Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

Unlike fossil fuels,1 child per fertile woman & 10 trees aforested per child can be done with true equity, worldwide.  The argument is very heated about who should bear the costs of converting the world into a fossil fuel free economy. However, the even more important goal of one child per fertile woman will not be costly in monetary terms and families will be absolutely equal with one child, no matter where they are located.

Aforestation refers to to the practice of planting trees in locations that were not formerly forested or that have been converted to human use.  Reforestation refers to the practice of replanting zones of forest harvest. Deforestation refers to the widespread practice of removing forest cover for alternative human uses.

Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

Canadians, can we work with nature to turn our country into a gigantic, healthful  carbon sink?  Picture This picture, taken at the end of winter, does not appear to be especially healthy. However,  peat bogs, worldwide, are one of the best ways we have to actually sequester carbon instead of returning the carbon of dying vegetation to the atmosphere. The high level of water in these bogs means that decaying vegetation falls below a layer of water and is gradually absorbed in the growing mass of peat as a very long-term carbon sink.

Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

Canadians concerned about the environment – work with passion to deny the Great Denier, Stephen Harper, another term as Prime Minister.   The tenure of the Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has been a catastrophe for his country in many respects. However, on the environmental front Canadians owe it to the entire world to ensure that he has no chance to inflict further damage.

Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

Can we turn our cities into carbon sinks by rebuilding them with wood? http://goo.gl/gYHQaO Picture This is an interesting question. On the one hand, if New York were built largely of wood rather than of steel and concrete, it would permanently sequester as much as half a trillion  metric tons of carbon. However, the buts one suspects would fill an encyclopedia starting with, "But were would we get all that wood?" For the moment, the idea should symbolize the magnitude of the undertakings that will be needed in the near future in order to pass through the bottleneck of the 21st century.

Plant trees, not windmills. Picture Thank you for coming here. This is an ambiguous and troublesome aphorism. On the one hand, windmills are one of the most important parts of the absolutely indispensable attempt to free ourselves from the carbon economy. On the other, they can stand as a symbol for our hubristic faith in our own invasive technology as a solution to all our problems.

This picture, with its forested ridge and windmills planted in the foreground is very suggestive. And what is that little boy doing with that great big piece of pink plastic? Is it a sign of advancing industrial technology somewhere in Africa? Will it be powered by wind?
