Riot Fest Unveils 10th Anniversary Line-Ups
Riot Fest Unveils 10th Anniversary Line-UpsFor Chicago, Denver & Toronto
The Cure, Jane’s Addiction, The National, Rise Against, Social Distortion, The Flaming Lips, Weezer, Slayer, Descendents, Samhain, Patti Smith, Wu-Tang Clan & others revealed And a special panel discussion with members of P*ssy Riot Tickets on sale now! – More bands to be announced soon
Riot Fest is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year, and to celebrate organizers have assembled three festivals in North America this September: Toronto's Riot Fest & Expo (9/6-9/7) at Downsview Park , Chicago's Riot Fest & Carnival (9/12-9/14) in Humboldt Park , and Denver's Riot Fest & Sideshow (9/19-9/21) at May Farms -- with all three headlined by The Cure.
"Hard to believe it's been 10 years,” reflects Michael Petryshyn, founder of the festival. “Really doesn't seem it's been all that long. But, my partner Sean (McKeough) and I are so very lucky that the fans believe in what wedo...And I'm just as thankful that a good chunk of our friends from over the years are coming back to play and blow out a few birthday candles alongside us. Between both, that's what makes this year special."
Riot Fest's flagship festival in Chicago will once again be held in Humboldt Park, a historic “crown jewel” of the city’s park district with a lovely view of downtown Chicago, beautiful shade trees, lagoons and fields. This year's lineup features over 100 artists, with a mix of Riot alum and newbies. There will be no shortage of surprises, including a special interactive panel discussion with Russian conceptual artists and formerly-imprisoned activists, P*ssy Riot (Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina). Details on the panel discussion with P*ssy Riot/Zona Prava will be announced in the coming weeks, but fans should anticipate a novel festival experience unlike one ever witnessed at Riot.
Also, to hold true to the precedent that Riot Fest has become known for, there will also be a number of reunions including Samhain, Blue Meanies, Saosin w/ Anthony Green, Failure, RX Bandits and Mineral, as well as rare and special appearances by Paul Weller, C*ck Sparrer, Mudhoney, Cheap Trick, Patti Smith, Gwar, Thurston Moore and more.
Riot Fest arrives in Denver for the 2nd year, where fans will gather at May Farms in Byers, Colorado for three days of music, rides and other attractions in view of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The Denver festival also offers the option to camp and spend the weekend enjoying the great outdoors. This year, organizers have streamlined parking, camping operations and other aspects of the festival, while capital improvements are being made to the site itself.

Not to forget Toronto's festival; its lineup was released last week, organizers are happy to addThe Cure to the bill at Downsview Park, where they join City and Colour, Metric, Rise Against, The National, and a multitude of others. The fest’s move to Downsview will allow rides and other attractions this year as well.
Tickets for all 3 Riot Fests are on sale now via www.ticketfly.com . More band announcements are forthcoming as well as a few more 10th Anniversary surprises.

Howls Self-Titled Debut Released Today
HOWLS Self-Titled Debut Out on Buddyhead Records
“…It may be the sexiest record of 2014.” – Philthy Mag

Los Angeles’ Howls long awaited self-titled debut it out today May 13, 2014 on Buddyhead Records.
Although this is the first album from Howls, the duo, Annalee Fery and Christian Stone are seasoned musicians who have been a part of the music scene in Los Angeles for years with projects like Monsters are Waiting, Campfire Girls and Lonely Trees.
Time, which is the core theme of this album, is a funny thing. It separates, conjoins, distances and overlaps our respective paths in life, and no one knows this as well as Howls. The two artists (Annalee and Christian) have been circling in and out of each others atmospheres for years, but only in the past few years did they decide to act on an impulse both had known for far too long; the two were meant to make meaningful art together. This expertly crafted album full of noise-rock riffs, acoustic meditations and snaking synth squiggles has been described as "minimalist," and "haunting" by Buzzbands LA.Groundsounds says “Their music has extreme depth to it, with seemingly brilliant mixtures of minimalist elements, as well as smooth, haunting, dark-shaded electronica,” and Philthy Mag called the album "playfully dark, flirtatious, and danceable to the nth degree.”

The Wytches today announce their debut album, Annabel Dream Reader, which will be released on August 26 via Partisan Records. To go along with this announcement, they have shared their new video for "Wire Frame Mattress," which was directed by legendary rock photographer Steve Gullick. Says Gullick, "Promo videos have never really been my thing. I did a few a decade or so ago but have steered clear ever since. When I was asked to shoot a video for The Wytches however, I jumped at the chance - this band are special and I want to be involved."
The Wytches will embark on their first-ever US tour this summer, supporting Cloud Nothings and METZ. They will hit major markets on the West and East coasts, and the full list of tour dates can be found below.
Formed in Brighton in 2011,The Wytches comprises Kristian Bell (vocals, guitar), Dan Rumsey (bass, vocals) and Gianni Honey (drums). Led by Bell's luminous lyricism, feral delivery and overdriven, surf-like guitar bends, the trio create a sound that is at once raucous and unruly, and yet decorated with semi-automatic poetry and authentic emotional clout.
Having left Peterborough after feeling stifled by their hometown's inward-looking hardcore scene, Bell and the semi-professional poker playing Honey relocated to Brighton in the autumn of 2011, applying to the city's university before enlisting Bournemouth-raised, aspiring adventure novelist Rumsey on bass - the sole applicant of an advert placed on campus. From the outset promoting their own shows in the city, The Wytches have never lost the DIY spirit of their hardcore origins: arranging their own tours; printing flyers; pressing their first single, "Digsaw;" inviting friend of the band Samuel Gull to create their artwork; and producing their own videos - all in spite of squeezed funds.
It is this relentlessness and resilience that has led to The Wytches headlining countless shows across the UK and Europe to date, acting as chief support to Blood Red Shoes, The Cribs, Drenge, METZ, Japandroids, amongst others. In 2013 the band released a number of singles and EPs on London's Hate Hate Hate Records ("Beehive Queen," Thunder Lizard Revisited EP, "Robe for Juda"), before attracting the attention of Heavenly Recordings in the UK and Partisan Records in the USA, who will release their debut album, Annabel Dream Reader, on August 25 (UK) / August 26 (US).
Recorded at Liam Watson's 8-track analogue ToeRag Studios in Hackney, Annabel Dream Reader was tracked in two days under the supervision of producer Bill Ryder-Jones (ex-The Coral). Comprising thirteen songs, Annabel Dream Reader sees the three-piece accomplish a dark and heady sound that embraces the black arts and the more extreme limits of rock, but which is never prescriptively macabre. Far from it, the band displays a broadness of influences - all at once the songs reference surf, grunge, metalcore, spy movie scores.
Bell admits to being inspired more by singer-songwriters (Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen, Roland S. Howard) than specific bands, and already he is an assured manipulator of his tools, combining Egyptianesque harmonic-minor scales with vivid, assonant wordplay, and utilising his voice as an instrument in its own right. Recording to rolling magnetic tape at ToeRag - with little room for error - lends an honesty and immediacy to the trio's performances, while Ryder-Jones supplies the softer songs with flourishes of organ, and allows the self-confessed 'obnoxiously heavy' sections to detonate freely.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, The Wytches admit a strong desire to erase and 'switch up' their sound with each album - plans are already afoot for a more intricate, more instrumentally diverse second record. Returning from Austin's SXSW Festival on a wave of praise from the likes of The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, NPR, FUSE, SPIN and Flavorwire, the band will continue touring extensively throughout 2014 - taking in the UK, Europe and the USA - while promoting Annabel Dream Reader and untethering a slew of singles beginning with a limited edition cassette, "Gravedweller," their first for Partisan/Heavenly.

The Orwells Anitcipated Album "Disgraceland" out June 3rd
THE ORWELLS ANTICIPATED NEW ALBUM DISGRACELAND OUT JUNE 3rd & NEW TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED
Band Releases 5-Part Live Video Series Filmed at Fellow Chicago Native Steve Albini's Electrical Audio Studios
"Meet The Orwells, five pretty ordinary-seeming kids from Elmhurst who just might be rock's next big thing." - Chicago Tribune (read the full article here)
'Who Needs You' is my "Summer Anthem" - Bob Boilen, NPR
"The best new live band in America" - NMEChicago's The Orwells will release their irresistibly raucous yet masterfully architected Disgraceland June 3rd on Canvasback Music. The band's live reputation as an always uproarious and entertaining show has kept them on the road tirelessly building a base of fans ravenous for more. Luckily, the Orwells have also announced that their current tour, which includes stops at Rough Trade NYC, Bonnaroo, a UK tour and more through August, will continue with new fall tour dates throughout North America. Pre-sale info and tour dates below. For those looking to get a better idea of what The Orwells are all about, a 5-part series of live performances filmed at fellow Chicago native Steve Albini's legendary Electrical Audio Studios premiered yesterday featuring the tracks "Who Needs You" and "Let It Burn", with 3 more videos set for release from now until the album hits. Disgraceland is available for pre-order now on iTunes, with album track "Southern Comfort" as instant grat.
The Orwells "Who Needs You" (Official Live Room Performance)
The Orwells "Let It Burn" (Official Live Room Performance)
The Orwells's 2012 debut Remember When and 2013's Other Voices and Who Needs YouEPs were made with a youthful energy and unabashed love for rock & roll which set the stage for the band's new album. "I'm not that old but I'm getting pretty wise" -- a sentiment within the early seconds of The Orwells' new album, Disgraceland, pretty much sums up the eleven tracks that follow it. In guitarist Matt O'Keefe's words, "We wanted to capture what the last 18-20 years of our lives were like, in this anywhere USA suburb." Recorded last fall at studios in London, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Woodstock, NY, the album was produced with the help of Chris Coady (Smith Westerns, Beach House), Dave Sitek (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santigold, TV On the Radio) and Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys).
The Orwells are cousins Mario Cuomo (vocals) and Dominic Corso (guitar), twins Grant (bass) and Henry Brinner (drums), and Matt O'Keefe (guitar)

BLOOD RED SHOES ON NORTH AMERICAN TOUR NOW
BLOOD RED SHOES OUT NOW VIA JAZZLIFE/[PIAS] AMERICA

UK rock duo Blood Red Shoes are back on US Soil. Steven Ansell & Laura-Mary Carter will play a number of dates across the US & Canada making stops on both coasts. Support comes from Radkey. The band are available for interviews.
They're touring in support of their s/t album out now via Jazzlife/[PIAS] America. Blood Red Shoes is available in a standard edition and as a deluxe version featuring live recordings.
The band are known for their relentless tour schedule and DIY ethos. They galvanized their worldwide fan base earlier this year by placing ten unique QR codes across ten major cities. Fans who tracked down the codes will be admitted to any Blood Red Shoes gig for the rest of their life. If that wasn't enough the two took the time to Skype with each winner resulting in this hilarious clip of questionable sobriety.

H.R. Giger, February 5, 1940 - May 12, 2014
H.R. Giger, February 5, 1940 - May 12, 2014

H.R. Giger Photo by Katharina Vonow
"I fight the impending lure of belated sleepFor fear of waking up and you are gone"
Triptykon, My Pain, 2010
For the first time in 74 years, last night was a night not illuminated by the indescribable light that was H.R. Giger.
H.R. Giger became our mentor, against all odds, when we, somewhat audaciously, first established contact with him some 30 years ago. At a time when almost everybody ridiculed, ignored, or even obstructed the music the then almost completely unknown Swiss underground band Hellhammer was creating, Giger listened to us, talked to us, and gave us a chance. Not least at a time when he was at one of many peaks of his path.
A little more than a year later, his exceptionally stunning art made what might be one of Celtic Frost's most important albums, To Mega Therion, even more significant. Other links to Giger's universe also manifested themselves, almost as if it was predestined.
Eventually, after many more years, the mentorship became a friendship. It was a friendship and a personal connection I valued infinitely, and it also included his wonderful wife, Carmen, and many other remarkable people that were part of his universe.
When Celtic Frost came to an end so acrimoniously in 2008, H.R. Giger and his wife were among those who witnessed my uncontained despair and stood by me. That Giger subsequently agreed to collaborate with my new group, Triptykon, and thus enabled us to release our first album, Eparistera Daimones, with one of his most dramatic paintings on the cover meant the world to me.
It apparently pleased Giger, too. He told me so on several occasions, and he completely stunned me in October 2011 by proposing that we continue the collaboration between him and Triptykon. I would have never asked for such a thing, because I never would have wanted to appear insatiable. He brushed such reservations aside, and it was his mentorship, friendship, and art that enabled us, once again, to release a second album on which music and cover art formed a seamless symbiosis. Only a few weeks ago, he held the result in his hands and loved it.
Regardless of anything I may write about H.R. Giger, however, none of these words will ever be able to truly, accurately describe him as a person and as a friend. It is utterly inconceivable to imagine a world without his wit, his perception, his genius, his horizon, his determination, his humour, his friendship, and his immeasurable kindness. And yet, we are now left in exactly such a world.
