King Tuff shares video for first new song in 4 years- "The Other"

KING TUFF SHARES "THE OTHER" VIDEO
HIS FIRST NEW SONG IN 4 YEARS

Today, King Tuff has released a video for "The Other," his first new song in 4 years.
"It's a song about hitting rock bottom. I didn't even know what I wanted to do anymore, but I still had this urge-this feeling-like there was this possibility of something else I could be doing... and then I just followed that possibility. To me, that's what songwriting, and art in general, is about. You're chasing something, there is something out there calling to you and you're trying to get at it. 'The Other' is basically where songs come from. It's the hidden world. It's the mystery. It's the invisible hand that guides you whenever you make something. It's the thing I had to rediscover-the sort of voice I had to follow-to bring me back to making music again in a way that felt true and good."
Of the Cameron Dutra-directed video, Kyle Thomas says "it is like the song itself - representing the uphill climb of creativity."

The reproductive rights non-profit organization Lady Parts Justice (LPJ) presents, “Life is A Living Nightmare: A Telethon to Fix It” on Thursday, February 1st. The two hour hell-raising comedy extravaganza will be live streamed from an undisclosed location in Hollywood that LPJ refers to as The Feminist Sleeper Cell and will entertain while raising awareness about the current assault on reproductive rights and raise funds to help LPJ continue their work. All proceeds will benefit LPJ. Hosted by Lizz Winstead, co-creator ofThe Daily Show, co-creator of Air America, and co-founder of LPJ, “Life is A Living Nightmare: A Telethon to Fix It” will put a hilarious feminist twist on all the usual telethon conventions. In the era of #MeToo, you can expect righteous comedy, music, parlour games, and a celebrity craft corner where a few of LPJ’s favorite celebs will create one-of-a-kind items to be auctioned live during the telecast. And not to be missed Eunice P. Justice will deliver the 4th annual State Of the Uterus. And there will be a "Patriarchy" piñata because if anyone is going to smash the patriarchy why not LPJ and their Feminist Sleeper Cell cohorts!

The livestream will feature appearances by a number of celebrities including Mark Hamill (Star Wars), Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Andy Richter (Late Night andConan), Greg Proops (Whose Line Is It Anyway? Justice (State of the Uterus) and more to be announced. With this lineup, “Life is A Living Nightmare: A Telethon to Fix It” promises an outrageously funny evening that will help raise money for the important work of Lady Parts Justice supporting their boots-on-the-ground efforts to get out the vote, production of hilarious and informative videos, and work with activists to help them grow their support bases in an effort to expose anti choice politicians and help elect pro choice politicians.

About her motivation to do a telethon, Winstead says: “In a country dominated by federal, state and local politicians hell bent on bringing on The Apocalypse, LPJ’s work is more crucial than ever! The fact that we have to do a telethon to help guarantee access to reproductive care should have everyone calling-in to donate and eager to learn how to take action.”

B-sides is not really the correct term. Extra songs are just songs that didn’t really fit the concept of a 9-12 track album. Maybe because of theme or quality, but mostly because of time issues. So, what to do with the extras. They get sidelined to the b-side of singles, comps, or sometimes never released. I remember collecting all the REM singles just to hear the extras. The Stranglers had amazing extras. Roxy Music not so much. For me, beside the extra songs that didn’t make the records, it was a chance to have fun with experiments in sound. I was doing or covering some of my favorite songs like The Clean’s “Anything Could Happen” or “10 Grains” by De Artsen. I hope you enjoy.

THE DAMNED SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE TAKEN FROM 'EVIL SPIRITS' ALBUM OUT APRIL 13TH / ON TOUR IN THE UK NOW

THE DAMNED RELEASE FUTURISTIC VIDEOFOR NEW SINGLE ‘STANDING ON THE EDGE OF TOMORROW’ WATCH VIDEO

TAKEN FROM NEW ALBUM 'EVIL SPIRITS'RELEASED ON SEARCH AND DESTROY / SPINEFARM RECORDS ON APRIL 13THON TOUR IN THE UK NOW

Photo: Steve Gullick

Legendary British band, The Damned have released a video for a new single, Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow taken from their new album, Evil Spirits', scheduled for release on Search And Destroy / Spinefarm Records on April 13th. Their first new album in a decade.

The single is “an optimistic song even though it is about a dark subject, in a world obsessed by ‘self’,” explains legendary frontman Dave Vanian, who also directed the video.  “This is a cry for humanity to recognize its humanity, before it’s too late. There is a strong influence of Joe Meek here: ‘Telstar’ was a glorious song about the opportunities of the future. I’d like to think that ‘SOTEOT’ reflects a similar sentiment.”

To accompany this up-to-the-minute garage psychedelia that gallops like Scott Walker’s ‘The Seventh Seal’, amid ominous ‘dies irae’ chorale and mucho post-millennial frustration, the video depicts a vision of the future from a band whose colourful, anarchic, ever-changing vision has been propelled by an indefatigable creative motor. Quite simply, The Damned have always pushed their sound and message forwards from inception back in 1976 and have no plans to slow down in 2018.“The exploration and colonization of other worlds is something we will face in the not so distant future,” adds Vanian on his own work directing the video. “My fervent hope is that we do not take our fears and prejudices with us and repeat the mistakes we have made on our home planet.”‘Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow’ is the first serving from Evil Spirits produced by another legend from pop’s golden age – Tony Visconti, whose production on innumerable classic albums by David Bowie, T-Rex and more, mark him not only as a master of his craft, but a perfect match for The Damned.  Recorded in nine days flat, it’s an album bursting with messages, melodies, with scarcely a second of airtime wasted. 'Evil Spirits' will be available on digital download via Spotify and i-Tunes, on CD and 180g vinyl available to pre-order  HERE

The Damned kicked off on their Evil Spirits UK tour last Friday, with main support coming from fabled Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom (*except Koko), whilst support at Koko and The Forum comes from Kristeen Young.

L.A. songstress Mia Doi Todd doing a month's residency at Zebulon

Veteran singer-songwriter and Los Angeles native Mia Doi Todd will be performing at Zebulon this February as part of a Monday night residency.  With many stellar guest appearances and a Brazilian Carnaval "Slim Monday" party, these free Monday nights are a great way to celebrate the lunar new year!
Mia Doi Todd LIVEMondays in February at Zebulon2478 Fletcher Drive, 21+doors 8pm, shows 9pmFREE! with many special guests...
February 5: Jimetta Rose, Henry Wolfe & DJ Carlos Niño
February 12: Carnaval Bloco Party with Thalma de Freitas, Bloco Obini & members of Viver Brasil, and B+ on visuals and turntables
February 19: Jade Castrinos, Magic Wanderers
Mia Doi Todd is a prolific singer-songwriter and California original.  Her ninth album, Cosmic Ocean Ship (City Zen Records), was chosen by the New York Times as one of the Top Ten Records the year of its release.  After releasing primarily her own compositions, Mia took an interest in covering classic Brazilian songs and recorded Floresta at the beautiful Estúdio El Rocha in São Paulo, Brazil in 2014.         Mia has performed around the world on many great stages, including the Hollywood Bowl and Circo Voador in Rio de Janeiro.  Besides her work as a solo artist, Mia has collaborated with many musicians, including Flying Lotus, Jose Gonzalez, Dntel and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.  She contributed tracks to Michel Gondry's recent films, "Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?" and "Mood Indigo," and to the compilations, "Red Hot + Rio2" and "Red Hot + Bach."  Mia is currently composing the score and soundtrack for a contemporary film adaptation of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare.  For Mia, music is a kind of medicine, a revelation of life's sweetness, sadness, beauty and joy, all joined together in rhythm, melody and word.
After releasing Floresta, Mia decided to stay closer to her Los Angeles home and started work on a collection of cover songs in English.  The result was Songbook, Mia's second album consisting exclusively of songs written by other artists.  Songbook was produced, recorded and mixed by Mia and her husband, Jesse Peterson, with engineering assistance from Money Mark (Beastie Boys).  It features many talented musicians who call LA home, including John Herndon (Tortoise) and Alberto López (Jungle Fire, Quetzal) on drums and percussion, Gabe Noel on bass, Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, Postal Service) on electronics, Money Mark on keyboards and Sam Gendel (Inga) on saxophone.
Songbook gave Mia the opportunity to pay homage to some of the greatest English-language songwriters of the 20th Century.  The selections include several songs that Mia has been performing live for many years, such as Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" and Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," reimagined for an intimate but cosmopolitan combo.  A few more are enduring favorites from her childhood, like The Cure's "Close to Me," Prince's "When Doves Cry" and "Pancho and Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt.  The TV On The Radio track, "Careful You," is the newest of the bunch, which Mia first heard live in concert at LA's Mayan Theater, followed by "Between the Bars" by Elliott Smith, a legendary transplant to the Los Angeles scene with whom Mia had the pleasure of sharing the stage.  The collection of songs is unified by Mia's delicate voice and thoughtful sensibility and by her strong emotional connection to each finely-crafted song.www.miadoitodd.com

High Up Share New Single "Alabama To The Basement"; Debut Album You Are Here out February 23 on Team Love

High Up Share New Single "Alabama To The Basement" Debut Album You Are Here out February 23 on Team LoveSpring Tour Dates Announced photo credit: Andy Lachance
"High Up, combines Christine's soulful voice with Orenda's punk-inspired emotion-filled songs, which draw equally from Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, and The Dead Kennedys. The result is a sound that would fit on a playlist right next to Alabama Shakes and St. Paul and the Broken Bones" - Elle Magazine
"With a little bit of blues, soul and funk, High Up has created a musical masterpiece" - Popular TV

High Up will release their debut album You Are Here on February 23 via Team LoveYou Are Here can be pre-ordered now via Bandcamp. The album was produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit, Monsters of Folk) at ARC Studios in Omaha, Nebraska.Today the band revealed the album's lead track "Alabama To The Basment." The track premiered at Audiofemme along with an exclusive interview with High Up's Christine Fink. "Alabama To The Basement" can also be shared via Soundcloud. Audiofemme says, "The song is a celebration of letting go and rocking out, with clear autobiograpical vibes regarding the band’s origin story. As a kid in middle school, there were certain songs I would set my radio to wake me up to; this song has that same rush, that energy you need to fight through another day, or push through a shitty situation on your way to something better. It’s the perfect introduction to an album that that tonally runs the gambit from high energy cheer to soulful sorrow."
High Up also announced a full U.S. that will kick off in Chicago on March 1 and will include shows in Nashville, Washington, D.C., New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and more. The band will also be performing at this year's Treefort Festival and Savannah Stopover. All upcoming shows are listed below.
High Up singer Christine Fink moved to Omaha to be closer to her sister, notable singer songwriterOrenda Fink (Azure Ray, etc.) back in 2012. Down South in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Christine had been known to exercise her theatrical roots at the the local karaoke bars - and to great effect. The first time Orenda saw Christine sing at Sheffield’s Old Town Tavern her jaw dropped as she watched her sister bring the house down. After a few years in Omaha, Orenda noticed that Christine brought the house down no matter where she was singing- with people of all ages and walks of life lining up to buy her drinks and even give her requests to sing their favorite soul songs. But Christine was depressed, feeling aimless, shuffling between minimum wage jobs, and the thrill of the weekend performances wore off quickly. One night, the two began to talk about the future, and Orenda insisted that Christine should try and do what makes her happiest- perform for people. After much discussion, they decided to start High Up, a collaboration mixing elements of indie, punk and soul that showcased Christine’s powerful vocals and Orenda’s seasoned songwriting.
The band, which includes Josh Soto, Todd Fink (The Faint) and Matt Focht (Head of Femur, Bright Eyes) draws from a wide variety of influences- from Janis Joplin, (who Christine is frequently compared to at live shows from misty-eyed ex-hippies), Sam Cooke, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins to Dead Kennedys and The Birthday Party.
