Comfort Food

When you hear the words Comfort Food what do you think? Ice Cream? Mashed Potatoes? Popcorn? Amish Whoopee Pies?

I admit I’ve eaten a bowl of popcorn for dinner!

I admit I’ve eaten a bowl of popcorn for dinner!

A friend recently told me that foods consumed by a child or pre-teen become that person’s comfort food for life. Really? I got online and started to research. Sure enough, I found studies proving he was correct.

On the other hand, I also read several articles based on studies claiming the consumption of Comfort Foods brings no comfor...

Amish in Ireland?

IrishCabinets

Decorations abound!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! What are the Irish most noted for? Their mouth-watering food, their poetsandauthors, music and dancing? Their folklore?

I just met a fine Irish terrier named Red.

I just met a fine Irish terrier named Red.

Their Amish community? Huh?

Last week, when I told a friend I was posting a blog on Saint Paddy’s Day, she asked about the Amish living in Ireland. I told her there weren’t any. But the idea niggled in my head.

I scanned Google, but knew not to accept what I stumbled upon as reliable. So...

Interview with Suzanne Woods Fisher about “Anna’s Crossing”

Anna's-Crossing

Suzanne, I admire your writing and enjoy reading your books immensely.

I imagine your newest novel Anna’s Crossing required a great deal of digging, studying, and research.Any stories you can share about that process?

Here’s one I think you’ll appreciate: I wrote back and forth with an Amish historian (who is, indeed, Old Order Amish. No phone calls or e-mail! A rather slow process). This gentleman has been a wonderful resource for me on a number of occasions, but it always takes a few letters...

Born Old-fashioned?

People have often asked me why millions are intrigued with the Amish. Is it their slow pace of life? Their commitment to God and community? The fact they cling to their traditions and rarely change?

Are some people born old fashioned? I grew up in a home where items with a history were admired. My father was a Classics professor (Latin & Ancient Greek) and my mother was a portrait sculptress. Our house was awash with worn oriental carpets, copies of medieval art, and statuary.
