New York, NY - May 20, 2014 - The Village Voice announces today that Dinosaur Jr. will be headlining its fourth annual free 4Knots Music Festival, being held on Saturday, July 12th from 1-8pm at New York City's South Street Seaport, rain or shine. Dinosaur Jr. joins previously announced artists Those Darlins, Speedy Ortiz, Radkey, Viet Cong, Nude Beach, and Juan Wauters, who are all scheduled to perform, plus more to be announced soon. The Julie Ruin, who were scheduled to play this year's 4Knots festival, were forced to cancel all upcoming touring plans due to Kathleen Hanna's ongoing struggle with Lyme Disease.

With this year's festival, The Voicecontinues their 14-year history of curating free, outdoor, all ages live music festivals featuring the most renowned and emerging artists breaking through today's scene. Running between every borough of New York City and culminating near the South Street Seaport, the East River runs at a speed of "4 knots", hence the name of the festival at this unique and historic location.
Announced earlier this month, the Official 4Knots Music Festival After Party will take place at Webster Hall on July 12th, immediately following the festival. The lineup for this show and tickets will be available soon.

SUN RA MUSIC ARCHIVE LAUNCHES CENTENNIAL MASTERED FOR iTUNES REISSUE PROGRAM, MAY 20, 2014
Sun Ra Centennial Celebrated with Reissue of Classic Albums many with previously unreleased bonus tracks

(New York, NY) May 20, 2014 -- May 20, 2014 marks the centennial of music legend Sun Ra's arrival on planet Earth (he left in 1993). To commemorate the astonishing and prolific legacy of this unique artist, the Sun Ra Music Archive has embarked on an extensive and exclusive Mastered for iTunes reissue program. The Mastered for iTunes format exceeds the standard 16-bit sound quality of CDs, starting with 24-bit transfers from the analog master tapes. This ensures that the music is delivered to listeners with increased audio fidelity that more closely replicates what the artists, recording engineers and producers intended. The albums will be released Tuesday, May 20, on the Enterplanetary Koncepts label (full Sun Ra catalog can be viewed at itunes.com/sunramusic).
Sun Ra was "filed under jazz," but cannot be defined by one category. Like Ellington, Brian Wilson, and Frank Zappa, Sun Ra was sui generis. He explored electronica, funk, avant-garde soundscapes, musique concrète, and songcraft, while his styles spanned hard bop, exotica, R&B, piano improv, cosmic soul, swing, doo-wop, balladry, and invented forms. Sun Ra's catalog is unfathomably large, requiring a universe of shelf space. On his self-owned El Saturn label he released hundreds of albums, many in limited pressings, spawning a worldwide collector's market. Many of those collectibles are now available for the first time in digital format, under license from Sun Ra LLC, owned by the heirs of the legendary musician.
The Sun Ra Mastered for iTunes releases include material culled from session and rehearsal tapes, and production and album masters. The series includes a significant amount of previously unreleased material, some stereo mixes of tracks previously available only in mono, and complete versions of tracks which had been edited for the original LPs. Many of these tapes, and the records that were made from them, are high-quality lo-fi, having been recorded in studios, nightclubs, and ad hoc rehearsal spaces. The setup often consisted of just one or two mics, an open reel tape deck, and a primitive mixing console. The tapes reveal weird transient sounds - musicians bumping mics, a cough, dropped equipment, fingernails clicking on keyboards, accidental percussion, the studio phone ringing during a solo. These were not recorded with a Miles Davis budget in a Dave Brubeck studio. You've heard of "garage rock"? This is "garage jazz." Yet with 24-bit transfers and meticulous restoration, these historic recordings have never sounded better.
These performances feature Arkestra stalwarts Marshall Allen (still touring with the band at age 89), tenor saxophonist John Gilmore, reed virtuoso Pat Patrick, bassist Ronnie Boykins, drummers Clifford Jarvis and Tommy "Bugs" Hunter, vocalist June Tyson, trombonist Julian Priester, percussionist Jim Herndon, and dozens of other illustrious members of the rotating Arkestral entourage.
The Sun Ra Music Archive, maintained by executive director Michael D. Anderson, houses an extensive library of 7-1/2 and 15 ips master tapes and session reels. Using these prime sources, Anderson has compiled 24-bit digital transfers, which have been painstakingly refined. The series rollout focuses on the first half of Sun Ra's recording career, roughly 1956 to 1974, including many rare titles. This is a year-long project, with 21 albums slated for the May 20 launch, and dozens more to follow. Because it's disorienting for curious new fans to know where to start savoring an artist who released countless albums and composed almost 1,000 songs, the Archive has compiled ten thematic collections, the "Explore the Cosmos" series, with such categories as "Outer Space," "Hard Bop," "Exotica," "Avant-Garde," "The Blues," and "Percussion."
Anderson has a legacy connection with Sun Ra and is one of the foremost keepers of the flame. A former radio DJ known as "Doctor Bop" (WBGO) and "The Good Doctor" (WFMU), Anderson played drums for and recorded with the Arkestra in the late 1970s. He lived with the leader and musicians at Saturn House in Philadelphia, recorded extensive interviews with Sunny, and was appointed Sun Ra's personal tape librarian. Anderson has archived, indexed, and preserved these tapes for decades, and is delighted that a wider audience can finally hear Sun Ra's deeper catalog in a superior mastering format. Anderson and his project partner, Irwin Chusid (of WFMU), have repaired tape breaks and distortion, corrected speed irregularities, fixed audio dropouts, and removed intrusive transients from the digital files. In some cases analog tape hiss has been lowered a tad, but they did not attempt to obliterate all analog artifacts. These recordings aren't perfect. They will never be perfect. You don't want them perfect. That might inadvertently remove a layer of soul.
Each release includes a downloadable pdf booklet, researched and written by Chusid (author of Songs in the Key of Z: The Curious Universe of Outsider Music). These booklets encapsulate the story behind each album without arcane technical details. They are greeting cards, welcoming you to the universe of Sun Ra. Explore the Cosmos.

Beach Day announce new Album Native Echoes out August 19th
Beach Day New Album Native Echoes out August 19 on Kanine Records Stream "All My Friends Were Punks" at Consequence of Sound
Listen: "All My Friends Were Punks" via Consequence of Sound or Youtube
Drenched in a deep sense of nostalgia, the power-pop anthem pays homage to the band's hazy teen years of searching for identity in the tumultuous Florida punk scene."
Beach Day - the name's more about attitude than genre. It's about the ease and breeze of their modern wall of sound. Their tall, bright merge of garage rock, surf pop and girl group sounds is inspired by nostalgia but powered by fresh verve, sitting pretty alongside contemporaries like Cults, Tennis, La Luz, Those Darlins and Dum Dum Girls. And while their native Florida may be in a state of perma-vacation, Beach Day isn't.
On Native Echoes, they've become greater than the sum of their throwback influences. After a year of touring in anticipation and support for their debut, Trip Trap Attack, Beach Day headed to Detroit - mecca for both garage rock and the girl group sound - and into the studio of Jim Diamond (the Sonics, the Dirtbombs, the White Stripes). Venturing far north in the dead of winter with nothing but their jean jackets resulted in all studio time and zero sunny distractions. Guided by the experienced hand of Jim Diamond, Beach Day dropped the bits of Northern Soul that appeared on their debut and replaced it with feedback, foot stomps, and an electric 12-string guitar run through an Allen Gyrophonic speaker to make it sound like a synth. And so, Native Echoes emerges packing more modern grit. Just listen to hot-revvers like "All My Friends Were Punks" and "I'm Just Messing Around." With more instrumental sophistication and all-tape recording, the album features more atmosphere and patina to deepen its new octane.
However, Beach Day's signature features remain, including Drake's huge, young Ronnie Spector-ish voice. And though she assures there aren't actually any love songs on the record, Beach Day's romanticism is still, thankfully, in bloom ("BFFs," "Don't Call Me on the Phone"). It's a record about friendships: the rebellious ones, the lost ones, and the ones that betray. It's those friendships that are being romanticized on Native Echoes. And of course there's still their famous Florida terroir as featured prominently in "Gnarly Waves" and "How Do You Sleep at Night," whose ocean sounds were recorded in the middle of the night at Drake's favorite hometown beach: Hollywood Beach. After dusting the Beach Day sound with some Detroit mystique, there's just more under the hood this time. An analog sound with Beach Day's hue? This could be classic.
Beach Day is: Kimmy Drake (vocals, guitar), Skyler Black (drums), with addition of a bassist for the live shows.
Upcoming Beach Day Shows:
06.17 - Jacksonville, FL @ Underbelly
06.19 - Toronto, ON @ NXNE - Wrongbar
06.21 - Toronto, ON @ NXNE - Gap Day Party

The Voyager's rootsy, golden glow comes courtesy of Lewis and the artists she chose to produce various tracks, including Ryan Adams (who, alongside Mike Viola, produced all but three of the tracks), Beck, and Lewis' longtime collaborator Johnathan Rice. The Voyager finds the always relatable songwriter at her sharp-witted best, singing about her recent experiences with honesty and incisiveness.
"Making The Voyager got me through one of the most difficult periods of my life," she says. "After Rilo Kiley broke up and a few really intense personal things happened, I completely melted down. It nearly destroyed me. I had such severe insomnia that, at one point, I didn't sleep for five straight nights. Many of the songs on The Voyagercame out of the need to occupy my mind in the moments when I just couldn't shut down."
After several years of writing new material, Lewis took 2013 off to tour with The Postal Service. Sharing the spotlight was a freeing experience, providing the realization that she needed to give up control in order to move forward. While on the road, she reached out to Ryan Adams to record at his newly built studio, Pax Am, at Sunset Sound. Her first day back from tour, she went into the studio with Adams and his partner Mike Viola, and found the creative collaboration she was missing.
"Ryan and I didn't know each other very well before this album -- we had hardly even listened to one another's music, to be honest. But I trusted the vision, and Ryan ended up being the person to get me over the fear of finishing something I'd been working on for so long. This record was the hardest one I ever made," she says. "The Voyager tells that story: the longest night of my life and the journey to finally getting some rest."
The track-listing for The Voyager is as follows:
Head Underwater
She's Not Me
Just One Of The Guys
Slippery Slopes

BORIS premiere first video from forthcoming album 'Noise'
BORIS premiere first video from forthcoming album Noise, announce more U.S. tour dates

Japanese trio BORIS premiere the first video from their forthcoming first official album in three years, titled Noise. The band shares the clip via Stereogum, which is available to watch/share HERE .
BORIS has also added new North American tour dates, including FYF Fest in Los Angeles in late August. Please see complete dates below.
The trio debuted the first album track "Quicksilver" recently via Pitchfork, which is available HERE . (Direct Soundcloud link HERE.)
BORIS has always demolished expectations of what a band can do musically and aesthetically. In keeping with that tradition, they again flip the script by serving up their most all-encompassing effort to date. Noise is an amplification of BORIS' endless pursuit of musical extremes while moving aggressive, intense rock into new territories.
In writing Noise, BORIS was intent upon condensing all that the band had explored over the years, in order to create something more bold, streamlined and powerful. And, upon completion, the band considers Noise its most defining effort, stating, "If we had to suggest just one album for those unfamiliar with BORIS' music, we will pick this for sure." That's a bold statement from a band having released over 20 albums covering a vast array of sounds. Yet somehow throughout the album's 8 song, 58 minute duration, the band masterfully intermingles sludge-rock, blistering crust punk, shimmering shoegaze, epic thunderous doom, psychedelic melodies and just about everything else they've ever done.
Over the course of BORIS' three previous Sargent House albums (Heavy Rocks, Attention Pleaseand New Album) the band sought to expand its musical vision ever further. And, the results helped redefine the band's already iconoclastic sound. However, in early 2013 they decided to return to their classic trio lineup moving forward: drummer/vocalist Atsuo, guitarist/vocalist Wata and bassist/guitarist/vocalist Takeshi. Having been able to explore many new ideas as a quartet in recent years, the band was concerned about logistics, until their very successful residency shows and tour in the U.S. convinced them that BORIS could return to the simpler, solid trio without sacrificing artistic growth. Now, having rebuilt the classic trio's "equilateral triangle" they're heavier, louder, more confident and incisive than ever before.
Noise is also lyrically the band's darkest album to date. Bleak lines like, "throbbing pain this world repeats upon us/ Throb, throb / Throbbing pain, this world makes us suffer," guide the record's most musically upbeat track, "Taiyo No Baka." Everywhere else, dark imagery permeates the songs, adding further weight to the proceedings. Kicking off with the fittingly titled "Melody", the album begins with the uniquely BORIS sound that combines multiple elements into one ferocious metallic-punk-melodic whole. Things take a jagged turn with second track "Vanilla" exhibiting a more experimental edge, while still driven by vocal melody and arpeggiated guitar notes until the song juts into frenzied psychedelic metal riffing. Elsewhere, with Wata on lead vocals, "Heavy Rain" merges the band's early colossal doom with the latter day shoegaze of Attention Please for a song that's both brutally heavy and ethereal. "Quicksilver" is a wailing speedcore track reminiscent of classic Japanese hardcore, with screaming voices, screaming guitars and screaming drums that refuses to relent over the song's first 7 minutes. "Angel" is the album's nearly 19-minute epic centerpiece that builds from entrancing chiming guitar notes and softly pulsing toms, ultimately breaking into a massive wall of drop-tuned sludge and a howling guitar lead reminiscent of BORIS tracks "Feedbacker" and "Flood." The song continues to shift gears several times as it builds in tension and emotion toward a very satisfying resolution, taking the entire track full circle to where it began. Throughout, Noise is an exploration of the free-spirited experimentation that made the band an International cult legend.
Noise will be heard everywhere (excluding Japan) on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on June 17th, 2014.
