“Iconic…characterized by an admirable confidence and a fuck you attitude that they’ve mastered over the years…they balance bringing fun and laughter into the world in the face of so much evil and terror, and on a sonic level, find a balance between maintaining a sound and harnessing experimentation”––NEW NOISE MAGAZINE
Amyl and The Sniffers commemorate the release of their hotly anticipated third album Cartoon Darkness, out now via B2B Records / Virgin Music Group, with the announcement of a full scale North American headlining tour. Beginning March 25, 2025 in Portland, OR, the Australian garage punk quartet will bring the unmistakable roar that “has begun to speak on behalf of a generation of people seeking stability and joy in a world of increasing imbalance” (PASTE) to more than 20 cities spanning the U.S. and Canada before concluding May 23, 2025 in Nashville, TN.
The new dates will mark the return of Amyl and The Sniffers to North America for the first time since their triumphant summer spent slaying crowds from sold-out headlining club and theater gigs––including a two-night blowout at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles––to stadium shows as special guests of Foo Fighters, which included stops at New York’s Citi Field and Boston’s Fenway Park. Amyl and The Sniffers will head out next month on their sold out UK and EU tour, which will feature their biggest ever headline show at London’s Alexandra Palace. Tickets are on sale November 1 at 10am local time. Sign up for presale access today at amylandthesniffers.com/shows. Presales start Wednesday October 30 at 10am local time. Chat Pile Reveal “Frownland” Music Video, Embark on North American Tour
Chat Pile Reveal “Frownland” Music Video,
Embark on North American Tour
New LP Cool World is out now on The Flenser
[image error]Photo by Matthew Zagorski
Oklahoma City noise rock quartet Chat Pile released their sophomore LP Cool World just shy of three weeks ago and now, the band is getting ready for leg one of their North American tour spanning October 31 through November 22. The tour kicks off with two hometown shows in Oklahoma City then traverses the midwest into Canada, followed by a string of east coast shows. The second leg of the tour runs February through March around Texas and along the west coast of the U.S. and Canada— check out all tour dates listed below.
Today, Chat Pile have shared a music video for Cool World single, "Frownland." Director Matthew Zagorski comments on the video treatment: "When I first heard this song, I heard despair, so I wanted the video to start off troubling. The main character laying there in the rubble of his old life, digging through the ruins of what used to be. I was dealing with extreme feelings of loneliness and not feeling worthy at the time of piecing together this video and it really bled into the narrative."

Besides being the name of a largely forgotten (and panned) 90s film, Cool World makes for an apt title of Chat Pile’s sophomore full-length record. In the context of a Chat Pile record, the words are steeped in a grim double entendre that not only evokes imagery of a dying planet but a progression from the band’s previous work, moving the scope of its depiction of modern malaise from just “God’s Country” to the entirety of humankind.
The proverbial thread tying all of the experimentation on Cool World together is the depth to which Chat Pile dissects the album’s theme of violence, and the record itself is apocalyptically bleak. Sure, Chat Pile’s debut album was plenty disturbing with its B-movie-inspired interpretation of a “real American horror story”; what Chat Pile depicts on Cool World is unsettling not just from its visceral noise rock onslaught, but from depicting how all sorts of atrocities are pretty much standard parts of modern existence.

Bryan Ferry Releases 'Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973 - 2023

RETROSPECTIVE: SELECTED RECORDINGS 1973 – 2023
OUT NOW VIA BMG
81-TRACK COLLECTION CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF BRYAN FERRY’S MUSIC, INCLUDING BRAND NEW SONG STAR, HIS FIRST NEW MUSIC IN OVER A DECADE

RETROSPECTIVE: SELECTED RECORDINGS 1973-2023
Today, Bryan Ferry has released Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 via BMG. The 81-track collection is the first ever career-spanning release to fully explore and celebrate the depth of Bryan Ferry’s work as a solo artist, spanning a period of over 50 years of music and 16 solo albums. Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 is OUT NOW and available HERE .
The 81 tracks that make up this collection illustrate an adventure in music like no other. A peerless story in songwriting that has been unfolding for more than 50 years will now be celebrated in this kaleidoscopic compendium of Bryan Ferry’s music. The release is a celebration of the performer who has carved out a place as a master modern interpreter of song via a dizzyingly inventive series of cover versions that range from Bob Dylan to Amy Winehouse, Rodgers and Hart to the Velvet Underground via Tim Buckley, Shakespeare, sea shanties and Sam and Dave. Then there’s the songwriter who, in singles like 1985’s ‘Slave To Love,’ has crafted music that stands amongst the defining recordings of their era, yet sound unique and timeless to this day. There’s the futurist conjuring vortices of electronica; or the passionate revivalist, presenting songs and styles from the 1920s and 1930s as if they were the hot sound of tomorrow calling. There’s the figure out on the pulsing nightclub dancefloor, tripping the light fantastic; and the guy who wants only to be alone, slipping away into brooding, bittersweet backstreets where everything turns neon and noir.
The release of Retrospective follows the highly acclaimed singles ‘She Belongs to Me’, a haunting reimagining of Bob Dylan's classic track, ‘Star’, an anxious, darkly gleaming slab of pounding post-techno featuring performance artist Amelia Barrett, described by Uncut as “smoldering brilliance”, and ‘I Thought’, a beguiling and resonant collaboration with former Roxy Music band mate Brian Eno.
Already garnering great critical acclaim, Retrospective has been hailed by MOJO for showcasing how “Ferry’s art was never about surface perfection, but always in what lies beneath”. Classic Pop describes Ferry as “consistently taking risks”, while Classic Rock calls the collection “a mighty big entry point” to his career. Uncut praises the release as “enlightening”, “sublime”, and filled with “extraordinary music”, noting that Ferry is "still alert to the sound of tomorrow calling".
Five decades ago, the Roxy Music phenomenon exploded in a technicolour flash of pop, high art, outré fashion and glamour, asserting band leader Bryan Ferry as one of the most vital and exciting songwriters British music has ever seen. During this ultra-prolific period, in 1973, Ferry launched his solo career in parallel to Roxy Music. His first release, an audacious remodelling of Bob Dylan’s apocalyptic 1962 anthem ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,’ signalled the dawn of Ferry’s status as one of the great modern interpreters of song, in tandem with his own peerless songwriting and composition. Fast forward to 2024 and Bryan Ferry returns to the Dylan songbook anew. ‘She Belongs To Me’ is rendered in a beautifully rough-edged style balancing shades of the Velvet Underground against the most prominent Ferry whistling solo since Roxy Music’s 1981 rendition of John Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy.’
Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 brings together, for the first time, Bryan Ferry’s classic recorded output with Island Records, Polydor, Virgin, E.G. Records and BMG, and features two brand new recordings. The album is in multiple formats including a 5CD deluxe box set featuring 81 songs, accompanied by a 100-page hardback book containing extensive new liner notes, rare and unseen photographs and imagery. A 2LP gatefold edition presents The Best Of Bryan Ferry, containing 20 songs pressed to black vinyl with variants including a green/blue vinyl pressing and a clear vinyl pressing. A 1CD version also features the same 20 songs and a booklet containing liner notes and photographs. An 81-track edition of the album is released digitally, including a brand-new song titled ‘Star’ - Bryan Ferry’s first new music release in over a decade.
The 5CD deluxe box set is curated across five stages, with each disc devoted to a different aspect of Bryan Ferry’s career. ‘Disc One: The Best Of Bryan Ferry’ presents 20 essential tracks. World-devouring singles like ‘Slave To Love’, ‘The 'In' Crowd’ and ‘Let's Stick Together’ - songs that are woven into the fabric of British music and remain abidingly popular.
‘Disc Two: Compositions’ examines the 1977-2014 period, and how Ferry’s craft has evolved. The unfolding narrative of ‘Can’t Let Go’ and the deep mood of ‘The Only Face’, like many of Ferry’s songs, both share a sense of being out in the world, endlessly roaming main drags and backstreets. Elsewhere the sashay of ‘Limbo’ and ‘Loop De Li’ spotlight elements of Ferry’s work that remain unchanged - always keeping one eye on the dancefloor. His great constant theme, however, is love and its costs, viewed from different angles. Three of his finest recordings on the subject feature here in ‘When She Walks In The Room’, ‘I Thought’ and ‘Reason Or Rhyme’, each equally beguiling and deeply resonant.
‘Disc Three: Interpretations’ celebrates the remodelling side to Ferry’s artistry. His remakes of the Velvet Underground’s ‘What Goes On,’ Sam and Dave’s ‘Hold On, I’m Coming’ and Otis Redding’s ‘That’s How Strong My Love Is’ see Ferry exploring the past as if it were now, roaming genres and presciently sending up a signal for the post-punk generation to receive years later - that the music remains all up for grabs.
‘Disc Four: The Bryan Ferry Orchestra’ explores the conceptual project that Ferry began with 2012’s The Jazz Age album, reimagining music from across his own repertoire as if it had been recorded nine decades earlier by one of the great early jazz combos. Ferry doesn’t sing on The Jazz Age, but reappears in a new light. With his voice and lyrics removed the listener’s attention is focussed onto his gift as a composer. Ferry refined this concept across two further collections, 2018’s Bitter-Sweet and 2013’s The Great Gatsby: The Jazz Recordings - featuring reworkings of Roxy Music’s ‘Love Is The Drug’ and Amy Winehouse’s modern classic ‘Back To Black’ for the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 cinematic release, The Great Gatsby.
‘Disc Five: Rare and Unreleased’ gathers B-sides, extras, curiosities and outtakes. A shimmering remake of Roxy Music’s ‘Mother Of Pearl’ recorded in the early-1990s during the Horoscope / Mamouna sessions features backing vocals from the great Ronnie Spector. ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ is bolstered by Elvis’s original rockabilly bandmates Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana, recorded for 2001’s Sun Records tribute album, Good Rockin’ Tonight. Elsewhere Ferry’s celebratory take on ‘Whatever Gets You Thru The Night,’ John Lennon’s ramshackle secular hymn of 1974, was begun in 1995 for a Lennon tribute planned by Yoko Ono that was never released. Ferry re-worked the track in 2010 as a bonus addition for the Olympia album.
Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 celebrates Bryan Ferry’s revered songwriting talent. The track listing explores the sonic versatility and genre fluidity of his solo career – from rock ‘n’ roll to R&B dance-based grooves, piano ballads, electronica, ambient music, jazz, country, folk, blues, avant-garde and new wave. At the centre of it all is the unmistakable musicality and style of Bryan Ferry.

October 25, 2024: Following the release earlier this month of “What I Believe,” the first track from The Cowsills’ newly restored Global album (out November 8 on Omnivore Recordings), comes “She Said To Me.” The song’s release is accompanied by a lyric video that includes major elements of an early ‘90s music video, shot on VHS. That archival video, directed and edited by Ryan Sexton, captures the band energetically performing “She Said To Me” around the time the Global album was recorded. Sexton also directed videos for Global tracks "Is It Any Wonder?" and "Some Good Years." They were created for promotion of the album, the release of which was hung up for years, though they were actually screened in local movie theaters before the main feature. According to Bob Cowsill, “The budget for these was non-existent. Ryan used the band to hone his talent on and we, in turn, received three promotional videos at no cost for an album that wouldn’t come out until many years later. Somehow, it all made sense."

Global, which had been more of a rumor rather than a reality for the better part of three decades, will be legitimately released by Omnivore Recordings on November 8. The album is the stuff of rock ‘n’ roll legend: it was recorded partially at Rumbo Recorders in LA’s San Fernando Valley with the financial underwriting of a self-styled financier. Rumbo is the studio that had been established by Daryl Dragon, “The Captain” in The Captain and Tennille, and had over the years hosted sessions by a broad range of significant artists including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Guns N’ Roses, Fleetwood Mac, Dio, Megadeth and Survivor. The Cowsills, who had decided to pursue the path of a contemporary band rather than as the “oldies” act that Dick Clark had hoped to promote, were left high and dry when their backer was revealed to be a scam artist and was summarily arrested by the FBI for insurance fraud. The funds for the Rumbo sessions were theoretical at best so the album’s master tapes were not accessible to the group due to the outstanding bill for the recording.
The album will finally be available on vinyl for the first time ever next month; the CD and digital versions will include three bonus tracks that had never been heretofore released in any format. Upon finally hearing it, Greg Brodsky, founder of the popular site BestClassicBands, called it “..a revelation of pure pop greatness” and “a joyous noise spanning decades of pure pop and songcraft.” Global represents a continuation of the alliance between The Cowsills and Omnivore, which released the critically lauded Rhythm of the World, the band’s first all new album in 30 years in 2022.
With full cooperation from the band and executive producers Rock Positano and James Ferr, Global has been restored and remastered by multiple Grammy-winner Michael Graves. Bob, John, Paul and Susan Cowsill, as well as veteran bassist Robby Scharf, are joined by guests Vicki Peterson (The Bangles, Continental Drifters), Berton Averre (The Knack), Peter Holsapple (The dB’s, Continental Drifters), members of the extended Cowsills family, and even John Stamos, who was already one of the biggest names in Hollywood at the time of recording. It’s a joyous noise spanning decades of pure pop and songcraft. Updated artwork, and new liner notes from Brett Milano and Bob Cowsill bring this “lost” album’s story to life.

Anya Marina Releases New Album 'Asteroid'
ANYA MARINA RELEASES NEW ALBUM ASTEROID
ON TOUR WITH COMEDIAN NIKKI GLASER NOW

Today, acclaimed singer-songwriter Anya Marina shares her album Asteroid via Good Rope Records. With Asteroid, Marina feels comfortable in her own skin at last, excited to begin again. “Something about these songs feels young,” she says. “I’m finally learning how to take care of myself, how to say no to certain things, how to be more involved in the recording process. I wanted to make the album of my life. And I’ve done that, hands down.”
Marina previously shared “UR Good,” “Asteroid,” “Waiting for a Difference,” “Girl Shit,” and “Nothing Lasts” from Asteroid.
About Asteroid:
Asteroid is Anya Marina’s most assured work yet. Almost two decades into a distinctive career encompassing songs featured in Twilight: New Moon, Gossip Girl, and Grey’s Anatomy, an award-winning web series (Anya Marina: Indie-pendent Woman), seven albums, three EPs, and extensive touring with artists ranging from Jason Mraz to Spoon to superstar standup Nikki Glaser, the riveting performer / creative powerhouse is looking back, taking stock in song. Marina calls Asteroid “a coming-of-age story about a late bloomer. This record is about growing up, becoming fully who I am, and celebrating it.”
Newly married and recently landed in Kingston, NY, Marina crafted Asteroid’s songs from a newfound, and welcome, stability. Prior to this, she says, “I didn’t really have a safe, steady vantage point.” Although rich in adventure, Marina’s journey hasn’t been an easy one: moves from San Diego to Portland to New York City, and now Kingston, accompanied by heartbreak and emotional turmoil, well-documented in song. The assertive, wise Asteroid – her first studio album since Covid lockdown – finds her feeling “free of things that were pulling me down, getting in my way.”
Marina says all the work of getting from there to here – including sobriety, meditation, and especially long walks – has paid off: “I’ve written a lot of songs on walks, even some of the first I ever wrote,” she says. “Something about the rhythm and cadence of a walking beat.”
Most of Asteroid came fast on the heels of Marina’s relocation to the Hudson Valley. What she describes as “melodies that sound like strange Disney album B-sides, or bizzarro cousins of cabaret, classical music, Bossa nova, or jazz,” arrived quickly, “like tuning into a faraway frequency on a radio dial.” These include the hypnotic waltz “Where the Darkness Is,” on which Marina pledges to – actually prefers to – connect with someone during trouble: “Where the failure starts / I’ll meet you where things fall apart / I need it.” The beautiful, Beatles-y “London Blues” also came fast. “The entire melody of the song – even the feeling of it and how it should be sung – just arrived one day, unprompted. I’m so glad I recorded it into my phone before falling asleep.”
Whereas Marina’s previous studio release Queen of the Night (2020) was recorded piecemeal over months and featured layers of synthetic sound, Asteroid came together quickly, mostly in the Woodstock, NY barn studio of producer / guitarist Kevin Salem (Rachael Yamagata, Mike Doughty), who favors a more organic, spare approach. Acoustic guitar – Marina’s onstage weapon of choice – abounds: aggressively strummed on the rocking “Waiting for a Difference,” head-bopping funky on “Gimme Sugar,” delicately picked on the lovelorn “London Blues.”
The deft humor in much of Asteroid is no accident. Touring since 2019 with friend and former roommate, comedian Nikki Glaser, has made a big difference in Marina’s life, both personally and artistically. “Opening for Nikki has made me a better performer and songwriter,” Marina says. “I’ve learned to crystallize things better, get to the point. Playing to 2,000 comedy fans can be very daunting. It will whip you into shape fast. I love it.”
