Driving Long Distances and Pondering Storylines
I’ve been doing a lot of traveling by car recently. I have put over 3,000 miles on the car over the thirty days on either side of this blog post. While this travel time has put a crimp in my writing schedule (when home, I try to write 2,500 words or about one chapter a day), I have put the time driving to good use.
It’s true I didn’t hit my writing targets during the recent trips, only hitting about 600 words a day on average. Still, the time was not wasted. Spending six to eight hours behind the wheel on the interstate give your brain plenty of time to ponder lots of things. I spent much of the time working and re-working story lines in my mind for Dean, Brynne, Ashley and James in the Extreme Medical Services world.
This means, now that I’m back home for a bit, that I’m only about ten full writing days from finishing the first draft of the second novel in the series, tentatively titled “Paramedic’s Folly.” This is good news for fans because it puts me on target to release this novel by the end of the year. It also allows me to spend some time, soon, to revisit my first draft of the Brynne and James origin story prequel novella.
I don’t think I’ll get the prequel published by mid-October, as I had originally thought. But I plan on releasing a working draft, for free, to the newsletter members who I call the “first 100 readers!” The prequel novella, about 30,000 words or half of a full-length novel, is now slated to be published online to eBooks everywhere by the beginning of November.
Thanks for being loyal fans and continue to put up your reviews of the Extreme Medical Services novel online at places like Amazon and Goodreads. These reviews help other potential readers find the book and decide to buy it!

Paramedic Stories About Mythical Creatures
One of the challenges when writing a series like this one is keeping the content fresh and interesting while telling the story. In this case, there is the overarching coming-of-age storyline of new paramedic Dean Flynn and his mentor and supervising paramedic Brynne Garvey. But inside each book there are the everyday emergency medical services (EMS) calls the paramedic stories that make up an average paramedic’s day.
Writing Realistic Paramedic Stories
I have striven, starting with the first book, Extreme Medical Services, to write these stories as realistically as possible. You might ask how I can make stories about mythical and legendary creatures realistic? The realism is the day to day life of the paramedic. The paramedic stories in the books ring true. No matter who our patients might be, we get called and we respond. Some patients have true emergencies and others have rather mundane medical problems that don’t need more than reassurance. This is the life of the EMS provider, the EMT and paramedic.
If this intrigues you then get set for the ride of your life as the Extreme Medical Services series kicks off with book one. I am solidly in the middle of the second book with plans to release it before the end of 2015. So jump in and enjoy this book and start down a path with Dean, Brynne and the rest of the Station U paramedics and characters as they treat their very special patients

I hope you’ll not only enjoy reading the book but also come back, click the link where you bought it and leave an honest review. I read the reviews and the ones with constructive criticism are taken very seriously. I take the reader’s comments and work to improve my writing and storytelling about paramedic stories. I thank you in advance for taking the time to review and comment!

Paramedics, Werewolves, and Vampires, Oh My!
Barnes & Noble Nook eBook Link
Coming soon – Amazon physical book link.
I pondered on whether to just put that headline out there and leave it at that. For those of you who’ve read the first seven chapters, your support and patience has been amazing. It’s been like a running the final yards in for a touchdown with the stadium screaming around me.
For those of you who rush through the book and wonder, “Well, heck Jamie, what happens next?” Don’t worry. I’m on it. I’m about a third of the way through the sequel which I intend to be done in time for Christmas. You’ll be able to pick up on the escapades and adventures of Dean, Brynne, Gibbie and all the rest of the characters you met in the first book and fell in love with.
Prequel Novella Draft Finished
In other Extreme Medical Services news, I’m finished the first draft of the short novella prequel about how Brynne the paramedic and James the vampire get together. I have to let it sit for a few weeks to give my brain a holiday from it, but then I’ll be back at it and still plan to have that to release in mid-October as planned.
Thanks again to all for your early support on this project. I’m charging straight ahead and you can expect more to come here on the site as I get news to share with you. (and maybe some sample chapters)

In Paramedic Books, Life is Truly Stranger Than Fiction
I was chatting online with a Facebook friend recently about the book coming out and he said that he was really enjoying the Extreme Medical Services 7 chapter preview so far. He also said that it was funny how much the emergency medical services encounters the paramedics in the book run into resembled “real life ambulance calls.” My friend is a paramedic, too, like me. I told him that life was stranger than fiction, even in paramedic books with vampire’s who need ambulances.
Realistic Paramedic Books
The truth is that any resemblance to real life patients is accidental but that the resemblance to real paramedic drama is intentional. I’ve been looking at a lot of paramedic books lately in the Amazon Books and Amazon Kindle stores. Most of the paramedic books and stories represented there are strict romances with a little medical story line thrown in for context. I’ve got a different take on this for the book coming out soon. There’s a little hint of romance (to be expanded upon in future volumes) and a lot of good, realistic paramedic drama. I wanted to give you a series of paramedic books that have a realism to the ambulance calls and some basis in real anatomy and physiology.
How can I do that and still maintain the paranormal nature of the Extreme Medical Services patients? Part of it is that the patients in these paramedic books are all basically human, just different in some way. This also happens to be true for a real paramedic’s patients. Every single one is an individual. Every single one has a real life problem they think is an emergency. And, every single one deserves to get good, high-quality medical care for their problem from a caring health care professional. That’s what these paramedic books are really about, underneath it all.
Book Release Update
I’m told by the editor for Extreme Medical Services book 1 that she is almost finished the final edit and will be sending the book back to me in the next few days. That’s just in time for a final polish by me and then the proofreader (my wife). The plan is to get the book up and published with a soft launch so that all of you can get dibs on the early bird pricing of $2.99 for the Kindle/iBooks/Kobo eBook version. It’ll stay that way for just a week or so before going up to full price at $4.99.
Hopefully, you’ll all enjoy the discount and finishing the book so much that you’ll leave an honest review of the book on your preferred bookseller’s site. These reviews are important to help the book rise up in the standings on the lists. It also helps other readers like you to find the book and download it, so please leave a review when the time comes.
Stay tuned here for more updates soon. I’ll have them out for you both here and on the Extreme Medical Services paramedic books preferred reader email list here. If you’re not on that list to get freebies and book updates, you should be! Talk to you again soon!

Extreme Medical Services Prequel Story In The Works
One of the hardest parts of working on a project like this (at least for me) is choosing a cover for the book from the submissions I get. I ran a contest over at 99Designs.com for the book cover and got over one hundred submissions from nearly 50 graphic designers. Some were awful, but there were some truly amazing cover ideas, almost too many from which to choose.
One thing I was surprised about was that some of the covers gave me ideas for future story ideas in the Extreme Medical Services world. For example, how did paramedic Brynne Garvey and her eventual boyfriend and vampire overlord of Elk City meet? Enter the short project (novella) I’m working on now while the final polish gets added to “Extreme Medical Services.”
If you’re not yet on the email list for this blog and getting updates on the books to be released for Extreme Medical Services, sign up now. I’m giving the Novella away to all the email list members for free as soon as it’s done. My goal is to have it out by mid-October. It’s just another thank you ahead of time for supporting this project and enjoying the characters in the chapters you’ve read so far.
Tentatively titled “The Paramedic and the Vampire,” the new novella tells the story of how the two of them meet and also gives a lot of the background into how the Extreme Medical Services teams were first organized. The ExMS teams later evolved into the dedicated ambulance crews that young paramedic Dean Flynn joins right out of the academy in the novel coming out in just a few weeks.
So don’t miss your chance to get this new novella to be made available to you for free just for being a supporter. Join the email list and be ready for the release of “Extreme Medical Services” and ready for your free gift!

Dean Gets an Extreme Paranormal Love Interest
I often bounce ideas for my novels off of my wife. She’s an avid reader of many fiction genres. One of the first things she said when she read the initial draft of Extreme Medical Services was “Dean needs a paranormal love interest.” I groaned because I’m not that comfortable with the romance side of things in creative writing.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a pretty romantic guy. I’ve been married for 25 years, and I count myself as a successful husband if I do say so myself. So I knew that she was ultimately right. If I wanted Dean to be real, if I wanted Dean to grow as a character that you, the readers, cared about, I had to create a romantic paranormal love interest for him in the story.
For those of you who are on the early access reader’s list, you might have figured out who that person is based on the events I went back and wove into the storyline. If you like it, don’t worry. There’ll be more to come and develop here in books two and three in the series.
The next big question is, what kind of Unusual is she. She has to be a member of the Unusual community. That’s just fiction 101. So my next task is to create a believable character that has some deep ties to the Unusual community. Stay tuned to upcoming blog posts and, of course, future books in the series to learn more.
In the meantime, what do you think of the early chapters of the book “Extreme Medical Services?” You can read the first third of the book (seven full chapters plus the prologue) by signing up for my author’s newsletter here. It’s free, and you can choose between the Kindle Mobi format or the epub format that everyone else uses.
Check it out and share you thoughts on the story so far by leaving a comment below. I always look forward to hearing back from you.

Extreme Medical Services Book 2 Outline Already In Progress
For those of you who can’t wait for the release of “Extreme Medical Services” book, the editing process is almost completed. The book cover is also finalized. I’m not stopping there, however. I’ve already started outlining book two and have ideas in place for book three in the paranormal EMS series.
ExMS paramedics Dean Flynn and Brynne Garvey are still on the job, caring for the patients who lurk on the fringes of humanity. We’ll have more creatures, more unique situations paralleling real-life EMS experiences, and more intrigue as Dean continues his conflicted journey to figure out where he fits in all of this craziness.
You can help out the process. One thing my editor pointed out to me during the re-working of “Extreme Medical Services” (coming soon) is that I need serious help with my naming conventions. So you can help me out. Leave a comment in the comments field below this post or tweet me @podmedic with a first and last name for a character in the second and third book. You can even suggest a type of paranormal creature for the name. Make sure you leave the hashtag #ExMS on twitter.

Extreme Medical Services Book Cover Finalized
After a run with over 20 different designers at 99designs.com the final cover for the novel “Extreme Medical Services” has been chosen. It was a close race between the finalists but the simplicity of the winning design and it’s ability to “grab the eye” in a smaller format (like on Amazon) is what pulled it through. Here’s the winning design:
Some of you may notice that I changed the tag line for the novel. In the original contest entries it was “Medical Care On The Fringes Of Society.” I didn’t think that was quite right and after some discussion with my very able editor, Sam Bradley, we changed it to the one in the cover above, “Medical Care On The Fringes Of Humanity.”
Leave a comment below and let me know what you think!
Extreme Medical Services Publishing Update
I’ve also heard from several of you regarding when the book is going to be released. The book is at the line editor now getting some final polish and review for typos and simple grammatical errors. This is to catch things I missed in the structural rewrite. I’m integrating the editing advice into the chapters as they are completed once Sam sends them back to me. The goal is to get that process completed by mid-August.
What that mid-August editing deadline means is that the book could (should) be available for pre-orders on Amazon by September 1 with a release of the book to coincide with the upcoming EMS World Expo conference in Las Vegas in mid-September. The plan is to have a limited number of copies of the book for sale/signing in the Physio-Control Podcast Studio there. Our booth number is #229 so look for us there if you’ll be in attendance.
Don’t forget to sign up for the Email group and I’ll send you updates on the status of the book each week until it’s released! Just fill out the form here and get the first seven chapters for free!
