Rise and Shine, My Freaky Darlings!

Are you glad it's Friday? I'm glad it's Friday: this week has gone by on pig-fat-greased-rails, sliding perilously close to being out of control on at least three occasions. This morning, Nadia and I were in the living room, discussing the relative merits of continuing one's education beyond the second week of third grade, when we heard a Suspicious Noise Coming From The Kitchen. And so I went to investigate the rattle and hiss coming from the coffee maker, which had suddenly taken on a rath...

Tuesday Morning

Well, we have not quite completed the Et Cetera challenge yet, as Nadia came home convinced that what Et Cetera truly is is Cheeseburger Macaroni (which also happens to be one of her favorite things in the world - it is strange, the marvelous coincidences that fill our days) and so we had that, although my culinary heart is leaning in quite other directions.

Which was probably okay, though, as my day got more-than-slightly-derailed by the revelation that sometimes, your child will do something...

Monday Morning

Just general low-grade anxiety about EVERYTHING in these parts; I expect to be over it by mid-day. It's one of those, "What are you doing, company that I've used as a major example of how to do things right, doing things wrong, before the book is already on store shelves?" types of day.

Look what you fret about, you silly girl! For this to be your problem, you don't know what problems are. My conscience is apparently a stout Russian grand-mama today, wooden spoon in hand, red cloth on her hea...

The Et Cetera Challenge

"Do you know what I want for dinner, Mommy?" Nadia asked, with big blue eyes.

"What's that, sweetheart?"

"I want Et Cetera. Can we have Et Cetera today?"

"Not today, honey. Today we have to have chicken. But we can have Et Cetera tomorrow."

She beams. "Awesome! I wonder what Et Cetera tastes like."

"You don't know?"

She shook her head. "Nope. I only heard about it on Spongebob." She looks worried. "You do know how to make Et Cetera, don't you?"

"Of course I do."

So, ladies and gentleman, coo...

It's Friday!

Huzzah and Hallelujah! I think if ever I were to get two trained guard beasts (my first thought was mastiffs, and my second was peacocks, so take from that what you will) I would name them Huzzah and Hallelujah.

Or conversely, if I had two horses with which to pull wagons, I could name them Huzzah and Hallelujah. It really wouldn't matter where you were going: simply the travel would be a celebration.

We were recently told that the Amish buy horses from the racetrack - not all horses are winner...

Rise and Shine, Rise and Shine!

Three Books I Like To Read (Or At Least Think About) At This Time of Year:

1. The Crucible
2. Watership Down
3. The Witch of Blackbird Pond

In a way, these stories have all grown together in my mind, melding, Borg-like, into a tale of fearful exodus from the Puritanical and Assorted Peoples Who Are Jealous You Are Having More Sex Than They Are.

And if that story had a soundtrack, it would be a mash up of Set Up for a SCA Event and Klezmer Live!, interspersed with bits of violin-heavy music that l...

Rise and Shine, My Freaky Darlings!

Three things that made me smile this morning:

1. One of you has a coffee mug that says, and here I quote, "Fuck Decaf!"

2. There is apparently an iPad ap that helps people in NYC find a nearby bathroom. This ap is named Cloo. This is the type of pun that I will cherish forever, you know: whenever I am out and about and find myself in sudden need of a bathroom, I will long for (and probably ask aloud) for a Cloo.

Clooless: the state of not knowing where the bathroom is.

That's just a thing of be...

Happy Birthday to Me!

I am 39 years old today, which is 3*13, which pleases me to no end. And as is tradition at Chez CB, I'd like you all to give someone an unexpected and genuine compliment in honor of the day - there is no gift greater than hearing the work you do is valued and appreciated, or that you make someone's day brighter, or some such thing. I really like the idea of bunches of unexpected compliments floating around today. If you would, find someone in your day who maybe you don't normally talk to but ...

Monday Morning

The world is full of stones. Big ones, little ones. Gravel pebbles, boulders. We take up those we want, to build fences, walls, castles, keeps. We choose the bricks with which we build our realities. It is the process of selection that shapes the outcome; what do we elevate? What do we ignore? Which stone do we set in the keystone arch? Which do we send skittering sideways across a calm, cool lake? And which of those two do we count most dear?

Philosophy is not some grand thing. It's re...
