Monday Morning

And I have a headache magnificent in its complexity; I can not tell if my brain is failing me in great meaty chunks or it's just fixing to rain. This is an uncertainty I do not appreciate. Have you ever wanted to shave your head because the sheer mass of your hair is too much to bear? I woke up hostile and blood thirsty which is not in keeping with the happy happy sales bullshit I need to write this day.

Why do none of my clients ever need a campaign that says, "Buy this crap or we wi...

If I Went To Church, This Is What Church Would Be Like

Go here to watch Alice Walker discuss her latest book, The Cushion in the Road. It's long, about 45 minutes, but totally worth it, I think, if you are of a certain age and at a certain point in your life and self recognition: http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/Cush

My Favorite Philosopher

One time I shared a tale of woe and lamentation with a man who had plenty of sorrows of his own. And he listened well, with interest and compassion, and at the end he said, "Shit stinks. That's why it's shit. But you've got to keep on shoveling, or the barn will fill right up and then you won't have nothing."

We are engaged, my friends, in the battle between the promise born with every gangly brown-eyed calf and the never-ending production of shit.  People buy sh...

We Are Who We Are

I spent way too much time thinking last night about the books I'll write when I'm free to do what I want professionally. Work right now is actually a ton of fun, challenging as hell but going well, but my gosh, do I miss the creative writing, and there's just no me left when the paying work is done for the day.

Thursday Morning, Here We Go!

Priorities are funny things. It sounds like such a simple little word, such an easy concept. Priority: what comes first. But it is the identification and articulation of priorities that defines who we are. You don't need words for this, although many people use them, often and in quantity; it is by our actions that our priorities are known.

Sometimes this is complicated. Despite all our claims of social adeptness - verily, we're connected to each other 25 hours a day! - we are as a spe...

Here is a thing that is SOOOOO true for me

And probably also at the root of why I am a horrible advice giver, but that is another story for another time.

Researchers are beginning to poke at whether busier people are happier than people who are not busy: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-edge-choice/201305/serious-busyness

And I have to admit to this, 100%. When I have a ton of things to do I am happier than when I do nothing all day. And I'm easy: I don't even require my busy-ness to have Great and Profound Meaning. The a...

Here We Go Monday, Here We Go!

It is such a beautiful day today. The sun is shining; the leaves unfurling. Bright, vivid neon green, almost yellow, except where the trees are red. Where the trees are purple. The asparagus is here, growing tremendously every day. I had a handful for dinner last night, snapped off no thicker than the thought of asparagus should be; just broad enough to contain the essence of asparagus and nothing more, boiled a bit and a touch of butter and salt. It was like eating grass, if grass was awesom...

Heh.

Sometimes things you think will make you sad actually turn out not to.

The world, she is a funny place.

Seasons Change, And So Do I

I heard that line on the radio the other day, and it really struck me: the seasons change, and so do I.

Yet so much of life's energies are expended on maintaining the status quo. We don't like change. We like stability, surety. Knowing where our next meal is coming from is a good thing. Other people's expectations are powerful things. There's not a lot of room in the pigeon holes we get pushed into, but it is so much easier to stay in them than to keep busting out.

I have been i...

As a Gun Owner I Would Like To Say

No five year old needs a 22. For the love of everything, people. Guns are for grown ups. I'll even go so far as to extend grown up status to older teenagers in rural communities who hunt. But if you are too damn young for kindergarten, you are too damn young for a gun.

This was totally avoidable: http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/01/us/kentucky-accidential-shooting/index.html  There is no reason for shit like this to happen. Do not give guns to itty bitty kids. It is not a good idea, no matt...
