Roasted Lemon Chicken Soup

Roasted Lemon Chicken Soup

.

One of my favorite Mardi Gras costumes this year was a woman with a jacket embroidered with the message” I’m ok! You’re ok!”  It felt both celebratory and comforting and like a mini pep-talk to all of us.

I’m ok! You’re ok!

Sure, it may not always be true. What’s always true is that I’m more ok when you’re ok – and we all have the blessed work of taking care of one another.  That feels especially true this week and these days.  Though… taking care of each other looks more like staying away from each other and that’s a hard thing to grapple with.

I’ve been looking for calm and comfort all week so my offering today is warm and broth-y.  It could have just as easily been melty and chocolate so certainly feel free to choose what feels best for you.

If soup resonates with you this weekend, please also consider this silky smooth Carrot Coconut Red Curry or deeply hearty Smoky Black Bean Soup.

Roasted Meyer Lemons

Roasted Meyer Lemons

I love to roast a whole thing.  Come late winter (I know we’ve had it mild, but still) I’m ready to stick the entirety of something in the oven, crank up the heat, and let it go until it’s reduced to a bubbling, golden, caramelized dream.

It’s a comfort and without much slicing and dicing, it’s deeply easy.

Consider the whole roasted onions.  Bathe in the cheddar beer sauce with a whole roasted cauliflower.

Let It Be Sunday, 261!

Let It Be Sunday, 261!

Hello friends! Welcome to another sweet Sunday.

We’ve lost an hour but we’ve gained a springtime sunset. It’s a solid trade.  I’ve spent half of this week in Charleston, SC teaching, demo-ing beignets, shaking hands and seeing old friends at the Charleston Wine and Food festival.  Fun?  Truly. A little overwhelming? Sure, there’s that too.  The best part of this trip to Charleston has been the oysters and the low country cooking.

Doing-The-Most Chocolate Chip Cookies

Doing-The-Most Chocolate Chip Cookies

It’s not that chocolate chip cookies need anything at all.

They don’t need the razzmatazz. They don’t need and songanddance beyond their own simple perfection.

But…. but but but but.

You know I can’t leave well enough alone around here. If we’re not adding browned butter to cookies then we’re adding an extra pinch of sea salt.  A chocolate chip cookie is perfect unless you want to make it MORE perfect.

Let It Be Sunday, 260!

Let It Be Sunday, 260!

Hello sweet friends! You’re here. I’m here. It’s Sunday. We’ve got a good thing going.

Thank you for sticking with me through Mardi Gras season. I know it’s a weird thing to get into if your whole city hasn’t also exploded in glitter so – thank you for the grace.

I hate to be the one to break it to you but… February has run like sand through our fingers and here we are in March which means it’s almost Thanksgiving but everything is fine.

Cheddar Scallion English Muffin Bread

Cheddar Scallion English Muffin Bread

There are truly a million ways to do carbs at breakfast.  I know because I’ve tried most, if not all of them.  I mean… there are at least a hundred thousand ways to pancake alone.  We’re thankful, especially on the weekend.

My latest morning carb craving has been English Muffins and as a baker, I’m more than happy to buy them at the store and skip all the work of resting, rising, pan frying and baking the little suckers.

Let It Be Sunday, 259!

Let It Be Sunday, 259!

Hello dear friends!  Happy Sunday!  Happy Mardi Gras!

We’re in full celebration this weekend. My house is full of friends and cakes.  There are beads everywhere. It’s hard to imagine a few years back when I didn’t celebrate like this every February.  This year’s Mardi Gras looks are mostly variations of lace gloves and cowboy boots – a mood.

I wish you well this fine day.  I hope there’s an extra bit of sparkle and celebration in your day.  Find it!

The offering this week is below.  As always, take only what you need.

Pull-Apart Biscuit King Cake

Pull-Apart Biscuit King Cake

Hello sweet friends!

This week marks the meat of Mardi Gras – the real good stuff. Parades every night. Long lunches that somehow turn into dinner. Parking strategies. Late night snack strategies.  Comfy sparkle shoes to walk from one side of town to the other. Friends that leave their houses open for long parade nights. Jambalaya in a crock pot. King cake truly everywhere we go.

Mardi Gras is a game of strategy to maximize the absolute best time.

Let It Be Sunday, 258!

Let It Be Sunday, 258!

Hello sweet friends.  It’s my pleasure to welcome you to another fine Sunday.

I’m actually coming to you from Saturday late-morning, what might be the last sunny day for a week. The sunshine coming through my window is begging me to get up and outside.

If felt like there was not enough coffee in the world and certainly not enough coffee in my body this week.  I found myself giving my veryownself actual pep-talks, aloud – all week.  We made it through and I dunno… I’ll empty the dishwasher by next Wednesday at the latest.

My obsession this week has been the above breakfast snacking plate (that I detail here on Instagram) and preparing my guest room and office for Mardi Gras guests this week.  There are few things more satisfying that making guest room snacks for friends – I love it!

The offering this week is below.

Shrimp Etouffee Risotto: a Valentine’s dinner

Shrimp Etouffee Risotto: a Valentine’s dinner

Hi friends do you know what this week is!? You do. I know you do.

It’s Valentine’s Day week.  Which… well it’s really just a day but I’m counting it as a week considering that’s how long I’ll have willed the romantic gesture of flowers into this home come Friday.  I don’t ask for much, I just ask that someone reads my mind (or my blog, I suppose) and enthusiastically bring me flowers this Friday.  Now I’m asking for enthusiasm in addition to flowers.
