What Makes A Book LitRPG or GameLit?

One of the biggest questions I get is, “What makes a fantasy book a LitRPG book?” A close second is, “What’s the difference between LitRPG and GameLit?”

For me it’s all in the stats. GameLit is a broader category that encompasses anything that has to do with gaming and a fantasy world. LitRPG is a subset of GameLit that includes some level of statistics and leveling up a character or characters.

[image error]I write books that fall into both categories. The two Accidental Trilogies (Accidental Traveler and Accidental Champion) both are full-on LitRPG stories.

My most recent series is an urban fantasy that fits into the GameLit area. The Huntress Clan Saga has strong elements of Virtual Reality Gaming and that VR world has consequences in the real world for the main character, Quinn Faust. There are no stats or leveling but she does gain new abilities both in and out of the VR system.

Get ready, because Book 3 in the saga, Huntress Cadet, comes out on February 25th. Get caught up and read the others now.

Check out this new release, too!
[image error]Shipwrecked by fate. Hunted by moonlight. Hardened by battle.

Paul is an Aberrant, one of few able to enter a fantasy game world called Valheim. Kidnapped to a secret lab, he is forced into a government program that sends Aberrants to Valheim against their will. Most die within a day, but some have survived for months.

Mira, a famous gamer who recently went missing, is one such survivor. Finding her is Paul’s best shot at staying alive. But all his plans are dashed when he finds himself washed up on a tropical beach in the middle of the Wild.

With E-rank beasts roaming the jungle and an orc tribe on the hunt, Paul must recruit a party, level up, unlock abilities, and build defenses to hold off the savage raids against his camp. But each raid is stronger than the last, leaving only one option: attack the orc dungeon and kill the Blood Shaman who rules them.

Join Paul in the battle of a lifetime in the Blood Crown Series, A LitRPG adventure featuring party management, base building, army building, kingdom building, class development, and tactical combat.

Grab your copy today! It’s perfect for fans of Dean Henegar, Shemer Kuznit, and Dave Willmarth.

Is There A Book About You?

People often ask me where I come up with the stories that show up in my books. It’s not hard to answer. The answer is, it’s me! No, I’m not saying I’m a magic-wielding, video-game playing, paramedic to the supernatural. Although, wouldn’t that be awesome. What I mean is, I think there are stories going on around us all the time. Whether it’s watching the interaction of the people around me, taking a note from something happening in my own life, or even writing a story based on something my two dogs did, there are plenty of stories to write about. Sure, my stories have magic in them, but that doesn’t change how people interact or talk with each other. A good book and story always comes down to interesting characters with real world problems that need solving. Sometimes they use magic to solve the problems, but those problems are similar to the challenges you and I face every day. So what’s a story about you and your life going to be called? Reply back with a snappy title. Have a little fun. I can’t wait to read what you send me. In the meantime, enjoy the books and special offers below. The include a chance to win a free Ereader and find some great authors along the way.  Enjoy! P.S. – Get ready! The Charm Runner re-launches on Friday. Pre-order now to lock-in the lower price.  Unearthly RemainsA werewolf, a witch, and a vampire walk into a murder scene . . . Sgt. Marilyn Jaye of Supernatural Oversight (the investigative unit for all things which bump a bit too much in the night) is having a frustrating day. What should have been a simple case of a murdered ghoul has spun entirely out of control.

This humorous, cross-genre paranormal mystery/urban fantasy/paranormal romance will make you fall in love with all of London’s quirky supernatural residents.

On a Katherine Gilbert wackiness scale of 1-to-10 sarcastic talking cats*, this one is a 7.

A Reader Question Answered and More Free Books

One of your fellow readers asked me a question recently that I get quite often. I thought I’d answer it here, in addition to responding directly to her by email. Lori asked: “Did you enjoy writing one series over another one?” That’s a great question!

I think I become invested in each series as I write it. During the process of creation, each one becomes special to me in different ways.

For instance, the most recently released book series (starting with book 1 Cyber’s Change out now) will always be special to me because my youngest daughter inspired me to write it. I always enjoy revisiting my first series “Extreme Medical Services” and writing additional stories in it. It started my journey as a novelist. Those characters always seem to call out to me to come back and play with them some more. My two Fantasy GameLit Accidental Trilogies are special because I wrote them with my son. We worked side by side on the story and the characters and it remains one of my most popular series out there. So I guess my answer is — every book I write is special to me in one way or another. I think if that ever stops happening, I’ll hang up the laptop and find something else to do. Thanks for the question, Lori. I look forward to hearing from you again. For the rest of you, keep them coming. I love hearing from readers so send in your comments and tell me which series is special to you, whether I wrote it or another author did. Some Free Books (for a limited time)

The Writer’s Angst of Launching Books

Every time I have a new book come out, especially one I’ve put a lot of personal value into, I get more than a little anxious. I’m not gonna lie, I’m probably not a lot of fun to be around.  I know. I shouldn’t judge myself based on the success, or failure, of a book. I don’t have any control over what the reader response is going to be.  That is the crux of what it means to be a writer (or any other kind of artist). You invest yourself in a project, giving it your whole being as you become invested in the characters and what they mean to each other in the story, and to you outside it. Cyber’s Change is special to me for a lot of reasons I won’t go into again. If you want to understand why this project holds such importance, go back and read some of my previous posts here prior to this one [image error] Ultimately, the fate of Cyber’s Change about to be in your hands and the hands of other readers. It’s a little different from what I’ve written in the past. The biggest part of it is there’s no magic, just advanced technology of the near future (2055). HOWEVER, this series still contains strong female characters in tough situations dealing with a world that pushes back against them in many ways. In that sense, it’s very much like a lot of my books. You’ll have to tell me.  Cyber’s Change is available for $0.99 until the day it’s released. Now’s your last chance to get it at the pre-order price just before release day next Friday, April 5, 2019.  Read it, enjoy it, and let me know what you think in a review if you want. And thank you! Some Books by Friends

Violet must undertake the Test by Monster to become a bodyguard to the Emperor: a Fae Knight of the Seraphim. If she fails, her vampire and angel lovers will be tossed into the Abyss. At last, Violet meets her creator, and the dangerous truth is revealed…

Pick up Vampire God (book 5 in the Rebel Angels series).

[image error]A shifter caught on film. A cop with unwanted fame. Will she embrace her new identity, or become a monstrous beast?McKenna Largo loves police work and hates being in the spotlight. But when the California cop transforms into a cougar in the middle of a bank raid, she knows there’s no dodging the publicity. Now a viral video sensation, she’s the reluctant public face of a newly created race of shifters… As the police department uses her for “PR” and the governor plans a tourism campaign, slamming criminals behind bars seems a million miles away. Scared by her strange new impulses, Largo worries she’s a monster. But when criminals capture innocent young shifters, the cougar and the cop combined must leap into action …  Buy No Choice to shift into a thrilling urban fantasy today

Awesome Audiobooks At A Discount (Or Even FREE)

I was chatting with my friend JM Bannon about his latest project. He’s working on creating audiobooks for his groundbreaking Alchemists steampunk fantasy series. He describes them this way:

“The stories are set in an alternative universe very similar to ours, but magnificent steam-powered machines and magic exist. In this 19th century, three powerful Guilds vie for power behind the scenes,  our heroine and her eclectic group find themselves using their unique skills to solve thrilling mysteries.”

He’s even put together a kickstarter for the project with some pretty awesome perks and bonuses (including a custom musical soundtrack for the series). I jumped on right away to support it and told him I’d love to help out in spreading the word. He offered to do a special contest for the last week of the program and giveaway 5 free audiobook versions of my Accidental Thief Audiobook (a 15.99 value) to help feature my new audiobook store at Authors-Direct.com.

Here are the contest details to be eligible to win the free ebook from JM Bannon’s Kickstarter:

Everyone who pledges to JM Bannon’s Alchemists Audiobook Kickstarter project will get one entry in the drawing for every dollar pledged to the Kickstarter campaign.

Check out and support the Alchemists Audiobook Kickstarter Campaign here.

No purchase is necessary to enter. You can also share the audiobook store link on your social media channel like Twitter or Facebook and email JM a screenshot. For every time you share and email him until Sunday 3/10/19, you’ll get one entry in the contest.

Share this link to my Author’s Direct Store on social media and take a screenshot:

She was raised to fear them. But now she’s become her own worst enemy…

America, 2055. Cass is equal parts excited and nervous to leave her Sapiens Movement enclave. Stepping away from her technologically-conservative family for the first time, she sets off for college with dreams of saving humanity. But as the Sapiens girl falls for her cybernetically-enhanced roommate, her deeply programmed beliefs begin to glitch…

Confused in a world that no longer makes sense, Cass barely registers the horrific accident that leaves her near death. When she wakes up, she discovers the same technology she’s always hated is the only thing keeping her alive. No longer purely human, Cass questions everything she thought she knew about good and evil.

As tensions between man and machine head for a meltdown, Cass must choose a side before the conflict turns deadly…

Cyber’s Change is the first book in the heartfelt Sapiens Run cyberpunk trilogy. If you like strong female characters, dystopian futures, and exploring what it means to be human, then you’ll love Jamie Davis’s thought-provoking novel.
