Let It Be Sunday, 257!

Let It Be Sunday, 257!

Hello dear friends!  Welcome to another fine Sunday.

This week has felt like a week of waiting.  A week of refreshing my email.  A week of waiting for permissions and collaborations, and checks.  It’s ok. I’ve steadied myself for a windfall of tasks next week. Hopefully. Maybe.

This week has also been a flurry of election and impeachment stuffs.  I can’t be alone in wanting to just touch all of the media on the shoulder and ask them to sssshhhhhhh…..

My New Orleans Favorites, Winter + Spring 2020

My New Orleans Favorites, Winter + Spring 2020

Hello friends!

Down here in New Orleans we’re adding to the long list of reasons you should come plan your visit! We’re gearing up Mardi Gras, we’re tuning the instruments for Jazz Fest, we’re always always always cooking, and we’re praying for warm but not rainy weather for Fat Tuesday.  What I’m saying is… we’re making it NICE for you.

Now all you have to do is make your way down here.

Every year I write a short list of my favorite spots in New Orleans.

Let It Be Sunday, 256!

Let It Be Sunday, 256!

Hello dear friends!

Welcome to another fine Sunday!  We made it through January!  I’m not alone in feeling like January was a full 7 years long, right!? Like… I full abandoned and then recommitted to my New Year’s Resolutions all within the first month of the year.  What a trip, honestly. Let’s see what February has up its sleeve.  Another month of hustling to make dinner / our own dreams come true?  Sure.

Savory King Cake with Zatarain’s Smoked Sausage

Savory King Cake with Zatarain’s Smoked Sausage

We take our king cakes very seriously this time of year.  We take them seriously and we take them every which way.

The rule is: the person who finds the baby inside of their king cake slice, has to buy the next king cake for everyone.  It’s a never ending cycle which means there is always a king cake, everywhere, until Ash Wednesday when we all take a deep breath and slowly step away from the cake.

Most king cakes are sweet, cinnamon roll type pastry, buttery rich and topped with a sweet (cream cheese, if we’re lucky) glaze.  Other king cakes are more puff pastry than not, filled with an indulgent nut filling – like an almond croissant but whoa… a king cake.

The most elusive is the savory king cake.

Dad’s Lemon Chess Pie

Dad’s Lemon Chess Pie

I went back to Los Angeles for a quick visit a few weeks ago.

I spare my parents from picking me up at the airport, and I still have my house key on my ring, so I came back home to not much fanfare save for my dad in the kitchen meticulously kneading together a pie crust.

He mentioned wanting to perfect his Lemon Chess Pie which… if you were to ask me… was already pretty dang perfect.

I moseyed into the kitchen the following morning to my dad taking his parbaked crust out of the oven.  Ok ok..

Let It Be Sunday, 255!

Let It Be Sunday, 255!

Hello friends and welcome to your Sunday!  I’m keeping it short this week since it’s been a long week and I’ve promised to live a life off of the computer this weekend.  I hope this finds you happy and well, with a good amount of time for yourself today (if you’re into that sort of thing).

Here’s a short list of what I’ve read this week.  As always, take only what you need.

  Please know Ella Baker .

Tahini Flax Seed Banana Bread

Tahini Flax Seed Banana Bread

I did it again. I bought bananas with great hopes of probably smoothies and healthy afternoon snacks and here we are – where we always end up – at banana bread.

Honestly it’s what we deserve and where we belong so why fight it?

Today’s recipe offering is a must-make.  While I think everything I post is delicious, go ahead and put a little star next to this recipe.  Maybe let your bananas go a few extra days so you’ll feel obligated.

We’re bringing together tahini and flax, adding moisture and a round, nutty flavor to our bread.  Not a thing wrong with it, I’ll tell you that much.

Let’s get going!

Let It Be Sunday, 254!

Let It Be Sunday, 254!

Hello friends!  Happy Sunday!

I feel like everyone is talking about Paris Hilton’s lasagna… but, I’m not.

This weekend we hosted our first Bakehouse workshop of the year and it feels good to fill this space with people again.  It’s always fun and a little rowdy and I wouldn’t like it any other way. I had to hold on tight to this week. It felt like juggling with too many balls… and maybe I just learned how to juggle… but I’ve got guts so just go for it.  That feeling is all of us, all the time, right?

Easy One-Dish King Cake

Easy One-Dish King Cake

I’ve got a long list of King Cakes to make this carnival season.  They vary in degrees of complication and amounts of butter.  Most are sweet. One is savory.  All are being testing this month and shaping up to be deeply delicious.

Lord knows there’s no shortage of King Cake around here.  There’s an Original King Cake which is essentially a giant cinnamon roll rounded into a cake shape.  There’s Cinnamon Roll King Cake which slices the rolls into a ring.  There’s my favorite Galette des Rois Cookies that turn a traditional French King Cake into small cookies using a homemade quick puff pastry.  And there will be more because Mardi Gras is about excess (and glitter and parades and throws and friends and cocktail and jambalaya and the most fun – it’s really just the most fun).

Today’s offering is a very simple king cake.

Let It Be Sunday, 253!

Let It Be Sunday, 253!

Hello friends!

Welcome to another Sunday!

This week I’ve been back and forth to Los Angeles for a quick family trip which always jumbles up my week and clouds how I feel about whether I’ve done a dang thing or not.  Turns out I likely have done all sorts of productive things and there are likely many more days to keep trying. Family time is important and always pretty precious.  My parents and I watched a talking dog movie and cried… all of us.  You try watching A Dog’s Purpose without shedding a tear.  I think it’s actually impossible.

While I was home in LA my dad made a Chess Pie.
