Syd Arthur Announces April Release

SYD ARTHUR TO RELEASE NEW RECORD,SOUND MIRROR, APRIL 22
ANNOUNCES NEW YORK AND LOS ANGELES FEBRUARY DATES
SXSW AND COACHELLA CONFIRMED

Harvest Records is excited to announce that Canterbury, England, psychedelic rock quartet Syd Arthur will release their new album Sound Mirror on April 22. Sound Mirror is the follow up to the November 2013 re-release of their first album On An On. The band has also confirmed Los Angeles and New York shows for February, as well as performances at SXSW and Coachella. Show information is below.
Hailed by MOJO as "Canterbury's dazzling new sons," Syd Arthur offer a strikingly fresh take on 21st century psychedelia, their exceptional approach born of prodigious musicianship, elemental songcraft, and an unabashed spirit of adventure. Released in the UK in 2012, On An On swings as much as it swirls, with songs like first single "Ode To The Summer," whose video was premiered in America by Stereogum , fusing kosmische jazz and expansive grooves with arcadian instrumentation, intricate time signatures, and lyrical, free-spirited melodies to conjure a rather potent and particular musical magic. On An On justly earned Syd Arthur reams of UK attention, with critical acclaim and increasingly bigger gigs, including recent tours alongside White Denim and confirmed fan Paul Weller.
Comprising Liam Magill (lead vocals, guitar), his brother Joel (bass, vocals), Raven Bush (violin, keyboards, mandolin), and Fred Rother (drums), the band first came together early in the new millennium, initially to perform at the outdoor gatherings presented by the brothers Magill in what Liam describes as "really interesting places" around their native Canterbury.
Nourished by a steady diet of jazz and funk, folk and world music, the band explored the myriad possibilities of improvisation, impelling themselves and their one-of-a-kind vision towards heretofore-uncharted territory.
Dubbing themselves Syd Arthur - a name that conjures at minimum three of psychedelia's most magical monikers - the band looked for new ways to move forward, educating themselves to recording's vast possibilities by building their own Wicker Studios in 2009. Conveniently located on the edge of South East London, Wicker allowed Syd Arthur to assimilate the dark arts of production, engineering, and mixing, offering them innumerable new routes for their autonomous musical activity.

Rookie premieres new Tacocat mp3 "Crimson Wave"

SURF TACOCAT'S "CRIMSON WAVE"; NEW ALBUM NVM OUT 2/25/14

MP3 - "Crimson Wave"
MP3 - "
Bridge to Hawaii"

Yesterday evening, Rookie Magazine premiered "Crimson Wave," the second mp3 from NVM, the upcoming full-length by Seattle pop-punk faves TacocatBUST Magazine has already praised NVM as a record that's "full of hilarious jokes, ferocious tambourines, and pop hooks galore" which will have you "struggling to sing along, due to your inability to stifle LOLs." They single out "Crimson Wave" as a "clever surf-rock ode to dealing with periods." Stream or download the track at the link above. Tacocat are currently plotting a nationwide tour, including a Valentine's Day album release bonanza and shows at SXSW 2014. NVM is out on February 25th. Review copies are available upon request.

About the record:
Like a fluorescent-lit snack-aisle oasis in some desolate interstate road stop, brimming with Skittles and limited-edition Sno Balls, Tacocat's Easter-egg-hued pop-punk-pop is bubblegum-sticky with hooks, bound to brighten up the most drab stretch of bummer backroad.
The band's four-person, seven-layer-burrito came together organically: Lelah Maupin (drums) and Eric Randall (guitar) met in their native Longview, WA—two hours south of Seattle, the very town that Green Day named their breakout debut single after. Lelah's family room was wallpapered with framed Magic Eye posters, hence "Stereogram," the cross-eyed love letter to that bizarre ‘90s optical fad. She met lanky Eric while both worked at Safeway, wearing the chain's distinctive navy aprons before breaking north to Seattle. Eric's band The Trashies practiced and played in the basement of the 24/7 House in the Central District, where Long Beach, CA native Bree McKenna (bass) was living, amongst the dust, boxes, and spiders. Lelah met Butte, MT native Emily Nokes (voice, tambourine) in one excruciatingly early/boring graphic design class, slipping her a doodled-upon note; she soon noticed Emily's big voice while she sang along with R. Kelly on the radio. Emily and Bree hit it off one sloshy night at the Comet. Eric impressed Emily with his reenactments of scenes from Anaconda. Sometime around 2007, via countless raucous house party shows, the legend of Tacocat was born.
The foursome would quickly make a name for themselves with their simply energizing power pop, drawing on classic Northwest energy with an uncommonly upbeat, surfy swag that could only come from gray skies and hydroponic sunshine. Their sly and unabashed ‘90s revivalism has, in the past, found the band pondering Evan Dando and Waterworld—and Bree herself explains finding about riot grrrl via Napster and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You. They've described themselves variously as "Feminist sci-fi" and "Equal parts Kurt and Courtney"; oh well, whatever…NVM
Press quotes:

"A new, weed-y thrust in pop rock...amorphously political music, supporting a variety of causes under the umbrella of the Party party."
-- NPR

"Garage-y basement-show-bred pop punk with feminist tendencies."
-- The Boston Phoenix

"Tacocat make food time indie rock with hooks in the choruses and tongues in cheek." -- Brooklyn Vegan

Blackest Ever Black announces Weekend "The '81 Demos"

WEEKEND
(ex-YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS)
THE '81 DEMOS
OUT 3/3/14
STREAM A TRACK  Blackest Ever Black is pleased to present the first vinyl edition of the legendary demos recorded in 1981 by Weekend - the trio of Alison Statton, Spike Williams and Simon Booth.Alison Statton began her recording career with Philip and Stuart Moxham in Young Marble Giants, one of the most unique and important bands to come out of the UK post-punk/independent scene. YMGs dissolved in 1981, at which point Statton began writing with Wrexham native Mark 'Spike' Williams, one of the brains behind Z Block Records and a member of the band Reptile Ranch. They joined forces with guitarist Simon Booth to form Weekend, and recorded the exquisite demo versions of 'Drumbeat' (later titled 'Drumbeat For Baby'), 'Red Planes', 'Nostalgia' and 'Summerdays' that are collected on this new 12".At the heart of the record are two truly remarkable pieces: 'Red Planes' and 'Nostalgia'. The former is a dubwise dream-pop epic, Statton's dispassionate, Nico-esque vocal wafting over a clucking Boss DR 55 pulse and seismic bass detonations, while Williams' violin, in Alison's words, "soars and dives and weaves through every possible mood with no inhibitions, creating an almost psychedelic feel, with a menacing undercurrent". It's somehow both starker and more richly atmospheric than the version that appears on the band's debut album, La Varieté (Rough Trade, 1982), not to mention significantly longer - nine minutes in total. Our only complaint is that it doesn't last for nineteen.'Nostalgia', meanwhile, is surely one of the most perfectly elegiac songs committed to tape in the post-punk era. More fleshed-out than the La Varieté version, the instrumentation here - notably Statton's yearning recorder part ("Very Eno," as Spike astutely observes) - amplifies the emotional resonance of an already heart-stopping lyric. Written by Spike and Dave Hoddel, 'Nostalgia' is a poignant meditation on the attraction, and the danger, of dwelling on the past.Shorn of the jazzy flourishes that would define the subsequent studio version, 'Drumbeat' (later titled 'Drumbeat For Baby') has a brittle, choppier quality more in line with Young Marble Giants than Weekend; it remains one of Williams and Statton's most infectious compositions. The instrumental 'Summerdays', is a different beast entirely to the cut on La Varieté; it's primarily a showcase of Simon Booth's lyrical guitar-playing, at times reminiscent of the courtly psychedelia of early Felt or Vini Reilly, and reminding us of Weekend's role as godparents of the nascent indie-pop movement.Jazz became an increasingly prominent component of the Weekend sound, and by the time of La Varieté- their sole studio LP - they had welcomed jazzmen Larry Stabbins (saxophone), Roy Dodds (drums) and Dawson Miller (percussion) into their line-up. But despite its idiosyncratic brilliance and long-lasting influence (Belle & Sebastian and Kalima are but two groups who owe it an enormous debt), nothing on La Varieté, or on the handful of singles and live recordings Weekend put their name to before disbanding in 1983, quite matches the raw, impressionistic power of the '81 demos. The four demos were released as a stand-alone CD by Vinyl Japan in 1995, and included as bonus tracks on Cherry Red's most recent CD reissue of La Varieté; however, until now they have never appeared on vinyl.Licensed from Cherry Red, The '81 Demos (BLACKEST026) is a 12" limited to 1000 pieces, mastered by by Matt Colton at Alchemy and housed in an LP sleeve printed on reverse board stock, with printed inner featuring liner notes by Spike Williams, Alison Statton and Simon Booth. It is due to be released on March 3rd, 2014. Stream the "Red Planes" demo below!

Stephen Verona's "Boardwalk" Finally Released  Available on DVD and Blu-ray March 25th
1979 drama starring Ruth Gordon and Lee Strasberg, from the director of "Lords of Flatbush"   Boardwalk  is a 1979 American drama written by Stephen Verona (Lords of Flatbush, 1974) and Leigh Chapman and directed by Verona. The film has not been available on home video, until now.  Boardwalk  is a film about love, violence, and survival. It was filmed on location at numerous spots in New York city, including the famous but now defunct Dubrow's Cafeteria.  Married for 50 loving years, David (Lee Strasberg) and Becky (Ruth Gordon) have lived in the same Coney Island neighborhood for most of  their life together. But the area is not what it used to be, and their children ask them to move. A powerful and determined man, David states, "I left one country, I'm not about to leave another. This is where I choose to live and nobody, but nobody, is going to make me leave." But Becky becomes ill and David's cafeteria and synagogue are vandalized by thugs. David must make his final stance.   Boardwalk  is Verona's 4th film. He's credited with creating the first music videos, starting with The Beatles... This is the film that launched the careers of Sylvester StalloneHenry Winkler, and Richard Gere, who were all discovered by Verona who says, "Stallone said that I created the character of Rocky, and Henry said that he took his Fonzie character from Sly."

David Buckley Borden Awarded Hibernaculum Artist Residency

David Buckley Borden
Awarded Hibernaculum Artist Residency

Following news of his art at January's ongoing  "Best of Show"  and  "Fun-A-Day"  project in Boston, New England-based artist David Buckley Borden is announcing his participation in the upcoming  Hibernaculum Residency in the New York Adirondacks taking place this Summer and organized by the Trifecta Editions.

Says the Trifectas Helen Popinchalk, "We are thrilled to welcome David Buckley Borden as our first artist-in-residence! We were inspired to select David after seeing the work he has been doing for Bostons Fun-A-Day - a project where artists make a new piece of work every day for the entire month of January. Davids daily works take the form of landscape proposals. Some are clever and practical, others surreal, but all are wonderful and thought-provoking. We cant wait to see what he does during his residency with us! Well be bringing you the fruits of his labors in the form of an incredible print release in Fall 2014."

About David Buckley Borden:

David Buckley Borden is an artist, landscape designer (highly unlicensed landscape architect), and humorist hailing from the great state of New England. His art includes a variety of creative work ranging from landscape installations to pen and ink drawings to silkscreen prints covering an even greater variety of creative interests in landscape architecture, ecology, NTS mapping, land use history, all things great outdoors, and the past, present and future challenges to the lands of North America.

A recent graduate of the landscape architecture masters program at Harvard Universitys Graduate School of Design, Borden worked as a designer within the Urban Studio at Sasaki Associates and is now a member ofGround, Inc., a boutique landscape architecture firm known for its artful landscapes. Borden may be best known around the Greater Boston metropolitan area as co-founder of the Studio Kaiju, often described as the "Kaiju Commissioner." Looking for a new start, Borden left Kaiju Big Battel in 2007 to attend graduate school at theHarvard Graduate School of Design.

After a few years corporate design, Borden is now starting to branch out on his own, working in landscape architecture and exploring New England landscape through his art. Humor still plays big role in his work, which runs the gamut of visual art and site-specific landscape installations. Outside of work, when not leading his one-man campaign for sustainable cutis anserine americana, David can be found quietly playing in the dirt in and around his Cambridge, Massachusetts home.

Since forming in 2009, Leeds-based Eagulls have become synonymous with a discontented, disillusioned kind of anger, molded into bullets of post punk that's rife with urgency and aggression.
Brought together by drummer Henry Ruddell and guitarist Mark 'Goldy' Goldsworthy, they were later joined by friends Liam Matthews on guitar and Tom Kelly on bass. After struggling to find a singer that fitted with their vision for the band, they roped in George Mitchell to be their frontman without ever having heard him sing before.
For a band like Eagulls, touring is their lifeblood, as shown through the relentless bouts of gigging that have colored their four years together, in between working tedious day jobs in the bars and retail outlets of Leeds together. Booking support slots with the likes of Iceage, Merchandise, Parquet Courts, and Fucked Up they've carved out a reputation for chaotic and confrontational live shows.
Now, following further standalone releases, their self-titled debut album is complete and slated for release on March 4, 2014. Finessing the incensed spirit of their early tracks and gigs, it sets its stall out as a heavier, darker and more exhilarating step on from what's come before. "Nerve Endings," opening track and first taste of the record, encapsulates that in throbbing bass and George hollering "can't find my end" whilst "Fester-Blister" provides an anthemic streak cutting through a wall of frenetic noise. "Tough Luck" takes inspiration from outside the punk pool associated with Eagulls, boasting a rumbling Joy Division-esque bassline. It all ends on the searing rush of "Soulless Youth," which finds George declaring "I never feel fine/They're soulless inside... the soulless youth," with enough bile to make it clear just how he feels about his generation.
"We're all more pessimistic, more jaded, more cynical," explains Goldy of the band's moodier shift. "When you finish uni, you've got optimism and you think everything's going to be alright. You think you'll just take a shit job in a shop and you'll only have to do it for a while but then you're still there a year later..."
It's this frustration and sardonicism that fuels Eagulls and lights a match under their first LP. Though they admit to there being "lighter moments" on the record, on the whole it's a gloomy, overcast affair. Influenced by post-punk and shoegaze (primarily the sonic assaults of My Bloody Valentine) combined with their own background in hardcore bands, it follows their first trip to America earlier this year for SXSW (a trip the band sacked in their jobs to take) - the catalyst for their signing to US indie label Partisan.
With the record now complete and ready for release, expect their own unique brand of mayhem to be lighting up venues around the country as they return to their natural environment of the road to reinforce their abrasive brilliant reputation once more.
