Rosemary Potato Frittata with Diamond of California Nut Crust

Rosemary Potato Frittata with Diamond of California Nut Crust

Hello my friends!  We are well on our way into the cozy season – perhaps my favorite time of year – when my oven is always on and I roast or bake absolutely everything.

Every dinner is a combination of vegetables roasted on a sheet pan combined with eggs of some sort.  Do you eat eggs as enthusiastically for dinner as I do?  They’re a majority of my diet mostly because they’re always in my baker’s fridge and it’s such a comfort.

The most comforting combination of roasting vegetables and egg is, of course, a quiche – the food of truly any time of day!  Today we’re adding layers of thinly sliced potatoes and fresh rosemary and a bright apple and walnut topping.  Trust.

Let It Be Sunday, 245!

Let It Be Sunday, 245!

Hello friends!

Please excuse the tardy Sunday post two weekends in a row. This is my favorite post to settle on the couch to write on Saturday nights. The past two Saturday nights I’ve been out in the world celebrating this life, and that’s changed up our Sunday routine.  My apologies.  I’m here! We’re back. Thank you for you understanding.

It’s been a lovely week in both California and New Orleans.

Maple Pumpkin Black and White Cookies

Maple Pumpkin Black and White Cookies

It’s not that some cookies are better than others.  Every cookie is a dang-good cookie by nature of it being… a cookie.

There are good cookies and then there are BLACK AND WHITE COOKIES. The cookie that reigns supreme. The best cookie in all the world.  The cookie that wins the universe. The cookie that we all deserve.

Can you tell Black and White Cookies are my favorite? Are they your favorite, too?

Let It Be Sunday, 244!

Let It Be Sunday, 244!

Hello sweet friends. Let me be the first to welcome you to a fine Monday!

We’ve been super stormy down here with, in what was absolute NEWS TO ME, a tropical storm.  I truly don’t know how I didn’t know but maybe it has something to do with not having actual television channels and not paying attention to the weather this week beyond the weather app on my phone.  When it felt like the wind outside was going to lift my car off the ground… that’s when I started to pay attention.

Chicken and Pumpkin Dumplings

Chicken and Pumpkin Dumplings

I’m home from a week chasing the leaves and breaking in my knit hat in Maine.  I left New Orleans, sweating through a sweater and found myself in a red, orange, and yellow actual autumn wonderland up north.

Whenever I come home from a trip, which feels like a lot this year, I feel a big, open-hearted drive to nest and settle.  I water the houseplants… those poor things are troopers.  I usually hustle out the Instant Pot and make a batch of beans.  I jar the kombucha… or think about it.  I feed Tron because he’s surely yelling about snacks.  I re-up my kitchen altar.

Let It Be Sunday, 243!

Let It Be Sunday, 243!

Hello friends!

I hope today finds you slow and warm, feeling like you have more than you need. Luxury, right?

I’ve spent the week in the great state of Maine exploring Portland, Bethel, and Mt Desert Island. I’ve eaten so many of the best, most reasonably priced oysters. I’ve lazed around bookstores and hiked through forests and generally had a really lovely time during one of the busiest times of my year.

Let It Be Sunday, 242!

Let It Be Sunday, 242!

Hello my friends!

Welcome to another fine Sunday! So many of you threw your praise hands up for the article on the mental work of cooking last week – linked here if you missed it. RIGHT? We see each other.  That feels good.

Are you dressing up for Halloween?  I’m invited to a big New Orleans Halloween party and our love for costumes is pretty serious.  I was thinking of dressing as Carole Radziwill as Amelia Earhart.  Too Real Housewives niche?

Am I experimenting with Lizzo lyrics on cake?

Baked Beignets

Baked Beignets

I’ve lived in New Orleans long enough now that I have a jar of fry oil stored in my refrigerator for emergencies that require beignets.  Oh… some emergencies require beignets. I know that now.  I also have a respectable amount of powdered sugar in the pantry and a hurricane kit in the office so… I’m ready for whatever comes at me down here.

Having been here a handful of years, I feel safe enough to play around with the mighty beignet.  Seeing as not all of you have fry oil stored just for beignets I though… let’s bake these babies.  All the pillowy action you want from a beignet but baked, butter brushed, and piled high with powdered sugar.  These are a fast rise, fast bake – really the quickest way to beignet.

Let It Be Sunday, 241!

Let It Be Sunday, 241!

I’ve been thinking a lot about habits. Since I’ve had more than a just few days back home in New Orleans I’ve settled quite nicely back into the routine. Routine. It’s been both comforting and illuminating.  Like… there’s definitely parts of my morning routine that aren’t serving me (clicking onto Instagram within 30 seconds of opening my eyes) and I’m trying to be more conscious of how I spend my precious morning time.  This week I got up extra early to ride my bike to the Quarter to go to the old coffee shop I loved when I lived there.  It’s little things that are actually big, you know?

I have dear friends visiting town this weekend which means buttermilk biscuits for late breakfast and po-boys for all.

I hope this week finds you feeling steady and well.  The offering this week is below.

Baking Our Way To Fall

Baking Our Way To Fall

Hello my friends!

A few days ago on Instagram I posted a picture of me, at home in New Orleans, in a sweater, in full-on 90 degree weather.  I’m trying my best to will cozy, chilly weather upon us.  I’m not the only one.  So many of you responded that you’re doing the same: making chili, wearing sweaters, breaking in your new fall books with NO SIGN OF FALL IN SIGHT.  My friend Abby cautioned not to be cozy and get heat stoke at the same time, and honestly she makes an excellent point.

Still, we carry on – sweating in our sweaters.

It can’t be much longer.  And perhaps if we all start changing our wardrobe and baking with apples and root vegetables, the weather will cooperate.

Below is a collection of recipes I’ve made in years past.
