movie. The title got me thinking. This is the time of year of great expectations: must-do lists, shopping for food and presents at chaotic stores without ample parking, trying to second-guess a recipient’s wishes, hurry up and finish cooking or sew...

Amish Cozy Mysteries

Please give a warm welcome to my guest, Vanetta Chapman.

Vannetta-ChapmanMurder Tightly Knit releases today (December 16), and I thought I’d share with you a little bit about the genre of Amish cozy mysteries. This is the second book in my Amish Village Mystery series—the first was Murder Simply Brewed (ebook is now on sale for $2.99) and the third, Murder Freshly Baked will release in the summer of 2015. Each is a stand-alone story, but share the same characters who are solving a different “case.”

Too Stressed to Be Blessed?

“I usually have my Christmas shopping done by now,” a girlfriend told me last week.

My stomach lurched. “Really?” I was astounded, because I knew she wasn’t shipping overseas. I was just happy we’d purchased a birthday gift for our grandson, who’s about to turn six. Was I living in the land of denial? No, I reminded myself, we haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving yet. And I’m busy finishing a manuscript. Shopping can wait, although retailers are raring to go, as if the world is spinning at dou...
