Amish Collectibles?
Am I the only person who hides things from herself? With the best of intentions, mind you. I did it again last week. Before company arrived, I dashed around picking up and straightening. In my hurry, I stuffed a mish-mash of business cards, pens, and do-dads into a plastic bag, and stowed them out of sight. And apparently out of mind.
A few days later, I checked every nook and cranny looking for the bag. On the bottom shelves of the dining room cupboards I scrutinized my collection of pink De...

These pots inspire me. Except one, even though it needs no watering!

I love this sweet and simple pot.

Could not help admiring this canine planter!

This pot is owned by a dear and practical man.

More to Learn from the Amish
Am I the only one left who thinks boys and girls are different? In my experience, boys tend to be boys, no matter how much their mothers dislike their converting sticks into weapons or throwing rocks. And girls? Well, they are far more apt to like this little Amish-made doll.

Do you think a man or woman owns this pickup?
Some might disagree. They could scoff at the fact that as a child I wanted to be like my mother. All nurture versus nature, they’d claim, not knowing that I was a bit of a To...

My husband and I spent a peaceful weekend at our beach cabin.

Saw this cute bit of whimsy down the beach.

On a sunny day the view from our deck is Mount Baker.

Our neighbors are getting a new bulkhead!

Took a breather on our long beach walk.

Sensational
The nervous system has a specific organ devoted to each of our five senses: Sight, Hearing, Taste, Smell, and Touch.
Can you hear a sparrow twittering outside, feel the softness of an Amish quilt, detect the fragrance of your favorite tea or brew of coffee? Three of your senses are having a field-day.
An aroma can catapult me back to the past. To my childhood. For instance, I still love the smell of mothballs; they remind me of my grandma’s attic in Litchfield County, CT. The core of her hous...

Hurry Up or Slow Down?

What’s the hurry?
Is the whole world in a hurry? Try standing on a bustling city street and you may be swept away like a piece of driftwood. Or driving the speed limit on a country road. I’ve pulled off to the shoulder to allow a truck on my bumper to pass. Let him get the ticket, I’ve told myself. Plus, I want to see the scenery! Wasn’t that my motivation for driving this route instead of the freeway?
Can you think of anyone who doesn’t hurry? Even the Amish. One evening in Lancaster County,...

Mother’s Day Expectations
Last week, while we enjoyed lunch with my mother-in-law, my husband mentioned Mother’s Day. His mom’s eyes lit up; she loves parties. The two decided it should be celebrated at our house. My husband’s handy in the kitchen and I’ve often told him since I’m not his mother, please concentrate on her. She won’t be with us forever.

A lovely visit with my mother-in-law.
Some wives might come unglued if their husbands didn’t put on a big show for them alone. Is there something wrong with me? Now, if...
