My Brightest Diamond's new album out September 16

MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND’S NEW ALBUM THIS IS MY HAND OUT SEPTEMBER 16 ON ASTHMATIC KITTY RECORDS
FIRST SINGLE “PRESSURE” PREMIERES AT  NPR MUSIC
PRE-RELEASE DIGITAL EP OUT JULY 15
TOUR DATES CONFIRMED

“Along with her often-gorgeous singing, Ms. Worden presents an ambitious series of arrangements…the songs glow with rumination…”—The New York Times
The new album from acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician My Brightest Diamond (aka Shara Worden) will be releasedSeptember 16 on Asthmatic Kitty Records (pre-order).  This Is My Hand  features ten new songs, including the first single “Pressure,” which premiered yesterday at  NPR Music  and can now be heard/shared here. Of the song, NPR Music praises, “…a stirring song powered by an incredible drumline…one of the most powerful and dramatic voices of the past decade,” while  Stereogum  proclaims, “…‘Pressure’ is something to be reckoned with. Filled with an army of percussive sounds from big drums to twinkling bells along with shrieking brass and crushing synths, it’s a huge production, but it all sounds small compared to Worden’s operatic voice.” In addition to the full-length album, a separate five-song EP entitled, None More Than You , will be released July 15.
In celebration of the release, Worden will embark on a worldwide tour this fall, including dates at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and L.A.’s The Roxy as well as an appearance at the 2014 Austin City Limits Music Festival. See below for details.
This Is My Hand was recorded in Berlin, New York, L.A. and Worden's re-adopted hometown of Detroit with producer Zac Rae. Of her inspiration behind the album, Worden comments, “The genesis of the new album was looking at the changes that have happened in music over my career, and trying to reevaluate what it meant to me in the first place: ‘what is the value of music’ is essentially the question. In the States, the marching band is something that is done in school, so it still represents something inclusive, something that anyone can learn. I loved the communal quality and the way that drums and horns travel in large three-dimensional spaces.”
Since debuting as My Brightest Diamond in 2006, Worden has released three full-length albums, including her most recent, 2011’s All Things Will Unwind. Of the album, The New York Times praises, “…she has a keen sense of the dramatic, and a sure understanding of dynamics,” while allmusic asserts, “All Things Will Unwind finds this musical auteur at the top of her game, maturing, pushing her already broad boundaries, and brimming with imagination.”
In addition to her work as My Brightest Diamond, Worden has collaborated and performed with various musicians, artists and filmmakers, including Matthew Barney, Sufjan Stevens, Bryce and Aaron Dressner (The National), The Decemberists, Bon Iver, David Byrne, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Laurie Anderson, Matthew Ritchie, Murat Eyuboglu, Brooklyn Rider and yMusic, among others.

Melaena Cadiz returns to Brooklyn on July 20th

On July 20th at Glasslands, Melaena Cadiz returns from a full US tour to her hometown of Brooklyn to celebrate the release of the new LP, Deep Below Heaven, with a full band performance!

Out now on Wild Kindness Records, the album is now streaming in its entirety at Wondering Sound and don't miss Mikael Kennedy's directorial debut for Cadiz's beautiful lead single, "Needles River"

Early love for  Deep Below Heaven:
"The songs on Melaena Cadiz‘s new LP Deep Below Heaven, out May 20, are warm and welcoming, founded on gentle acoustic guitars, light percussion and her strong alto.”Wondering Sound"Melaena Cadiz may infuse her songs with folk, country and pop undertones, but the soft, carefully-constructed result is all her own.” Paste"New York-based singer Melaena Cadiz's rustic folk earworm…” NPR Music“…takes you down the silhoutte stricken lonely landscapes of water, roads, and misty dirt paths.”IMPOSE"Brooklyn-based singer songwriter Melaena Cadiz is a a great storyteller. This Michican native combines folk, country, and pop in her music to create scenes which showcase lonely lives across America.” Audiofemme"Listen closely, and you’ll notice that somebody’s world is collapsing.” CMT Edge “...a dreamy sort of Americana/folk.” BreakThru Radio“It’s an amazing mix of folk, pop, and country, that will remind older listeners of some of Natalie Merchant’s best.” Arena--------The tallest sky he’d ever seen.
The sense of being deep below heaven

- Sam Shepard
On June 1st, 2014 husband and wife duo, folk singer Melaena Cadiz and photographer Mikael Kennedy, will hit the road on a month-long tour celebrating the joint release of Cadiz’s album and Kennedy’s photo collection, both titled “Deep Below Heaven.” In 2012, they were both at work on their respective projects—Cadiz wrote songs from their home in NYC, while Kennedy wandered the country to shoot some of its most remote locations—and decided to combine forces. Cadiz would send Kennedy snippets of songs in progress, and he would send her images of where he was, each inspiring the other.Cadiz’s second album, which will be released on Wild Kindness Records on May 20, is a series of portraits of the people inhabiting the edges of this world—stories plucked from the American landscape using the language of folk, pop, and country. “There’s always been a cross-pollination between my songwriting and Mikael’s work,” Cadiz explained. “For a long time our work spaces at home faced each other, so one of us would find an inspiring song, image, or fragment of literature and share it with the other. When Mikael was on the road, he would send me photos of where he was, looking out at these unreal, epic landscapes, and there was a sense of peace in his photos that the characters in my songs long for.”Kennedy’s photo series is a collection of big skies and open spaces published in a newsprint zine, that give one the sense of walking alone into a new world, full of wonder and grace. “I was lying in my tent on the South Rim of Big Bend. Thunder- storms were rolling across the desert, crashing against this plateau that felt like an island. My tent was lifting off the ground in the wind. The lyrics to ‘Sharp White Teeth’ were running though my head. Melaena wrote me one day to say she’d decid- ed on an album title: ‘Deep Below Heaven,’ taken from a line in a Sam Shepard book I’d given her. I turned and looked out and thought it’s where I was, I was standing in it.”They travel together now bringing a glimpse of the worlds they inhabited and created during that time, only to be described as ‘Deep Below Heaven’ with shows in Nashville, Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland, & Seattle with shows being added along the way.For more information visit:

The Orwells "Disgraceland" Out Today

THE ORWELLS DISGRACELAND OUT TODAYThe Late Show with David Letterman to Host The Orwells Performance Once Again June 10th NPR PREMIERES VIDEO FOR ALBUM TRACK "  NORTH AVE."

Orwells Album Press Photo
Chicago's five-piece rock act The Orwells new album  Disgraceland  is out today on Canvasback Music. The album, which can be streamed in its entirety via RollingStone.com , features the track "North Ave." which premiered via  NPR  yesterday. In addition, the band will make a triumphant return to The Late Show with David Letterman on June 10th, where the band made their TV debut in a now epic performance this past January. Watch that performance here. The Orwells will tour throughout North America in support of their new release, including a stop at Brooklyn's Rough on June 9th. The Orwells also have plans for some big hometown happenings starting with a free in-store performance at Chicago's Reckless Records on June 16th, an Underground Lounge at JBTV on the 17th and a free album release party at Shuba's on the 18th. Complete list of dates below.

Disgraceland follows the 2013 release of lauded Other Voices and Who Needs You EPs and 2012's full-length Remember When. The Orwells' first three releases were made with a youthful energy and unabashed love for rock & roll which set the stage for the band's new album, Disgraceland. "I'm not that old but I'm getting pretty wise" -- a sentiment within the early seconds of The Orwells' new album, Disgraceland, pretty much sums up the eleven tracks that follow it. In guitarist Matt O'Keefe's words, "We wanted to capture what the last 18-20 years of our lives were like, in this anywhere USA suburb." Recorded last fall at studios in London, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Woodstock, NY, the album was produced with the help of Chris Coady (Smith Westerns, Beach House), Dave Sitek (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santigold, TV On the Radio) and Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys).

The Orwells are cousins Mario Cuomo (vocals) and Dominic Corso (guitar), twins Grant (bass) and Henry Brinner (drums), and Matt O'Keefe (guitar)

Robyn Hitchcock Announces New Record; Shares New Song

ROBYN HITCHCOCK MEETS THE MAN UPSTAIRSSHARES FIRST SONG, "THE GHOST IN YOU"
UPCOMING COLLECTION PRODUCED BY THE LEGENDARY JOE BOYDINCLUDES NEW ORIGINALS, CLASSIC COVERS, AND LITTLE KNOWN GEMSBY SUCH ARTISTS AS ROXY MUSIC, THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS, AND MORE;
ALBUM FEATURES EXCLUSIVE COVER ART BY GILLIAN WELCH;THE MAN UPSTAIRS ARRIVES ON AUGUST 26
LISTEN TO A 4TH GRADE MUSIC CLASS INTERVIEW HITCHOCK
Yep Roc Records has announced the new album from psychedelic folk troubadour Robyn Hitchcock. The Man Upstairs will be available on August 26. The first song Hitchcock is sharing from the album is a stunning version of the Psychedelic Furs classic "The Ghost in You." A 4th grade music class from Hillsborough, NC, interviewed Hitchcock for their weekly WOCS podcast. An excerpt from the podcast can be heard HERE.
The Man Upstairs sees Hitchcock uniting with legendary producer Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, Fairport Convention) for one of the most unique recordings of his already quite idiosyncratic career. Rather than simply record a new selection of songs, Boyd suggested what he called 'a Judy Collins album' such as Elektra would have released in 1967 - part well-known favorites, part personal discoveries, and part originals. The multi-tiered approach offered Hitchcock the rare opportunity to record as a performer, not "just another singer-songwriter laying their freshest eggs."
Thus, modern standards like Roxy Music's "To Turn You On," The Doors' "The Crystal Ship," and The Psychedelic Furs' "The Ghost In You" are interlaced with lesser-known gems from such pals as Grant-Lee Phillips ("Don't Look Down") and I Was A King ("Ferries"), the latter featuring harmony vocals and guitar from the Norwegian indiepop combo's own Anne Lise Frøkedal. Meanwhile, new Hitchcock originals like "Trouble In Your Blood" and "Comme Toujours" stand among his most fragile and heartfelt, his stark vocal and guitar cast by Boyd against simple, autumnal backing from longtime collaborators Jenny Adejayan (cello), Charlie Francis (piano), and the aforementioned Frøkedal (harmonies).
"I've always wanted to make a folk record produced by Joe Boyd," says Hitchcock, "and now I have: thank you, universe!"
Recorded and mixed at London's Snap Studio in just one short week last October, The Man Upstairs further comes adorned with delightfully macabre cover art painted exclusively for the album by GRAMMY®-winning singer/songwriter Gillian Welch.
Hitchcock will herald The Man Upstairs with a pair of intimate live dates slated for June 20th at Santa Monica's famed McCabe's Guitar Shop and Seattle's Columbia City Theater on June 23rd. A complete North American live itinerary will be announced soon  - for more, please see www.robynhitchcock.com/tourdates.
From plugging in Bob Dylan's electric guitar at his infamous 1965 performance at the Newport Folk Festival to his stewardship of an array of folk heroes - including Vashti Bunyan, Shirley Collins, and The Incredible String Band - Joe Boyd has been intimately involved in some of music's milestone moments.  Young Robyn first encountered Boyd almost five decades back, the words "Produced by Joe Boyd" emblazoned on album after album in his teenage canon. The two eventually made a more human - though no less personal - acquaintance in 1985 as Boyd helmed R.E.M.'s Fables of the Reconstruction. A relationship developed and in 2012, they toured the US with "Robyn Hitchcock & Joe Boyd - Live & Direct From 1967," coupling musical performances with Boyd's reminiscences of a time when giants walked among us.
Hitchcock's 20th solo studio recording - give or take the odd outtake, demo, and rarities compilations - The Man Upstairs arrives hot on the heels of 2013's Love From London, which received some of the most glowing notices of Hitchcock's storied career. "One of his recent best," decreed Rolling Stone. "10 songs of chiming folk-rock grace and slippery black humor in which apocalypse falls gently." BBC Music applauded "(Hitchcock's) customary playfulness in dissecting matters of the heart and cerebellum," while MOJO noted "Love From London once again shows (Hitchcock's) ability to reconcile the sheer peculiar wonder of being alive." "Hitchcock catches you - leaves you breathless - with his ability to compel," declared American Songwriter. "He has pared the whimsy to go for a deeper type of magic realism, one that is serious rather than humorous. He seems to be out there - mining the subconscious - while still firmly aware of pop songcraft and the real world as we live it." "Why does the world need Robyn Hitchcock?" wondered Consequence of Sound. "Well, without him, who would give us songs to boogie to while the world collapses around us?"

About Avi Buffalo’s At Best Cuckold:
Avi Buffalo’s eponymous debut hit the ground running in 2010, and for good reason: While their Millikan High School classmates were preoccupied with quaint and youthful pursuits, the musicians behind Avi Buffalo were busy making an off-kilter pop gem that eventually bowled over NME, The AV Club, Pitchfork, the BBC, and numerous other outlets on both sides of the Atlantic whose tastes are respected by the general public. Like a lot of kids their age, the Buffaloes celebrated the end of high school in Europe, but instead of visiting the Louvre and Buckingham Palace, their overseas journeys took them to the festival stages of Reading, Leeds, Glastonbury, the Pavement-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in Minehead, and beyond.

And thus began the three-year journey that led to the creation of At Best Cuckold, a stretch of time that resembles the one that framed its predecessor. While transitioning from teenager to twenty-something and traversing the interpersonal wilds that accompany that age, Avi kept playing music (even picking up a new instrument every now and again), collaborated with and produced many friends (including Kevin Litrow’s N.O.W. project and Douglas James Sweeney’s Arjuna Genome), started DJing, and listened to a bunch of good music. He also wrote new songs, and by the time 2013 rolled around, it was time to begin capturing his latest sparks...The end result is a quirky yet comforting set of songs driven by refined pop songcraft and sneaky moments of grandeur that stick in the brain (read more at Sub Pop).

Propaganda, the controversial film smuggled from North Korea

PROPAGANDA to be released on July 22
The controversial, worldwide sensation smuggled from North Korea WINNER of Founders Grand Prize from Michael Moore for Best Picture at the Traverse City Film Festival
Controversial to its core, this hard-hitting anti-Western propaganda film looks at the influence of American culture on the rest of the world from a North Korean perspective, and has been described as 'either a damning indictment of 21st Century culture or the best piece of propaganda in a generation.'
Propaganda  signals the birth of a new genre-bending generation of film maker. Using the 'fake North Korean propaganda' found-footage device, Director Slavko Martinov, (who just spoke at a recent TED conference) parodies its language and stylings, before targeting the mountain of hypocrisies and contradictions that make up the modern Western narrative. In doing so, the film delivers a devastating blow to those who might be quick to laugh at 'backward' ideologies before considering how political and cultural trends have weakened Western claims to the moral high ground.
In chapters with titles including "Rewriting History," "Creating Ideas and Illusions" and "The Cult of Celebrity," the film takes aim at advertising, war, TV, consumerism, religion, censorship, celebrity and historical revisionism - all sources of, or the result of state propaganda - in a way that is thoroughly North Korean, alarmingly authentic and disturbingly precise.
Propaganda  has caused an international incident involving the NIS (South Korea's CIA), the Catholic Church, Homeland Security and the FBI. In fact, Martinov and his crew to this day stand accused of being North Korean agents by the South Korean government. If the best way to see our selves is through the eyes of another, then this jaw-dropping film will hold a mirror to Western media, politics and history, and the propaganda that has shaped them. Winner: Best Picture - Traverse City Film Festival

Joan As Police Woman Shares Video For “Witness”

Joan As Police Woman Shares Video For "Witness" via Clash
The Classic  out now on PIAS Recordings

WATCH: "WITNESS" via CLASHWATCH: "THE CLASSIC (FT REGGIE WATTS)"WATCH: "HOLY CITY"
"contains some of her most ebullient songs yet" – Brooklyn Vegan
"full of smoky vocals and slinky melodies that are unmistakably hers" – Allmusic.com
The video for "WITNESS" is directed by Ben Reed who has worked with Joan previously, on videos for "The Magic" and "Chemmie". Beautifully shot in black and white, the video is a clever play on word association and sign language.
Having been on the road with her band since March, Joan is finally back home in NYC but barely has time to catch her breath before heading off on tour to Japan, Australia, mainland Europe and then back to the UK for festivals and headline shows in August.More info on The Classic below:
"I'm in the best place I've ever been in my life," declares Joan Wasser, and she's just recorded the album that proves it. The Classic, the fourth album of originals by the uniquely charismatic artist known as Joan As Police Woman, builds on the creative impetus and success of its 2011 predecessor The Deep Field.
As ever Joan strives to create music rooted in an intimate, elemental and uplifting brand of soul combined with her own unique serene, torch-singing temperament, but whereas melancholy was a principle feature of Joan's earlier work, this time there's a more liberated feel than ever before.
Famously a key member of Antony Hegarty's Johnsons and Rufus Wainwright's band until she began making her own records, Joan was inspired by their combined piano balladry while infusing it with her own stripped-down-soul and torch-song approach. Her 2006 album debut Real Life was followed by To Survive (2008), written in the aftermath of her mother's death; in 2009, she released an interim covers album simply called Cover, before The Deep Field confirmed Joan had started a full recovery and was determined to beat the blues. Which takes us to The Classic, where Joan reaches even further toward the light.
