Kat Healy and Hunter’s Curse on Podcast Episode 180

This is the Books and Authors Fantasy and Sci-Fi Podcast Episode 180 with author Kat Healy.

Welcome to the latest episode of the Books and Authors Fantasy and Sci-Fi Podcast! Co-hosted by Jamie Davis and Scott Walker, this podcast is exactly what the title says it is: a show focused on SF&F books and the authors creating them!

We’ll cover Epic Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery, and everything in between. Expect to find the best and brightest authors from all corners of the SF&F book world. Plus, we’ll add in a few other very special guests as well along the way.

Learn more about Jamie’s author updates and books at JamieDavisBooks.com.

Learn more about Scott’s writerly mischief at ScottIsWriting.com.

Our guest this week is Kat Lapatovich Healy. Kat’s a displaced Yankee living in the middle of the Midwest heartland. A biochemist-turned-aspiring author, she loves all fantasy, science fiction, basically anything with some sassy wit, cool tech, and action-movie heroics. You’ll find that in her work, along with characters struggling to connect with not only others, but themselves as well. When she’s not glued to her computer, she daydreams about when she’ll be able to go snorkeling again, bakes way too many pastries, and tries to grow things in her garden. She’s pretty bad at it, but she’s hopeful. The plants aren’t.

Kat is one of the twelve authors writing books in the Delta Underground Operatives shared world, and her upcoming novel, Hunter’s Curse, is the second book to launch in the DUO world. Buy/read her novel and learn more about the DUO project at the official DUO Facebook Page.

Happy Holidays with Freddy’s Holiday Monkey Bread!

Monkey BreadHey, happy holidays to everyone out there. It’s Jason, your friendly neighborhood Station U 911 radio dispatcher. I just came on shift and have been busy with a whole slew of calls.

Somebody just fell off their roof while decorating their house for Christmas. They’re a fairy and ended up breaking a wing in the fall after getting tangled in the string of lights on the way down. Whew, you’d think they’d have kept the wings out and ready in case something like that happened.

Anyway, Freddy, Station U’s famous zombie chef, just sent over a holiday treat for us to enjoy here at the dispatch center. Its a whole monkey bread loaf! He makes them for everyone this time of year and I couldn’t be happier. It’s still warm and the caramel sauce is all gooey. It’s awesome!

He left the recipe, too. Do you want me to share it with you?

Okay, here it is listed below. It’s easy to make and will be a crowd-pleaser for your holiday family and friends whether it’s Christmas, New Year, or whatever you celebrate this time of year.

Whatever you do, make sure you stay safe and remember to thank your local first responders this time of year. Emergencies don’t take a holiday.

Dean and the rest of the paramedics at Station U know that for sure. Here’s the link to a holiday story about last Christmas that you might want to read or listen to. It’s available as an ebook or audiobook. The awesome Roberto Scarlato narrates the story and it makes a fun family listen with Santa, elves, and holiday shenanigans.

Freddy’s Holiday Monkey Bread

Ingredients:

4 cans of refrigerator biscuits (regular or buttermilk)1/2 Cup Brown Sugar1/2 Cup Sugar1 Tablespoon Cinnamon

Sauce Ingredients:

3/4 Cup (1 1/2 sticks) Butter1/2 Cup Brown Sugar1/2 Cup Sugar

Directions:

Grease bundt or tube pan with butter or non-stick spray.Open biscuit cans and divide each biscuit into four pieces, gently rolled into balls. In a 1 gallon zipper plastic bag, combine 1/2 cup each of brown sugar and granulated sugar along with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. In batches, put biscuit dough pieces in the bag, seal, and shake to coat in sugar/cinnamon mixture.Remove coated dough balls and place in greased pan.Repeat until all dough balls are coated.Dump remaining sugar over top of dough balls in pan.In small saucepan, melt butter and sugar over medium heat.Cook until sugar is melted and the sauce has thickened.Pour hot sauce evenly over dough balls in pan.Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.Let cool for five minutes then carefully place large plate over pan and invert to turn out monkey bread.

Enjoy and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year from the entire Station U team and Author Jamie Davis!

Freddy’s Heartwarming Holiday Molasses Cookies

Freddy's Molasses Cookie ImageHi, it’s Jason your resident Elk City 911 Dispatcher. At the 911 call center, we had a visitor recently stop by. He dropped off some goodies for our upcoming Thanksgiving day on duty protecting the people of Elk City. It was Freddy, Station U’s very own 5-star zombie chef.

I was floored at his generosity. All he said to me was a thank you for sharing the stories of the great paramedics at Station U and backing them up with support over the radio. The cookies are delicious and I there were plenty for all those in the coming holiday shifts.

That’s what I like the most about the Unusual population, you know, the mythical creatures that inhabit our city alongside their human neighbors. Though most go through their days unseen and unknown to the humans around them, they still take the time to do good things for their community.

Freddy even gave us the recipe and said it was easy to make our own at home any time we want to. Here it is for you to use, too. Happy Thanksgiving from all the first responders in Elk City, especially the Station U team here at the call center and the excellent paramedics out in the field.

Heartwarming Molasses Spice Cookies

Ingredients:

3 sticks of room temperature butter (unsalted) (1 1/2 cups)1 cup packed light brown sugar (dark is fine, too)1 cup granulated sugar1/2 cup molasses (unsulphured)2 large room temperature eggs4 1/2 cups flour4 tsp baking soda1 Tbsp ground ginger2 tsp ground cinnamon1 tsp ground cloves1 tsp salt

Preparation:

Cream the butter, sugar, molasses until creamy and whipped (about 2 minutes).Sift together in a large bowl flour, baking soda, spices, and salt.Add dry ingredients to wet a little at a time until incorporated.(if you’re a zombie, check now for missing digits or other missing parts)Chill dough in refrigerator for at least 2 hoursPreheat oven to 350 degrees FRoll chilled dough into 1 inch ballsFill bowl with additional 1/2 cup of granulated sugarRoll balls in sugar until covered and place on parchment-lined baking sheetBake for 8-10 minutes until cookies show cracks on top. Don’t worry, it’s normal. They’ll crack more as they cool.Place baked cookies on rack to cool (or do what I do and eat some warm with cold milk)Seal cooled cookies in plastic container or zipper bag for later use

Plus we’ll add in a few other very special guests as well along the way.

Fun and Engaging Urban Fantasy Stories with Fiona Grey on the Books and Authors Podcast

This is the Books and Authors Fantasy Podcast Episode 177 with author Fiona Grey

Good day and welcome to this episode of the Books and Authors Fantasy and Sci-Fi Podcast. I’m your host, podcaster and author of Fun Fantasy Reads, Jamie Davis. This podcast is exactly what the title says it is, a show focused on everything in fantasy books.

This show will cover everything to do with fantasy books. From Epic Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Sword and Sorcery, and everything in between, expect to find the best and brightest authors from all the various corners of the fantasy book world. Plus we’ll add in a few other very special guests as well along the way.

To start off this week’s show, I am right in between projects and will be talking to a few potential collaborators over the next week about which project to start writing next. In the meantime, I’ll continue writing the brand new N’SPACE sci fi epic to be released on the new Kindle Vella platform coming out later this month. I’ll have more details on that soon.

You can check out more information on what I’m up to, including sneak peeks of upcoming covers, special giveaways, and more, by visiting my fan group on Facebook, Jamie’s Fun Fantasy Readers and over at my website and blog, JamieDavisBooks.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Let’s jump into this week’s guest, author Fiona Grey. Fiona lives in the Midwest with an amazing husband and Writing Cat. After years of technical writing and editing, her creative brain escaped into the wild, likely as a consequence of severe over-education.

She enjoys thinking nonlinearly and introversion. Other people claim this is “weird,” which is unsubstantiated. We talk about her series, “Professor Porter Paranormals” as well as her excellent related short story in the Summer Solstice Shenanigans anthology.

This is the Books and Authors Fantasy Podcast Episode 176 with Noah K. Sturdevant.

Kicking things off this week with my own author update, I’m almost finished with a new short story that I’ll be sharing with my newsletter and with a new group of urban fantasy readers from several authors. The story is a newish twist on the urban fantasy stories that I hope will resonate with my readers as well as others who love these kinds of books.

Shifting gears to this week’s guest, I’m excited to welcome Noah K. Sturdevant to the show. Noah is a man of mystery and intrigue. Granted, most of the secrets revolve around lost socks and conspiracy theories about otters. Word to the wise, don’t get him started on the otter thing unless you’ve got a free weekend.

Noah grew up in Southeast Kansas, but has lived in Asia for the last decade, bouncing from South Korea, to China, to Bangkok, Thailand, where he’s spent the last seven years.

Noah never really knows what’s going on, but attempts to have a good time anyway. He hopes you have as much fun reading his fantasy books as he does writing them.

Noah is also one of the excellent authors who are included in the just released Urban Fantasy short story anthology, Summer Solstice Shenanigans. You’ll definitely want to pick up this awesome urban fantasy collection.

Weaving Mythology and Storytelling into Modern Fantasy Stories with L.A. McGinnis on the Books and Authors Podcast

This is the Books and Authors Fantasy Podcast Episode 175 with L.A. McGinnis.

Good day and welcome to this episode of the Books and Authors Fantasy and Sci-Fi Podcast. I’m your host, podcaster and author of Fun Fantasy Reads, Jamie Davis. This podcast is exactly what the title says it is, a show focused on everything in fantasy books.

Plus we’ll add in a few other very special guests as well along the way.

Kicking things off this week with my own author update, I’m deep into a short story I’m writing set in a whole new series. It’s urban fantasy and features a fun twist I haven’t seen anywhere else out there. I don’t want to give too much away, but I’m working on the short story to see how I like the characters and the world in which they live before I commit to writing a full series about it.

Joining us on the show today we have author L.A. McGinnis. She spends her days writing steamy urban fantasies filled with brooding heroes and smart, bold heroines. A life-long fascination with mythology and storytelling inspired her to weave these contemporary tales of legendary fated mates set in gritty, urban settings like New York, Chicago and London.

She’s also one of the amazing authors in the just released Urban Fantasy short story anthology, Summer Solstice Shenanigans.

Exploring India’s Rich Mythology Through Fantasy with Sudha Kuruganti on the Books and Authors Podcast

This is the Books and Authors Fantasy Podcast Episode 174 with Sudha Kuruganti.

Let’s jump in with my writing update this week. I’m having a lot of fun writing the N’SPACE humorous sci-fi space opera serial. It has been making me chuckle to myself as I run the characters through their antics to solve their various challenges. It will be released exclusively to the Kindle Vella platform that will be launching later this summer. I’ll have more on that soon as well as how you can get access and read these fun stories.

Joining us today is author Sudha Kuruganti. Sudha writes fantasy inspired by Indian mythology. She loves books, anime, coffee, chocolate, manga, Beatles music, and dogs—not necessarily in that order.

Her work includes a clean paranormal romance series, the Elementals of India, and the Legend Valley Academy trilogy, a diverse fantasy tale of screwups and second chances, and finding your place in the world.

When she’s not writing, Sudha is usually nose deep in a book, experimenting with strange online recipes on her Air Force officer husband, or playing with their young son.

She’s also one of the amazing authors in the just released Urban Fantasy short story anthology, Summer Solstice Shenanigans..

I interviewed her all the way from India and there’s a little background noise in the recording but the interview itself is great so I hope you’ll enjoy my interview with Sudha coming up next.
