The decision to fall is harder than the fall itself
It is a joy to meet you. I don’t know how to feel about that. But already my repetitions are beginning. Do I confuse itch and ache? Here’s this helpful quiz to discover which it is, dedicated to a global team of heartbroken self-diagnosers that stretches from the threadbare social democracies in the north to the liberated markets in the west. The object of the song is love and the subject of the song is loss, or object and subject are genetically alike. This is how it sounds, the excavated voice, the archaeological dig one thousand or eight years into the future, when the bodies preserved in this auditory mud have become exemplary of their time and can no longer hurt or help each other. Then I will know how to love you and be loved by you.

The song, the lover, is interested in objectifying itself, herself. The lover objectifies herself as music. The song is a prosthesis that extends like a limb into the gut and pulls out the half-digested heart, it’s kind of gothic and kind of a shame. I learn gratefully in music that the decision to fall is harder than the fall itself, the anticipation of falling; I’m embarrassed by gravity is what I mean by “I put on weight”. The parent and the lover momentarily blurring, then some kind of travel sickness, and later I am home without remembering what happened. It used to bother me that violence is as intimate as love, but I see that you have resolved that problem by dissolving the two each into the other. Whatever is important to hide must be important. Whatever is important to forget.

Listen! I’m looking for a girl who stands 10 feet tall and has teeth like razors; I’m looking for a girl who could play the bored receptionist in the lobby of the afterlife, crossing the river of forgetting every morning and evening and back into the world of the living, where I will wait with flowers and an assortment of adult toys. Could this be you? I’m looking for a girl to affirm my reality, or cancel it. Me: I am beautifully dressed. I am a reflective surface. I am the president. Welcome to my body, my building, the border. The escalators only go up. You get down again by throwing yourself off the roof. And the song’s refrain there to catch you if you’re lucky.

Listen! Sex is work, love is work, work is sex, work is love, the magical conversion of “is” given impossible power by its delivery in music. We have travelled together these minutes and years now and I am hopeful that we have finally solved this complicated problem of how to become… Even now at my age, preserved as an example in this perfect slab of ice, can you believe I am still waiting to become real? I had a plan for how sex or at least some kind of heartfelt physical intensity could save us but I threw it off the roof along with the body and it fell into the silence that limns the edge of the song.

Inside the architecture of repetition that constitutes both a song and a life, taken objectively and not subjectively, there are resonances, assurances, bonds and securities. Sex and music stand guard over a shared silence under the noise, either because there is nothing or too much to say. It is still possible to negotiate between pain and pleasure, on the vanishing edges of pain and of pleasure, as if cutting a deal, the best deal, a beautiful deal. There are no simple binaries, and I don’t only mean gender, that’s old news; I mean that I am radiating and obsessed with the daydream hurt that I imagine your voice alone could cause me, now that I live in its zone, and I am too far gone to distinguish between sharpness and softness.

Baby, I hope one of us will hypnotise the other. Then the one less hypnotised will kill the other. Then after everyone is dead and we establish the scene, the next beginning, ending, beginning, ending. A pattern can only last its own forever and the song on repeat follows me around the city. The heart is the bloodiest organ and its rhythmic pacing and growling troubles the perception like movement at the edge of the vision mistaken for a creature. It is too early to fall in love, but all of history has happened and now there seems to be only the remainder to be arranged and rearranged. “We waited far too long.” It’s OK, everyone is here now. FEVER RAY: WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | TWITTER

High Waisted shares fiery new video for "feminist rock and roll war cry"

NYC-based rockers
High Waisted
release new video
"Firebomb"
"The new offerings build on the group’s mix of lo-fi garage rock and vintage surf music...The band has never sounded more confident." - Billboard Today, High Waisted are sharing a new video for their recently released single, "Firebomb."

The video premiered via  Uproxx  where the band shared, "This video is about the struggle to find the confidence to be your boldest self. It’s sex-positive and celebrates female strength. We also tried to play homage to powerful frontwomen of the 90’s."

Listen: High Waisted - “Free Throw” + “Firebomb”
(Brooklyn, NY) One of the most notorious bands in the NYC underground, rockers High Waisted have made a name for themselves with their wild live shows and Jessica Dye’s (lead vox, guitar) style and feminist swagger. As GQ so succinctly described, “High Waisted is a lot of things: a surf-rock band that throws raucous Lower East Side parties, friends and roommates, a group of people who stay up late and get up early. Their whirlwind energy gets channeled into creating a boisterous atmosphere just as much as into the music.”

With a Tad Kubler (The Hold Steady) produced sophomore album in the works for Spring 2018, the band rounded out by Jono Bernstein (drums) Richey Rose (bass) and Stephen Neilsen (guitar / vox) will be road testing hard this fall with a new split single in tow.

“Free Throw” and “Firebomb” saw release on September 15th as part of a split with The Coax via Little Dickman Records.

The two singles tease a blazing path forward for High Waisted, moving towards a fuller sound with Arun Bali of Saves the Day handling mixing duties.

Look for “Free Throw” and “Firebomb” out now via Little Dickman Records and be sure to follow High Waisted on any of their social channels detailed below.

See below for complete details.Something American, released in July via Glassnote Records, continues to receive widespread critical praise:“U.K. country music breakout”— Entertainment Weekly “Her phrasing and accent feel as if they’d be as at home in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York as they would on Nashville radio.”— NPR Music “Bird’s debut EP,  Something American , taps into the spirit of Americana that artists like Margo Price mine from, but what separates her from her peers across the pond is her voice. She possesses a crystalline soprano so pure that it calls to mindbubbling spring water and untouched snowfall.”— Pitchfork “A young Londoner’s spin on modern Americana and stripped-down soul, driven forward by killer pipes and an acoustic guitar.”— Rolling Stone “Bird’s lyrics tell specific stories in the manner of the best country songs”— W Magazine “The EP features simple instrumentation and production that showcases Jade Bird’s powerful vocals and impressive songwriting… She’s genuine, charming, and her passion for music and songwriting comes through powerfully in performance.”— Baeble Music Additionally, Jade made her network television debut performing her single “Cathedral” on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Watch here: http://bit.ly/2wNvFK6.Born in Hexham, U.K., Jade’s early life was spent mainly in flight as an “army brat,” with time spent in South Wales, Germany and Chesterfield. One of life’s few constants proved to be the influence of strong working women. At first via her mother and grandmother, who largely raised her, but later the female role models within the musical subcultures Jade become obsessed with: from troubled but empowering country heroines like Loretta Lynn to iconic alternative songwriters like Patti Smith, and following a thread through folk and Americana to incorporating such confessional, undiluted songwriting into pop music (Alanis Morisette’s Jagged Little Pill was a similarly early touchstone).Something American twists those genres’ themes—disillusionment, divorce, cheating, sorrow—into the realities of an independent-minded, modern British teenager in 2017. Produced by Simone Felice (The Lumineers, Bat For Lashes, Conor Oberst) with co-production and mixing by David Baron (The Lumineers, Bat For Lashes), the 5-song EP was recorded at Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck, NY and features Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, St Vincent) on drums and Sara Lee (B-52s) on bass. Laibach Release New Live Video For "Vor Sonnen-Aufgang"

LAIBACHRELEASE NEW LIVE VIDEO FOR
"VOR SONNEN-AUFGANG"

EUROPEAN TOUR BEGINS NEXT WEEK

NEW ALBUM  ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA  OUT NOWPhoto: Miro Majcen “Laibach at their most stentorian and intense…” –  The Quietus

"When a band can conjure such bleakness with such power and with so few gestures, it’s seriously impressive." –  The Stranger

"...a sonic masterpiece...a truly mind-altering journey put to record." –  Cryptic Rock
LAIBACH unveil a new live video for “Vor Sonnen-Aufgang” ahead of their European tour which starts on November 4 in Budapest and includes a London performance on November 23 – full details below.

The video, directed by Tomislav Gangl, features Laibach with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, recorded earlier this year for a very special live performance at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb, Croatia. Watch the video here.

The track is taken from Laibach’s latest album,  Also Sprach Zarathustra , out now on Mute. The music was originally composed for a theatrical production of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, based on Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical novel of the same name. Watch a teaser for the album featuring “Ein Verkündiger” and footage from the production here.

Laibach’s infamous North Korean tour (in 2015, on the anniversary of the DPRK’s liberation from Japan) is documented in Liberation Day, a film directed by Morten Traavik and described by MOJO as“a humorous, disturbing, illuminating and sometimes moving immersion into an anomalous communist mirror-world …” while Vulture Hound said, "Imagine George Orwell directing Spinal Tap and you’re somewhere close to the mark." The film is currently screening at film festivals worldwide. For the latest screenings and details go to http://www.liberationday.film/

The Museo Reina Sofía (home of Picasso’s Guernica) in Madrid is currently hosting a retrospective of Laibach art and the NSK. Laibach Kunst 1980 + Neue Slowenische Kunst 1984 - 1992: From Kapital to Capital will run until January 8, 2018. Watch a short film about the retrospective here.

On November 26, Laibach will hold a special event at the museum with a lecture and performance, re-enacting the 1983 show from the Music Biennial Zagreb.

Thirty-five years on from their genesis in the then-Yugoslavian industrial town Trbovlje, Laibach are still the most internationally acclaimed band to have come out of the former Communist countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Founded in the death year of the country’s founding father Tito, and rising to fame as Yugoslavia steered towards self-destruction, Laibach can make you think, dance and march to the same music.

Ransom Note

"Ackroyd paints with sound, revealing strange and complex tonal shifts...”
The SkinnyToday, breath-taking post-classical artist Poppy Ackroyd shares her brand new single ‘The Calm Before’ taken from her first full-length album with One Little Indian Records, Resolve – out early 2018. A classically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts).

Having played alongside giants of the genre, Hauschka and Nils Frahm, the unique musician has returned, newly signed to Bjork’s label One Little Indian Records, fresh off the back of a mini-album Sketches, and set to release her brand new self-produced full-length record - her most ambitious and progressive piece of work to date.

Poppy said: "The Calm Before is almost entirely made up of clarinet sounds. The percussion was created using layers of clicking clarinet and bass clarinet keys, starting with a looped and chopped rhythm taken from an improvisation that appears throughout."

The ground-breaking track and the new album explores life's constant challenges, and many of the songs are extremely personal to Poppy. In her own words: “Resolve is about the determination to embrace the good things in life whilst dealing with unexpected and challenging difficulties. Finding the light in the dark, facing sadness and loss head on, and developing a growing inner strength.”

In contrast to Ackroyd's previous albums, for which the artist manipulated field recordings, Ackroyd has this time employed guest players on the record, in conjunction with her trademark and unique use of unconventional studio methods. Ackroyd creates percussive textures from traditional classical instruments, and the result is almost the emulation of an entire orchestra, using very few instruments combined with the artist’s incredible production skills.

Ackroyd plays a combination of both upright and grand piano, and even plays the inside of the instrument using fingers, drumsticks and plectrums – and then arranges and multi-tracks the resulting sounds. The artist employed the same technique to record herself playing violin, pianino, harmonium and spinet, as well as record other musicians who played cello, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and hang. Describing this process, Poppy said: “With the other musicians, I asked them to explore the instrument and to create as many weird and wonderful sounds as they could. I then spent hours sifting through the recordings and choosing sounds and short percussive ideas that I could rearrange and build the track from. The opening of ‘The Calm Before’ is built out of the clicking of clarinet keys and ‘Quail’ starts with eerie sounding harmonics.”

Although a keen collaborator outside of her solo work – having created soundtracks for film, dance, physical theatre and radio – this is the first record for which Poppy has written for and employed other players, including Manu Delago (Bjork, Cinematic Orchestra, Anoushka Shankar) playing hang, Mike Lesirge (Bonobo, Andreya Triana) playing clarinets and flute, and Jo Quail on cello.

Through studying contemporary classical piano works and listening to electronic music, Ackroyd quickly developed her signature compositional style on previous albums, using contemporary pianistic ideas whilst also inhabiting the world of sound beyond the keyboard, using extended techniques to 'play' other parts of the instruments as well. The intelligent artist works by recording improvised contemporary classical piano motifs and then rearranging and manipulating these sounds digitally. The result is a fantastic fusion of acoustic and electronic in a post-classical setting.
