Let It Be Sunday, 363!

Let It Be Sunday, 363!

This week Drake, I mean, champagne papi reposted someone else’s content without giving them credit. Stars, they’re just like us! Am I going in hard on Drake? Yes. But is it keeping me from making a bunch of womblands jokes? Also yes. Hi, friends! Welcome back to me, Kim, Joy’s stupidest friend. This week I’m sharing lots of Light Links™? because life feels heavy right now and I want to give you a little brightness.

Dad’s Very Best Recipes

Dad’s Very Best Recipes

As a member of the Joy the Baker community since 2010, her dad, Mr. Wilson, has a steady presence here.  His Sweet Potato Pie recipe is a foundational pillar of this blog. I feel honored to give an outsider’s perspective on how wonderful he is. From what I have seen over the years, Mr. Wilson seems like a man who doesn’t need a lot of words to fill the space. You can talk, or not talk, and his demeanor is the same.

But what if we add banana?

But what if we add banana?

I must lose track of who I am at the grocery store. At the grocery store I’m a person who grabs a bunch of nearly ripe bananas and puts them in my cart with a pat on my own back.  And I’m a person who walks past that very bunch of bananas for a week until they’re far more spotted than yellow basically begging to become a last ditch smoothie.  I think I’m a person who eats bananas but I’m wrong every time.

Let It Be Sunday, 362!

Let It Be Sunday, 362!

Hello friends and welcome to our Sunday!

I hope there’s room for this picture of friendship joy as we all headed into the French Quarter last Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras is our greatest expression of joy and the sun was shining and it felt exactly like the community celebration we craved.  The rest of the week has been spent trying to gather my mind, cleaning my closet (my goodness), and nursing a bit of a cold.

Lemon Poppy Seed Old Fashioned Doughnuts

Lemon Poppy Seed Old Fashioned Doughnuts

Let’s talk about truly ICONIC baking combinations.  Chief among these iconic flavor marriages is chocolate and peanut butter which I love in everything from chocolate cake, to spoonfuls of peanut butter dipped into the chocolate chip bag. There is also browned sugar and banana, made even better if you set both on fire and serve them with vanilla ice cream.  And perhaps the most spring-like pairing: lemon poppy seed. Bright, nutty, and bound to make every brunch offering that much more fancy.

This Is My Favorite Egg Salad Sandwich

This Is My Favorite Egg Salad Sandwich

No one asked for my favorite egg salad recipe but I wouldn’t let a silly detail like that get in between you and ONLY THE VERY BEST EGG SALAD SITUATION. There’s something about these post-Mardi Gras, nearly spring days that make me feel like Easter and all the subsequent egg dying is in the air.  I’m skipping the dying and headed straight for the egg salad, friends. I mean… go ahead and start boiling your water now.

Happy Mardi Gras!

Happy Mardi Gras!

It’s Fat Tuesday, friends!

If you’re reading this, I’m literally dancing through the streets with the whole of New Orleans.  I wish you were here. You really should see this!

To bring a little Mardi Pardi to you day, here’s a New Orleans-inspired playlist. My hope is that the horns get you up and dancing with me from afar.

If you’ve lived here through Mardi Gras season and are away from New Orleans today – I’m sorry.

Let It Be Sunday, 361!

Let It Be Sunday, 361!

I don’t know friends. I just don’t even know.

What I do know is that I’ve been waking up at 4am worried about people half a world away. Horrified by the kinds of choices they’re having to make right now. I stress cleaned both bathrooms. I baked two loaves of bread for no reason. I brainstormed a few good recipes to bring you this March. I fell asleep in the middle of the day for two hours – I couldn’t even help it.

Chicken and Sausage Cajun Jambalaya

Chicken and Sausage Cajun Jambalaya

My Cajun French friend Sydney has given me a hard time for YEARS for making jambalaya the wrong way.  I mean… give a girl from California a few years to explore her own jambalaya journey. Since moving to New Orleans I’ve made my jambalaya recipe the Creole way, with tomatoes.  The result is a delicious rice dish with hints of paella and a firm reflection of the many different cultural influences in New Orleans.
