You never forget your first… (and a few special book deals)
I started writing fiction after a good friend dared me to write the first draft of a book in just 30 days. This was a challenge to join the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) contest held in November each year. I surprised myself by coming up with a story that had been rattling around in my head in one form or another for a few years.
You never forget your first…
That rough (oh, so rough) first draft was born from the annual November contest. I’ve entered NaNoWriMo every year since.
Almost a year later, after a good deal of editing and fixing, I published Extreme Medical Services for the world to see. At one point, it rose to #24 in the whole Amazon book store.
I’m super proud of it.
In honor of that first book, I decided to make sure you and anyone you know get access to all three of the first books in the series for 99¢ each. That’s three books for $2.97!
Extreme Medical Services, The Paramedic’s Angel, and The Paramedic’s Choice– 99¢ each.
Monsters, Paramedics, and Street Medicine.
New paramedic Dean Flynn is fresh out of the academy. When he gets assigned to the unknown backwater ambulance Station U, he wonders what he did wrong. Then Dean learns that his patients aren’t your normal 911 callers.
Dean and his partner Brynne Garvey serve the creatures of myth and legend living alongside their normal human neighbors in Elk City.
With patients that are vampires, werewolves, fairies and more, will Dean survive his first days on the new job? Will his patients?
Jump on the ambulance with Dean, Brynne and the rest of the team. Click to buy “Extreme Medical Services” now!

Planning the Next Wedding, A Cover Reveal, and More Discounted and Free Books
I have to start out this email by saying thank you for the overwhelming support from all of you after my last email.
Many replied to that message and it was great corresponding with you.
Since then, a lot has happened. My wife announced that she and my daughter are planning to go looking at wedding venues near the beach along
the Delaware and Maryland shore. I think she told me so I could plan my schedule to drive them, not because they actually want my input. (lol)
Most of you know our oldest just got married back in November so I wasn’t expecting to jump back in and plan another one so soon, especially
for our youngest, though she is certainly old enough. Still, we’re looking ahead to spring and summer 2020 and that is good news for all of you.
I guess I need to get on with writing more books to pay my share of the festivities.
Things are moving along with Cyber’s Change and the audiobook production. The narrator will be the excellent Sarah Grant. I can’t wait to hear her read the book.
I figured you’d want to check out the cover. It’s totally awesome and one of the best my designer, Christian Bentulan, has ever done for me.
Here it is. It’s available at a special pre-order price for just 99¢.
Cass Armstrong is excited to go away to college and see the world outside the Sapiens tech-conservative enclave where she was raised. The Sapiens party members consider artificial intelligence and cyber-enhanced people huge dangers to the human race during the mid 21st century.
Then Cass meets Shelby and nothing is ever going to be the same. After a rocky start, she learns cyber-humans are people, too, as she enters a relationship with her new roommate.
Cass is forced to face what it means to be human in a world where cybernetic enhancements start to become more common and radical conservative terrorists try to force them back underground.

“I gave up my eyes to see more clearly.”
Harvard professor Jeremiah Hunt’s life fell apart in the wake of his daughter’s disappearance. His obsessive search for her cost him his wife, his job, and his reputation. And now, thanks to a Faustian bargain he makes with the empty-eyed and enigmatic Preacher, it takes his sight as well. In return, he’s granted the gift of “seeing the unseen,” letting him see what others cannot; ghosts and other supernatural creatures of the night.
With the help of his ghostly companions – Whisper and Scream – he embarks on a new career banishing malevolent spirits that torment the living while continuing his search for clues to Elizabeth’s fate. What begins as a search for his daughter turns deadly when a particularly cunning foe lays a trap that ends with Hunt accused of a series of brutal murders. Now Hunt must fight not only to save his daughter’s life but his own as well, against a dark and ageless foe that would use a father’s love to set itself free.

Character Diversity and What it Means to Me
[image error]I’m working on a new series that, while fun to write and action-packed, deals with some tough issues on what it means to be a person or be human.
It all sprang from a request from one of my daughters to make my books more inclusive of diverse characters, and to make the stories, not about that diversity, but to just write stories with a variety of character genders, orientations, and orientations more representative of society as a whole.
Initially, I was perplexed and a little embarrassed.
As an author, I like to write what I know. As a middle-aged white guy, it’s easy to write a story about a white, male hero. It’s easy to write a story about a white young adult female hero, too. After all, I was Mr. Mom raising two daughters to adulthood with my wife for almost 20 years.
I worried that if I wrote about main characters from other ethnic or demographically diverse groups, it would come off as disingenuous or fake. Was I right?
Maybe that initial worry was nothing but a cop-out. Maybe I was trying to make an excuse instead of finding a way to get it done.
Writing Stories with Character Diversity
I decided to dig in and write a story about two characters who happened to be gay, without making sexual orientation significant to the macro-plot. The overall story would, instead, challenge some basic assumptions we all deal with every day. The story’s actions would focus on the larger issues facing the main characters beyond their relationship with each other.
Enter the Sapiens Run trilogy, a story about two female college students dealing with extremism in society and confronting their own preconceived notions about right and wrong in the futuristic world around them. I just finished Book 1 – “Cyber’s Change” and I’m super happy with how it turned out.
I ran it past my daughter and her fiancé. They both thought the relationship between the two main characters rang true (and they liked the rest of the story, too).
Now it’s up to the readers at large to tell me whether the plot is as good. Cyber’s Change comes out in every ebook and audiobook store on April 5th. (It’s out for pre-order now in most places if you want to lock in the 99¢ price. I’ll share the link next week once the pre-order’s up on all the stores.)

Readers Said They Wanted More! I Listened…
[image error]Somebody said to me they wanted more.
“More what?” I asked.
“More about what you’re working on.”
“Oh, I guess I can do that.”
That is about how that conversation went and I agree, I could do more to communicate with all the awesome readers out there. Because of that, I’ve kicked off a Facebook Fan Page that will allow me to do some regular Facebook Live videos.
You don’t have to catch them live. They’ll be available for replay after the fact, too.
In these videos, I’ll provide a brief update of what I’m working on and in some of them, I’ll read a selected scene from a project on which I’m working. Sound good to you?
If you want me to do this leave a comment below and let me know what you’d like me to do.
Here are some great book suggestions while you wait for my next release from the Delivery Mage series.
Learn to fight. Pass my trials. Stay alive.
As long as I can keep my supernatural origins hidden, my life is simple. It’s just my best friend and me against the world, eating dried Ramen and peas, watching reality TV, and laying low in the city that never sleeps.
That is until Draven, a dangerously attractive hunter, tracks me down and kidnaps me. He’s with the Obsidian Order, and he gives me a choice: join their ranks or die. All I have to do is pass a series of deadly trials, competing against a bunch of supernaturals who want me dead. Sounds easy, right?
There’s one problem with that; I have no memories of my past, which means I don’t have the skills to compete. Now, I have to learn magic—fast—because I’ve been promised my best friend will die if I fail, and if we both die, the secret we’re carrying could fall into the wrong hands.
After a childhood filled with demons and her devil-worshiping parents, Lydia longs for a quiet, normal life, a safe haven somewhere blissfully dull.
Being the manager at the Roanoke Apartments seems to fit that bill. But Lydia soon learns that you can’t leave the past behind so easily.
She finds herself faced with unclogging drains for werewolves, conducting nightly vampire counseling sessions, and caring for two talkative cats.
Then there’s the distraction of Geoffrey, the hottest, and most angelic, boss anyone ever dreamed of. As if that isn’t enough, the demon who nearly killed her shows up to finish the job.
So much for a peaceful, simple life…
Thanks to her offbeat mother, Shade’s full name is Galactic Shade Griffin. Having a name like that while being the new girl in school is pretty much catnip for bullies.
The summer before Shade’s junior year of high school, her mother breaks up with yet another boyfriend and moves them once again to a new town.
This time, they move into a dilapidated old house where Shade has an entire attic bedroom to herself—at least until she discovers it’s haunted by the ghost of a teenaged boy named Brandon Yates.
When Shade’s best friend goes missing, her life becomes even more complicated. With the help of Brandon who’s struggling with his own issues in the world beyond, Shade faces the question of whether or not she has what it takes to become a true hero.

My wife got some beach time, though while I was in chatting books with my author pals.
Now that I’ve recovered from the 30-hour trip back home, I’m ready to make 2019 a kick-ass year for new books and other projects from me. I’m going to be releasing the fifth and final (for now) book of the Delivery Mage series. “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” will be out soon so keep your eyes open.
I’m also working on a new project set in a near-future, dystopian America dealing with cybernetics, implants, and what it means to be human. Stay tuned for that trilogy later this spring.
I’ll check back in with more from that series and maybe even do a Facebook live reading and chat with some of you in a few weeks. Would that be something you’d like me to do? Reply to this email and let me know.

A New Year and a Huge Selection of New Series to Check Out – Free!
The year of 2019 looks like it’s going to be a break out year for me and my family. My son got married in late 2018 and my daughter got engaged over the Christmas Holidays. There’s a lot to look forward to in the coming year.
On the author side of things: I have several new series to kick off, some important additions to the previous series I’ve written, and even some adjustments to existing series about which I’m really excited.
There will also be new collaborations with some awesome fantasy and sci-fi authors, too, so keep an eye out for them.

My Furry Writing Companion and Positive Writing Habits
I don’t have anything as exciting as an Arctic Dog, but I do have a furry writing companion. Peggy, our 2 1/2-year-old miniature Schnauzer has been happy to curl up between my extended legs when I sit in my recliner. She’s done this while I write since we first got her as a puppy.
She provides me a warm bit of positive feedback to encourage me in my writing habits. Not all habits are bad and an author who has awesome readers like you needs a regular daily writing habit. It’s important to keep the books and the creative juices flowing.
If you want to catch a look at a picture of Peggy taken while I write, click the link here:
New Book On the Way
I have a new book coming out next week on Friday. It’s the culmination of the Accidental Champion saga. I’ll send you an email about it next weekend to let you know when it’s available.
In the meantime, another buddy is releasing their latest book, Demons and Deception. It’s an urban fantasy novel kicking off a new series – Magic Blood: The Warlock. It’s available for 99¢ for a limited time.
Check it out on Amazon, here.
Here’s the book’s description:
[image error]I’m a mage. Problem is, it might kill me.
In another life, I was an investigator, a hunter, and a problem solver. It was great. Until it wasn’t. When tragedy struck, I gave up my entire life and got as far away from my problems as I could.
Now I’m in London, working at a university library, stacking books and keeping my head down. It’s the normal life I wanted, until Levi shows up. He’s wants a book in my library, and no way in hell am I going to give it to him. There’s something special about this book. Maybe even dangerous. And it’s my job to protect it.
But now I’m stuck with this sexy, smart-mouthed Mage who won’t leave me alone. Worse, he’s isn’t the only person who wants the book. All of a sudden, this new life I’ve built for myself gets a whole lot more dangerous.
If I want to survive, I need to figure out what the hell is going on. And I think that the only way out, is through.
Teaming up with Tansey Morgan, author of the hit series “The Last Serpent”, Katerina Martinez is back doing what she does best; writing gripping, action-packed urban fantasy you won’t want to put down. If you like snark, danger, action, and romance with a bit of bite, this book is for you!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G6VBZ6H
I hope you enjoy it! I’m back to my writing. Look for my email on the new release next week!
Take care and stay safe!
