The Secrets To My Favorite Blueberry Cobbler

The Secrets To My Favorite Blueberry Cobbler

P

In a shock to no one, I have a lot of thoughts about the perfect summer cobbler.  Cobbler is a sweetened fruit base topped with a wet biscuit batter that bakes up to be something between a cake and a biscuit atop simmering fruit.  A cobbler is not a crisp (though this apple crisp really stands the test of time).  A cobbler is no time for oats – no time for streusel.

Easy Tomato Tarte Tatin

Easy Tomato Tarte Tatin

Hot girl summer? Check. Done. We’re hot.  You know what I’ve got my eye on for the coming months? BLT SUMMER. Sourdough bread, extra mayonnaise, seasoned fresh perfect sun-ripened tomatoes, bibb lettuce, and thick crisp bacon cooked with a tiny bit of brown sugar.  An absolute dream but that day isn’t here yet.  In these days before fresh tomatoes are at their peak, we can use the oven to coax their perfect sweetness onto our plate, paired with rich puff pastry because why not?

Let it Be Sunday, 372!

Let it Be Sunday, 372!

Greetings fellow weary friends. Are you tired? I’m tired. This current news cycle is… a lot. Plus, it has already hit 90º in Nashville and can I just say, no, thank you. My cat is out of sorts, there are two armadillos in my backyard (true story), and the community cat, aka Porch Cat, that I take care of has been hiding all week. Things are rough all over, you know? But here is what I have for us.

My Top 10 Peanut Butter Recipes

My Top 10 Peanut Butter Recipes

I haven’t felt like making meals at all this week.  I don’t even seem to have the energy to cobble together my usual lazy stand-bys: scrambled eggs and a carb, toasted.  Strangely, I’m also not allowing myself to order any expensive (and everything is expensive right now) takeout so… well, I’ll be eating bananas smeared with peanut butter for the foreseeable future.  I did manage to bake off a batch of  peanut butter cookies in a sweet tooth energized baking moment.

The Best Nonfiction Books for Summer 2022

The Best Nonfiction Books for Summer 2022

One of my cushiest jobs of all time was being a reader for the Hallmark Channel. Every week, I’d drive down the 101 to the Valley to pick up a stack of books to review. The stories came in waves depending on what themes the producers were interested in, ranging from autism to cancer, and—of course—Christmas. My barometer for whether a book should be made into a film was simple: if it made me cry, it made the cut.

Let It Sunday, 371!

Let It Sunday, 371!

Since it’s Mother’s Day, let me tell you one of my most treasured memories with my mom.

A few years back, in the spring of 2017 Mom and I flew to New York City so I could be on the actual Today Show promoting my last book Over Easy.   It was my first time on very live, very national television and to say that I was nervous was an understatement.  Mom and I walked from our midtown hotel up to Rockefeller Center and, because I was a monster I said, “Mom this is New York we have to walk and we have to walk fast,” and despite having knee surgery  (or pre-surgery knee pain, I can’t quite remember) she put her NYC walk ON and we made it up and back for rehearsal.

Oven-Baked Pea, Pancetta and Lemon Risotto

Oven-Baked Pea, Pancetta and Lemon Risotto

Rice is my preferred starch. Wait… does banana bread count as a starch?  If not I choose rice – it’s more versatile when it comes to dinner anyhow.  Today we’re taking the most elegant of Italian rice dishes and making it more of a one-pot-wonder than a labor of love.  There’s surely still love (read: panccetta and Parmesan) involved but we’re making this particular pot of rice comforting enough to enjoy on the couch with a big spoon like no one is watching.

How To Make Box Brownies Better

How To Make Box Brownies Better

I hope we’ve built enough trust between us for you to believe what I’m about to tell you. It’s a secret that professional bakers have been keeping from you for too long.  The truth is BOX BROWNIES ARE BETTER THAN BROWNIES MADE FROM SCRATCH.  I know… criminal, really but facts are facts.  I think it’s the oil – the straight up OIL that we add to a boxed brownie mix that makes for the most irresistibly fudgy meets chewy brownies.

Let It Be Sunday, 370!

Let It Be Sunday, 370!

Hello, friends!

I’ve been alone with the fact that I hadn’t ticked off all the tasks on last year’s Summer Bucket List. My guilt was assuaged by the fact that my Summer Bucket Lists are far more low stakes than the work to-do lists or the ever present endless list of house chores. Summer Buckets are meant to be aspirational, and sure a little challenging but my goodness – they’re supposed to be fun, and maybe even give me a little sunburn (a tell-tale sign of a good time in my book).

New Orleans By Way of Chicago

New Orleans By Way of Chicago

Have you ever been someplace your soul immediately responded to? That’s Chicago for me. Not everyone understands it and I genuinely like it that way. Chicago isn’t for everyone. It’s where my roots are, where my grandparents rest peacefully. The food in Chicago is the best in the world to me, and I will argue you down about it. It always seemed like my start and end would be there. Until I arrived in New Orleans.
