TONIGHT in LA: Baby Alpaca at Hotel Cafe
“We wrote ‘Sea of Dreams’ after a sunrise swim on Whidbey Island, freezing and super-beautiful. I swam out really far and saw two sea lion heads bobbing in the water. The instrumentation has that flat calm of morning water,” he explains. “I like how the guitar lightly chugs along like the ripples small waves make. And the vocals, being calm and easily sung, represent that feeling, the feeling of walking on the shore when the sun is rising.” - Chris Kittrell tells Vogue.com

When trying to identify the music made by NYC band Baby Alpaca, it’s perhaps easier to try and figure out what the music is NOT. Judging by the music on the band’s first proper EP, which is released today via Atlas Chair Records , it’s easy to say that this is definitely not your standard indie rock fare: an autoharp is involved, as well as both live and programmed beats and a smattering of guitars. The music eschews any musical tropes typically assigned to wispy bedroom electronica, beardy folk music, or the new wave of alternative R&B, but it could perhaps exist as a distant cousin to all of those things. Buoyed aloft by the winsome vocals of front man Chris Kittrell and shaped by the guitar styling of Zach McMillan, Baby Alpaca make music that is both romantic, vaguely tropical, and sufficiently futuristic—music that seems born of a million dramatic road trips that might provide a suitable soundtrack for a million more. Let's get wild child...
The four songs on the Baby Alpaca EP make for a striking, remarkably blissed-out statement of intent. The EP’s first single, “Sea of Dreams”(whose Dada-esque video premiered earlier this year via NPR) is as fitting an introduction as any band could hope to have: all echo-chamber vocals that seem to be haunted by reverby guitar lines and gently-played piano notes that drift through the song like ghosts. Tracks like “Wild Child” and “On The Roam”evoke a palpable sense of modern restlessness, something that permeates all of Baby Alpaca’s music. It’s a feeling that Kittrell attributes to his own meandering youth—a time spent experimenting, studying, travelling, and trying to locate his own creative voice.
The gentle, humane quality of Baby Alpaca’s music is deeply indebted to Cincinnati-native Kittrell’s adventurous youth. “I’ve always been torn between tradition and total wildness,” he says, which explains the rather circuitous path he took before settling on music. Having studied a variety of subjects in college—everything from psychology to art to economics—to dipping his toes into the world of fashion working with Marc Jacobs and at The Row with the Olsen twins, Kittrell picked up a support system and a family of creative souls that help support him on the journey. “I’ve lived on rooftops in Bushwick and brownstones in Chelsea. I’ve traveled around the world. At some point I just threw caution to the wind. It was rough at times and it lead me to experience a variety of hardships, but it also brought to the place I was meant to be—which is playing music.”
“A lot of this music is about running way,” explains Kittrell, “I don’t mean that in a escapist kind of way, but more in terms of exploration. So much of my life has been about running away from tradition and traditional ways of thinking, which seeps into the music we make together. It’s about discovery. It’s not so much about running away from something bad, but rather running towards something really beautiful.”
Recent praise for Baby Alpaca:
"My dreams are never like Chris Kittrell's "Sea Of Dreams," but I wish they were. Watching this animation will be as close as I get". - NPR's Bob Boilen
“…Sea of Dreams, which channels The Smiths with it’s dreamy, light dada-rock production - think soft, romantic rock that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. The debut EP ranges from playful to emotional, but always leaves you impressed. “ – Disco Naïveté
“"psychedelic dream-folk” – Interview Magazine
“…schooled in the Brolin-way of sparse, soulful pop. Everything is there to be inspected. There to be prodded at. But with nothing overwhelming the vital element - Kittrell's vocals - you've no reason not to pay attention.” – This is Fake DIY

MATTHEW J. TOW PREMIERES NEW VIDEO
MATTHEW J. TOW PREMIERES NEW VIDEOWITH HUFFINGTON POST

NEW ALBUM AVAILABLE VIA XEMU RECORDS
Huffington Post has premiered the music video for Matthew J. Tows song, Its Gonna Be Alright. The video follows a guitar-toting drifter and his encounters with some gritty characters in the harsh city. The psychedelic, folk-inspired tune appears on the Australian songwriters debut full-length, The Way of Things, out now from label Xemu Records.
Watch the video for Its Gonna Be Alright here:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-ragogna/a-chat-with-ascap-preside_b_3534385.html
Tow says of the video, It was really important for me to fit the lyrics and imagery of the song with the right video. The song is really just an old time parable and an ode to the downtrodden in life, but ultimately its about how we all search for some sort of meaning through an understanding of our own situation. I worked closely with film makers Daddy Issues Productions here in Sydney to get the video just right.
Tow earned great acclaim for his ability to create condensed melodic rock gems at the drop of a hat during his time fronting The Lovetones and Drop City. Tow has also released four albums under the guise of Colorsound, taking a much more instrumental and experimental approach than his other projects. His musical endeavors led to him touring with the likes of Morrisey, Stereolab, The Stone Roses, Dead Meadow, Yo La Tengo, Manic Street Preachers, and Brian Jonestown Massacre (a group which Tow served in as a touring guitarist in and a contributing songwriter for the 2003 album And This Is Our Music.
For The Way Of Things, Tow enlisted Collin Hegna of The Brian Jonestown Massacre to produce, with Ryan Carlson van Kriedt (guitarist of Icelandic psychedelic outfit, Dead Skeletons) also heavily contributing to the album.
Tow will be announcing tour dates in support of The Way of Things shortly.

MOBY ANNOUNCES HIS MOST COLLABORATIVE ALBUM TO DATE INNOCENTS
MOBY
MOBY ANNOUNCES HIS MOST COLLABORATIVE ALBUM TO DATE INNOCENTS RELEASED ON OCTOBER 1st, 2013
WAYNE COYNE, COLD SPECKS, MARK LANEGAN, DAMIEN JURADO AND MORE WORK WITH MOBY ON NEW ALBUM
MOBY TO PLAY JUST 3 EXCLUSIVE SHOWS IN LOS ANGELES ‘A CASE FOR SHAME’ FROM MOBY AND COLD SPECKS AVAILABLE FROM ITUNES NOW
Moby is one of the most innovative and individual forces in electronic and popular music today. He has sold over 20 million albums, headlined Glastonbury, and is back with arguably one of the best albums of his career, Innocents, available October 1st via Mute. Moby chose to make this record with a stellar cast. For the first time in his career he worked with an outside producer, friend Mark “Spike” Stent, whose résumé includes Madonna, U2, Muse, Björk, and Massive Attack. The list of eminent collaborators on Innocents includes Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips), alt-rock legend Mark Lanegan, Cold Specks, Skylar Grey – best known for co-writing and performing on Eminem and Rihanna’s Love The Way You Lie; indie-folk singer Damien Jurado, and Inyang Bassey who was the vocalist on The Right Thing from Destroyed. He has named them the Innocents.
"I spend most of my time alone in my studio, so for Innocents it seemed like a really nice idea to involve other people in the making of the record. Working with all of these collaborators has helped me to make a record that I'm very proud of, and working this way also gave me some semblance of a social life…" -Moby
The Innocents became the inspirational motif for the album, embracing human vulnerability and the desire for human connection, while celebrating imperfection in a world that too often esteems unrealistic and artificial perfection. The thematic vulnerability is also reflected in the production, "Spike" Stent is known for big productions, but given the nature of the songs on Innocents he and Moby committed to a much more analog and lo-fi production approach. To this end they almost exclusively used old (and usually broken..) equipment in the making of the record. Much of Innocents recalls early Moby in the best way.
Moby has been retrofitting antiquated styles and archaic sounds to the electronic age since “Natural Blues” – one of many enduring hits off of his 1999, twelve-million-plus selling international smash album Play. The epic, emotional and melodic nature of this album reminds us of Moby’s musical ingenuity and singles him out as one of music’s most creative forces. The first song to be released from the album is the Cold Specks collaboration “A Case For Shame” available from iTunes now.
The video for “A Case For Shame” was directed by Moby, and shot at his home, starring the innocents on the album artwork. "The video is about dying and going to a realm populated by the recently deceased. At first glance the recently deceased seem frightening and odd, as they're wearing conventionally strange and scary masks. But then you realize that the recently deceased aren't trying to be scary, they're wearing the masks because they're ashamed." The entire concert tour for Innocents will consist of three, and only three, shows in Los Angeles, most likely at a theatre within walking distance from Moby's home. Details to be announced.
Track-listing: 1. Everything That Rises 2. A Case For Shame (with Cold Specks) 3. Almost Home (with Damien Jurado) 4. Going Wrong 5. The Perfect Life (with Wayne Coyne) 6. The Last Day (with Skylar Grey) 7. Don't Love Me (with Inyang Bassey) 8. A Long Time 9. Saints 10. Tell Me (with Cold Specks) 11. The Lonely Night (with Mark Lanegan) 12. The Dogs
