Gavin Friday shares new track “Stations of the Cross”
Gavin Friday has shared a new track titled “Stations Of The Cross”. The song is taken from his highly anticipated new solo album Ecce Homo. Out 25th October via BMG, the new album – which was produced by Soft Cell’s Dave Ball and Michael Heffernan – marks his first since 2011’s “Catholic” and was recently announced alongside it’s title track and an eponymous digital EP featuring two remixes and an instrumental version of the track.
As with the prior single “Ecce Homo“, Friday has teased the new track with mysterious posts written in Ogham – an ancient runic language that was used in Ireland and parts of the UK between the 5th and 9th centuries – alongside an image of a crown of thorns.
Whereas “Ecce Homo” spotlighted the pulverising and triumphant sound of the album, the pulsing and doleful new excerpt “Stations Of The Cross” leans more into gothic, ballad territory with ambulating industrial rhythms, pensive horns, and palpitating synth work. Thematically, it is a tormented love song, centred around a relationship caught in a viscous circle. The track is dedicated to the late great Sinead O’Connor, who was a friend of Gavin.

The album Ecce Homo will be released on 25th October via BMG on ltd. edition transparent blue vinyl as well as a deluxe CD package featuring an exclusive 28-page booklet and bonus material. The album will be available everywhere digitally including two exclusive remixes.

We performed it in Paris, Ibiza, and London over the summer, and every time it felt like the music wrapped the room in something magical.

YouTubeLast month, Kramer announced a return-to-form, once again revisiting his beloved spoken-word discipline, in collaboration with an incredible roster of artists. Out today via Shimmy-Disc, POE "To One in Paradise" (for Hal Willner) is a collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s immortal poems read by musicians, poets, actors & one magician, dedicated to the memory of Kramer's great friend and fellow traveller on the musical roads least taken, Hal Willner (1956 - 2020).
Kramer has curated an eclectic collection of voices to render living vision to Poe's entombed words, and draped them in a series of ambient musical landscapes evocative of a world long lost to time. What he offers us here is nothing less than a fully imagined symphony of voice, sound and memory.
The music he created that accompanies each reading keeps the light shining on the performer, polishing the space between the poetry and the performance. As a fitting coda, an archival recording of Allen Ginsberg vividly reciting “The Bells” closes out the album.
The track being highlighted today is “To One In Paradise” read by Joan As Police Woman. The reading features music by Kramer & Joan Wasser, created by their 4 hands on one piano. Also accompanying the track is a piece of ambient cinema by Kramer. “To One in Paradise” is an immemorial trip down memory's vanishing cobble-stone lanes.

Kramer is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, record producer, ‘ambient-cinema’ filmmaker, and artist. Celebrated as a collaborator and champion for some of the most boundary-pushing artists of his generation via his NYC-based label Shimmy-Disc, Kramer has played bass guitar with Ween, Butthole Surfers, Half Japanese, B.A.L.L., and numerous other bands.
He revived Shimmy-Disc in 2020 via Joyful Noise Recordings, after being named their 2020 Artist-in-Residence.
In 2023, Shimmy-Disc released Kramer's collaborative LP with ambient music pioneer Laraaji, entitled Baptismal. Also in 2023, Shimmy-Disc released a six-EP limited-edition wooden box set of 7" vinyl EPs featuring new collaborations with Britta Phillips (Luna), Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers), Rob Crow (Pinback), Jad Fair (Half Japanese) & Danielson, and with David Grubbs (Gastr Del Sol) as "Squanderers".
So far in 2024, Shimmy-Disc will release three of Kramer's planned collaborative LPs. The first with Pan American (Mark K. Nelson) entitled Reverberations of Non-Stop Traffic on Redding Road, released in March and most recently, The Walk with Kato Hideki, released in August.
2024 will conclude with first LP from SQUANDERERS, a trio featuring guitarists Wendy Eisenberg and David Grubbs, and 2025 will begin with our second release from the amazing archives of electronic music pioneer BRUCE HAACK, "THIS OLD MAN". Originally released in 1975, this LP has never been reissued, until now. Re-Mastered by Kramer and available in a limited-edition of 100 hand-numbered black vinyl LPs via mail-order only, or in stores on clear vinyl. Release Date: Feb. 28, 2025.

New York City’s Shower Curtain, the four-piece band led by Brazilian-American artist Victoria Winter, are excited to finally share their debut album, words from a wishing well, out now via Angel Tapes/Fire Talk Records. A completely dialed-in record of experiences between Brazil and New York, the band’s debut boasts unexpected but relatable hooks, spaciously arranged distortion creeping beneath Winter’s airy vocals and their ability to capture the past in a way that feels refreshingly modern. To celebrate the release of their long-awaited debut, the hilariously anxiety-inducing official music video for “bed bugs” is out now.
"It feels so exciting to debut to the rest of the world what we have been working on for almost three years at this point,” bandleader Victoria Winter says. “I have learned to lean on my bandmates to create this beautiful project, and it tells the story of learning to collaborate and work with each other. I’m excited to go on tour following this record and I can't wait for what’s to come. It's been my dream to work with the Fire Talk team and they have been so supportive as well, it feels so special to have worked with them in this release."
Co-directed by cinematographer Nikos Campbell and Winter, “bed bugs” tells the story of a bed bug infestation where bugs crawl all over the house, leaving bite marks and paranoia behind. A life-sized bed bug is revealed, who slithers and creeps around the house, instilling the specific kind of fear that only invasive insects can bring. On the song and the accompanying video, Winter says, “‘bedbugs’ encapsulates the direction that we are going in - it feels bold, and like we are taking risks. The same can be said for the video that accompanies it, I always knew I wanted to do a horror movie with this song, just because of the nature of the lyricism, which is a greater metaphor for just being obsessed with something and always finding something new to worry about.”

Today’s album arrives after last month’s insomnia-inspired single, “benadryl man” and the recently released “you’re like me.” The announcement of words from a wishing well was heralded by Shower Curtain’s first song of the year, “wish u well.” Arriving with a music video directed by Trevor Scholl and starring Brenna Gonzalez from Julia’s War band Lola Star, the track served as an ode to the early bedroom pop beginnings of the project. Together, these singles showcase how the band has grown leaps and bounds through break-up musings and layered guitar riffs.

The band’s upcoming debut follows their 2021 EP Something Instead and 2023 singles; “meus passos,” with Brazilian group terraplana, and “edgar,” the final track of words from a wishing well that Stereogum called “a lingering blast of poignant shoegaze” and Paste Magazine praised as “a gorgeous, reflective arc of survival and loss and hope.”
Last year’s singles represented a significant milestone in the band's journey, signaling a bold artistic evolution for the band from bedroom pop to sludgy rock after a two-year hiatus. Beginning as Victoria’s solo project, the band has found a home within Brooklyn’s emerging slowcore and shoegaze scene, adding members Cody Hudgins (Crate) on bass, Ethan Williams (Punchlove) on guitar, and Sean Terrell (Fasting) on drums.
Later this month, Shower Curtain will embark on their first full-length headlining tour across North America, making stops along the East Coast and down South before heading midwest with fellow New York band MX LONELY. The tour will culminate in an album release show presented by Stereogum at local haunt TV Eye with support from a to-be-announced special guest, My Transparent Eye and Many Shining Windows.

TDE artist Ab-Soul has announced Soul Burger, his first project since 2022's acclaimed Herbert. Along with the announcement, he’s released a new song and video for "All That" featuring Jason Martin (formerly known as Problem) and Thirsty P. The track was produced by frequent TDE collaborators Rascal and TaeBeast. The video showcases stunning cultural photographgy interspersed with scenes of Soul and company.
With Soul Burger, Ab-Soul pays tribute to his childhood best friend, Doe Burger, who passed away in 2021. Doe always encouraged him to create more upbeat music for fans to dance to at shows, so this project is both an homage to him and a reflection of the music he inspired Soul to make. Throughout the mixtape, Doe serves as a narrator, urging Soul to persevere despite his challenges. The album will also include the previously released single "Squeeze 1St 2."
Ab-Soul is known for challenging rap’s conventional narratives with his deep, thought-provoking lyricism and distinctive style. Joining Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2007, he became part of the revered Black Hippy collective alongside Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Kendrick Lamar. His music often delves into personal hardship, philosophy, and social issues. His journey has been marked by significant struggles, including being diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome at age 10, which severely impacted his vision and skin. The 2012 loss of his best friend and longtime girlfriend also deeply influenced his music, inspiring his breakout track "The Book of Soul" on his sophomore album Control System. After a six-year hiatus, Ab-Soul returned with Herbert (2022), an album that showcases his vulnerability as he reflects on mental health, grief, resilience, and self-discovery—earning praise from both fans and critics for his growth and authenticity.

The Armed have released their new EP, EVERLASTING GAZE—an extension of their critically acclaimed LP PERFECT SAVIORS. The EP features three new tracks (which were hidden in plain sight via a URL printed inside every PERFECT SAVIORS jacket), alongside remixes of “Sport of Form,” the lead single from Perfect Saviors, with reimaginations from IDLES, Water From Your Eyes, and Model/Actriz.

EVERLASTING GAZE serves as the Side C of PERFECT SAVIORS and the final chapter of the ULTRAPOP trilogy (ONLY LOVE / ULTRAPOP / PERFECT SAVIORS)—a series that has explored both form and meta-context to reflect the collapse of the "authentic niche" in the information age. These final three songs serve as the conclusion to a decade of pop culture commentary by the world's least popular band—and a cleansing for what lies ahead.

The new album sees Fantastic Negrito encapsulating the inimitable elements of his celebrated body of work to date, from hard-hitting distorted guitar riffs to melodic and expressive ballads, all fueled by the unexpected twists that have become his trademark. The album stands as perhaps Fantastic Negrito’s most personal thus far, exploring family, deception, and the human desire to hide the true self as he dives deep into one of the oldest conflicts in human history, the struggle between father and son. Beginning at a young age, Negrito was served untruths by his father. A made-up last name, a fabricated ancestry, and a fake Somali accent. Why lie? Why create this false narrative? Those are the questions Negrito had to ask himself and the questions that lie at the heart of Son of a Broken Man.

Son of a Broken Man was first heralded in early September with the premiere of two album highlights, “California Loner” and “Runaway From You.” These were followed by the siongs, "I Hope Somebody's Loving You," and "Crooked Road." ABOUT FANTASTIC NEGRITO:
Born Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, the story of Fantastic Negrito is a testament to the transformative power of music and the importance of resilience. By now much has been made of Negrito’s unique story – his early years growing up in an orthodox Muslim household, the doomed major label deal that turned him off of the music industry altogether, the near-fatal car crash that permanently damaged his guitar-playing hand—as well as the remarkable redemption arc that began in 2015, when he won the first-ever NPR Tiny Desk Contest. In the years that followed, Negrito would go on to take home three consecutive GRAMMY® Awards for “Best Contemporary Blues Album,” share stages with everyone from Sturgill Simpson to Chris Cornell to Bruce Springsteen, collaborate in the studio with the likes of Sting, E-40, and Tank and the Bangas, perform on countless worldwide headline tours and at such festivals as Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Newport Folk, and Byron Bay Blues, and found the Revolution Plantation, an urban farm aimed at youth education and empowerment. Fantastic Negrito’s fifth studio album, 2022’s White Jesus Black Problems, marked the acclaimed first release on his own Storefront Records label. 2023 saw the release of Grandfather Courage, an acoustic reimagining of White Jesus Black Problems recorded with his touring band and hailed by PopMatters as “a compelling, affecting work of acoustic blues and roots music, speaking to the deep currents of blues as an American art form.”
