JOHN MELLENCAMP RELEASES “DARK AS A DUNGEON” COVER IN SUPPORT OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTARY “FROM THE ASHES”

JOHN MELLENCAMP RELEASES “DARK AS A DUNGEON” COVER IN SUPPORT OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTARY “FROM THE ASHES”
“FROM THE ASHES” AVAILABLE FOR FREE ONLINE UNTIL JULY 3rd

(New York, NY June 30th, 2017) - Today, John Mellencamp journeys into the darkness of coal mining life in his reverent cover of Merle Travis' 1946 song "Dark as a Dungeon,"recorded in support of National Geographic's acclaimed documentary about the mining industry, “From The Ashes.” See link to the song  here  and official music video featuring Mellencamp here.

"From the Ashes,”  an official selection at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, explores the legacy and future of the U.S. coal industry. The film premiered June 25th on National Geographic. The film will be available commercial-free and unauthenticated via YouTube, Facebook, Hulu, Amazon, Google Play and VOD and unauthenticated on Natgeotv.com and Nat Geo TV Apps (iOS and Android devices, Apple TV, Roku and Samsung Connected TVs). See a link to the full-length film  here.

Throughout the folk tune – which Johnny Cash popularized on his iconic 1968 live album, At Folsom Prison – Mellencamp strums an acoustic guitar and sings in his signature baritone, "It's dark as a dungeon and damp as the dew, where danger is double and pleasures are few," backed by an accordion and tambourine tap. "Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines/ And it's dark as a dungeon way down in the mines."

In 1946, singer-songwriter Merle Travis wrote “Dark as a Dungeon” to describe the harsh and dangerous conditions that coal miners experienced every day. John Mellencamp recorded a special version of the song in support of the From the Ashes, a new documentary presented by National Geographic Documentary Films about the legacy and future of the coal industry in the U.S. To learn more about the film and how you can support coal dependent communities visit www.fromtheashesfilm.com

Mellencamp released his 23rd studio album, Sad Clowns & Hillbillies in April which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Americana/Folk Albums Chart, #3 on Top Rock Albums Chart and #5 on the Top Albums Chart. Don’t miss John Mellencamp on tour this summer as he heads to 22 stops across North America for his all-new Sad Clowns & Hillbillies tour kicking off on June 5th in Denver, Colorado with special guests, Emmylou Harris, tour-mate Carlene Carter and Lily & Madeleine. See the full tour itinerary and purchase tickets here.

On The CrowdRise Campaign:   America’s transition away from coal and towards cleaner energy is bringing health and economic benefits to communities across the country, with nearly 350,000 Americans working in the solar and wind industries alone. And while new jobs in clean energy are dispersed around the country, coal-dependent regions face acute job losses that harm families and depress local economies as the industry shrinks. Rather than relying on empty promises from Washington, communities are coming together to create new jobs and a sustainable future that does not rely on coal. Let’s help coal communities as America makes the transition to cleaner energy.

Join Bloomberg Philanthropies in supporting organizations working with communities and workers left behind by the coal industry to create local solutions to economic diversification. Local organizations creating diverse, resilient and sustainable economies in coal regions deserve your support. When you make a donation on CrowdRise to Coalfield Development Corporation, the Just Transition Fund, and the Western Organization of Resource Councils, Bloomberg Philanthropies will match a portion of the donation and cover all transaction fees.

About John Mellencamp
John Mellencamp’s career in music, spanning more than 35 years, has seen him transition from pop star to one of the most highly respected singer/songwriters of a generation.  Mellencamp is incredibly acclaimed; he is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a Grammy winner, a recipient of the John Steinbeck Award, ASCAP Foundation’s Champion Award, The Woody Guthrie Award and Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award and more recently, the Founders Award, the top honor assigned by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. He is also one of the most successful live concert performers in the world. In 1985, Mellencamp, together with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, created Farm Aid. The social activism reflected in his songs helped catalyze Farm Aid, the concert series and organization that has addressed the struggle of American family farmers for more than 25 years. John also wrote the title song for the upcoming film, The Yellow Birds, an American war film directed by Alexandre Moors and based on the novel The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Jack Huston, Alden Ehrenreich, Jennifer Aniston, and Toni Collette.  John continues to focus on another facet of his artistic expression: painting. His style has progressed over the years as evidenced by several gallery shows and published portfolios, and in recent years he has increased his output by completing over 100 new works. His pieces were shown in 2012 at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville under the title “Nothing Like I Planned: The Art Of John Mellencamp” and, more recently at the Butler Institute of American Art in an exhibition entitled “The Paintings Of John Mellencamp.”  “The Paintings of John Mellencamp” traveled to the Museum of Art-DeLand, Florida and John’s art was showcased at the ACA Gallery in New York. The unique instrumentation of his band and his poignant songs about everyday life in the American heartland, are widely credited with being the forbearer of the Americana/No Depression genre of rural-inflected music.  An extraordinary collaboration performed by an ensemble cast of 15 actors and a four-piece live band, comprised of members of John Mellencamp’s band is The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a musical with music and lyrics by John Mellencamp, a libretto by author Stephen King and production by T Bone Burnett. The show is being further developed in London, though King and Mellencamp are no longer as actively involved.  Mellencamp continues his journey as the walking embodiment of heartland rock; passionate, plain-spoken, and a self-proclaimed rebel.  John Mellencamp continues to live and work in Bloomington, Indiana.

Guided By Voices - 'How Do You Spell Heaven'

Guided By Voices - 'How Do You Spell Heaven'Out Friday August 11th, 2017 via GBV INC.
Listen & Share: Guided By Voices - "Just To Show You"
Guided By Voices is on a roll. You could argue, but please don't because I have a headache, that GBV is never not on a roll, that Robert Pollard's output plows past the word "prolific" like prolific is standing still in a snowbank; and that's true, but this new version of the band (Doug Gillard, Bobby Bare Jr, Mark Shue, Kevin March) has given Pollard new tools to complement his song-hammer. Thus, ergo, quod erat demonstrandum: roll.

Hot on the heels of the smothered-in-plaudits double album August By Cake comes this hot and heavy fifteen-tune long player, a melody-dense thwack to the earholes that will both energize you and deplete your body of its remaining music-appreciation enzymes. Recorded by the band in New York, and by Bob in Ohio, How Do You Spell Heaven capitalizes on the current incarnation's tour-buffed shine without sacrificing eternal GBV verities such as but not limited to: off-kilter rhythmic jolts; krazy chords; purposefully imperfect harmonies; and fragmented structures that start and stop on a coin of small denomination and go somewhere else, and quickly.

For example: Leadoff track "The Birthday Democrats" features a surfeit of pop hooks and swaggering sure-footed wordplay before dissolving like a perfect dream into Beatles-esque sound collage. "King 007" starts off like an acoustic demo from Tommy before shifting gears into a galloping riff-driven hyperspace guitar battle, before pivoting back to some kind of weirdo hybrid of the two… and then stops short just when you think you've got the thing pinned down. "Pearly Gates Smoke Machine" opens like the best thing Marc Bolan ne
There's more, much more, but you know that already. The easiest, laziest way to sum up GuidedBy Voices' latest album, the move we can't fail to resist making, is the most obvious: How do you spell heaven? Shout it from the rafters: G-B-V!

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers sell out first Hollywood Bowl show - second announced for Fri, Sept 22

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS SELL OUT FIRST
HOLLYWOOD BOWL SHOWSECOND HOLLYWOOD BOWL ANNOUNCED
FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 DUE TO OVERWHELMING DEMAND

Cedit Joel Bernstein Following the sell out of their Thursday, September 21 show at the Hollywood Bowl inLos AngelesTom Petty and The Heartbreakers have confirmed a second night at the historic venue on Friday, September 22 due to overwhelming demand. Tickets for Friday, September 22 will go on sale Friday, July 21 at 10AM PST.The performances mark the finale of the band’s extensive North American tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of their self-titled debut. Lucinda Williams will join as the band’s very special guest for both Hollywood Bowl shows. Williams has a long history with the band—the band recorded her song “Change the Locks” in 1996 forSongs And Music From She’s The One,’ she opened for the band on the “Echo Tour” in 1999 and, most recently, she performed Petty’s songs “Rebels” and “Southern Accents” when he was honored as the 2017 MusiCares Person Of The Year. The tour continues to receive widespread critical acclaim:“There are few singer/songwriters that can craft a three-chord song
with more meaning and depth than Tom Petty. His songs like ‘American Girl’
and ‘Free Fallin’ burrow themselves deep in the soul and simultaneously uplift with their simple beauty while quietly devastating as they unravel and lay bare
human failing.”—Huffington Post“I know Petty was already a revered and beloved rock hero, but from talking to musicians I’ve gotten the sense that Petty is now rightfully viewed as more of a true icon…Petty has entered into that hallowed terrain of artists whose music is the soundtrack of your life and whose two-hour sets are filled with hit songs that take you back to a place and time, capturing a moment and making you smile or wistful depending on the tune and the memory.”—Forbes“Petty and the Heartbreakers are that rare group—like the Stones, the Boss, Fleetwood Mac and just a few others—who can fill an entire concert with certified mega hits spanning decades.”—Hartford Courant“Petty essentially is classic rock music. To see him on stage is to see the
radio come to life…Petty has lived in all of the radios of our lives, even in the
age of the algorithm playlist.”—Denver Post“All-around national treasure”—Yahoo Music“One of America’s most enduring rock and roll bands.”—Fort Worth Star-Telegram“Nearly every song aroused a sing-along, some more uproarious than
others, but each evinced the durability of Petty’s songs, which, no matter their age, felt timeless or independent of the decades in which they were born…The Heartbreakers are America’s Rolling Stones: one of its most respectable, esteemed and longest-running rock acts.”—Kansas City Star“It was remarkable to consider just how well these songs have aged
through the years. So many of these classic Petty cuts seem to exist in the ether, and the very idea of a world without his music is hard to fathom.”
American Songwriter“…his band’s popularity endures, as do the hits
spanning decades.”—Chicago Tribune “It’s a testament to the depth of Tom Petty’s catalog that he can get away with playing ‘I Won’t Back Down’ (recorded by no less than Johnny Cash) and ‘Free Fallin’ (performed probably zillions of times at karaoke bars worldwide) as the sixth and seventh songs of a two-hour set. The number of living popular music performers for whom those two classics would not automatically have to be the show-closing anthems is probably in the single digits…He gave lovely introductions to the Heartbreakers, one of the best rock ‘n’ roll bands ever”—Austin American Statesman“Petty’s understated genius applies not just to his personal demeanor,
but to his music. He’s always accessible, without ever being dumb or boring.”
—Minnesota Public Radio/The Current “A two-hour-plus rock ‘n’ roll history lesson, replete with audience participation and much gratitude from the man in the spotlight.”—Atlanta Journal Constitution“Not too many rock bands are able to stick around that long, and few of the ones that do last that long can’t still pack arenas and make great albums. Petty and his bandmates still do that.”—Bradenton Herald“It’s time we start claiming ownership of the greatest American rock band of all time: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers…Petty's an icon, a Hall of Famer, one of the all-time great rock songsmiths.”—Tampa Bay Times“So why was Saturday’s concert by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers so satisfying…Because Petty has written and recorded so many songs that have become part of the classic-rock songbook.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune“Delivering a retrospective show that not only rekindled memories but also stood as a spirited tribute to a sound unbound by fleeting style.”—The Columbus Dispatch “The iconic rock collective gave a performance that served as a reminder to the crowd that they were truly in the presence of living legends.”—Red Dirt Report “Not many classic rock bands get to enjoy a 40th anniversary and even fewer are able to do so by selling out arenas wherever they play. In the case of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, they’re celebrating the occasion with as polished a set as any band you’ll see.”—Best Classic BandsAdditionally, Chris Stapleton, Peter Wolf, The Lumineers and The Shelters will perform as special guests on coming North American dates this summer. The band will also headline London’s Hyde Park as part of Barclaycard Presents British Summer Time with special guests Stevie Nicks, The Lumineers and The Shelters—this will be their only European performance of 2017. Oakland pop-rockers release shimmering new single, "Always Down" | New EP out 7/17

Oakland-based pop-rockers
The Tambo Rays
release new single
"Always Down"
“Distinguished by the two DaMert’s complimentary vocals and a shimmering, danceable style, they fondly recall the mid-’00s days of Shout Out Louds, Metric and Moonbabies.” -  BrooklynVegan
Oakland-based pop-rockers
The Tambo Rays
to release new EP, Recharge,
out July 17th via OIM Records
(Brooklyn, NY) In examining the sound, story and circumstances injected into Oakland-based indie-pop-rock band The Tambo Rays’ new EP, you would be hard pressed to come up with a more fitting title than Recharge.

The project has been on again off again since its inception in 2012 by founder Brian DaMert (guitar, vox) who soon found an immediately furthered kinship with his sister, Sara (lead vox), who joined with no previous musical experience. Joined by Greg Sellin (bass/ back vox) and Bob Jakubs (drums), The Tambo Rays would soon go on to release their debut EP, Kaleidoscope.

The momentum would be quickly interrupted, however, as the DaMert’s and Sellin found success as members of WATERS with the failing health of Brian and Sara’s father weighing on them through his passing in 2015.

“The past two years have been a healing process,” shares Brian. “Writing music was a form of therapy during these turbulent times, what came out of it was this EP.”

With Recharge, The Tambo Rays craft buoyant, sun-soaked pop-rock as Sara’s infectious vocals and energy spring out like the prismatic light structures their father was famous for creating in the 70s. The EPs five life-affirming tracks respond to the uncertainties we all face with radiant positivity and saccharine, driving pop-rock reminiscent of golden-era Blondie. The EP also marks the band’s first release with Lisa Weiss (keys) who joined in 2016.

Look for Recharge out July 17th via OIM Records and be sure to follow The Tambo Rays on any of their social channels detailed below.
