Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015
We should remember that the population explosion of homo sapiens is the root cause of global warming.
These pictures were all taken around the same time when the global population explosion really began to take off. Picture one shows early crowding. The last three depict the destruction of various of the natural carbon sinks in the interests of human pursuits: prairie, forest, peat bog.

Unlike fossil fuels,1 child per fertile woman & 10 trees aforested per child can be done with true equity, worldwide. The argument is very heated about who should bear the costs of converting the world into a fossil fuel free economy. However, the even more important goal of one child per fertile woman will not be costly in monetary terms and families will be absolutely equal with one child, no matter where they are located.
Aforestation refers to to the practice of planting trees in locations that were not formerly forested or that have been converted to human use. Reforestation refers to the practice of replanting zones of forest harvest. Deforestation refers to the widespread practice of removing forest cover for alternative human uses.

Canadians, can we work with nature to turn our country into a gigantic, healthful carbon sink?
This picture, taken at the end of winter, does not appear to be especially healthy. However, peat bogs, worldwide, are one of the best ways we have to actually sequester carbon instead of returning the carbon of dying vegetation to the atmosphere. The high level of water in these bogs means that decaying vegetation falls below a layer of water and is gradually absorbed in the growing mass of peat as a very long-term carbon sink.

Canadians concerned about the environment – work with passion to deny the Great Denier, Stephen Harper, another term as Prime Minister. The tenure of the Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has been a catastrophe for his country in many respects. However, on the environmental front Canadians owe it to the entire world to ensure that he has no chance to inflict further damage.

Can we turn our cities into carbon sinks by rebuilding them with wood?
http://goo.gl/gYHQaO
This is an interesting question. On the one hand, if New York were built largely of wood rather than of steel and concrete, it would permanently sequester as much as half a trillion metric tons of carbon. However, the buts one suspects would fill an encyclopedia starting with, "But were would we get all that wood?" For the moment, the idea should symbolize the magnitude of the undertakings that will be needed in the near future in order to pass through the bottleneck of the 21st century.

Should we be frightened that the northern boreal forests are burning so fiercely?
http://goo.gl/ZdaE8O
Yes!
These pictures of damage to the northern boreal forests, ending with a red sunset caused by soot from forest fires, offer some idea of the severity of the degredation these forests are suffering around the world. What is the long term consequence? The carbon stored in the defoliated trees in the second picture will likely be permanently sequestered in a peat bog. That is a very good thing. On the other hand the carbon shown as stored in the first picture will almost certainly find its way directly into the atmosphere as is happening in the two pictures of forests fires. There is now so much soot in the air from this year's forest fires that we should accustom ourselves to the red sunsets caused by the soot in the air.

Sustainable green growth or sustaining green restoration? You take your pick
It is hard to fault wind farms as a part of the energy future, yet they are really aimed at enabling all of us to do more of the same as represented by the second picture. We need to urgently consider restoring and preserving the natural carbon sinks so some of us can enjoy the outdoors in a simpler fashion.
There will be no escaping wind farms in the near future, but if they are seen as a part of a sufficient green future, they and we are doomed to fail. Our priority must be restoration; windmills may buy us time.

Plant trees, not windmills.
Thank you for coming here. This is an ambiguous and troublesome aphorism. On the one hand, windmills are one of the most important parts of the absolutely indispensable attempt to free ourselves from the carbon economy. On the other, they can stand as a symbol for our hubristic faith in our own invasive technology as a solution to all our problems.
This picture, with its forested ridge and windmills planted in the foreground is very suggestive. And what is that little boy doing with that great big piece of pink plastic? Is it a sign of advancing industrial technology somewhere in Africa? Will it be powered by wind?
