Imagine being given a treasure-trove of hundred-year-old family letters (to the envy of ancestry.com habitués!).
They give voice and insights for my coming book 'Burn My Letters; Midnight Sun to Southern Cross' that nears completion.
Providence brought me to live in Sweden, directly across the Gulf of Bothnia from my grandfather's birthplace, Munsala, Finland. Spine-tingling magnets drew me to Finland to meet my father's cousin Rolf. My relatives helped me translate and uncover an ancestral story of emigrant brothers who fled Russian repression and conscription. Great-grandfather, having read that Australia is mostly desert, instructed ‘Go to the most easterly point; there must be rainfall.’ And so, our family history radiates from Byron Bay, in northern New South Wales, like beams of its lighthouse.
To uncover secrets and sift truths from myths, I've researched Finnish and Russian history, and found answers to questions like: Why did Russian military police search for Granddad's brother at Suez as he escaped in 1899?
A decade's research, writing, redrafts, polishing and editing is almost ready to submit to publishers. Watch this space!

Grandsons and I adore this book for its rollicking metre, expressive words and the twist at the end. A classic! There should be a Goodreads category for books that are reread dozens, even hundreds of times.

Quotes by Ruth Bonetti  (?)

“Strive for excellence, rather than perfection, and the audience may so enjoy your beautiful, expressive tone that they will readily forgive a few stray notes.”
Ruth Bonetti, Confident Music Performance

“A few mistakes do not a fiasco make. Professionals throw them off casually but file them away to reinvent as an endearing anecdote in later presentations. Make them part of the performance! Put them behind you and keep going whatever happens.”
Ruth Bonetti, Speak Out - Don't Freak Out

“A first recorded instance of “presentation anxiety” occurred around 1300BC when God commissioned Moses to urge Pharaoh to free the Hebrew slaves. “Please send someone else!” pleaded Moses to God. “I'm a nobody. I'm not eloquent. I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” Perhaps he stuttered.

Poor Moses. As well as having to argue with God and Pharaoh – and convince the Hebrews they should follow him to the Promised Land – he had to overcome his insecurity as a speaker.

Moses’ story reveals an important truth – the more we speak in public, the less our fears intrude and the more we grow in confidence. If Moses, the self-confessed “nobody”, could surmount his fears, so too can we.”
Ruth Bonetti, Speak Out - Don't Freak Out

“Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.”
Anton Chekhov

“To gain your own voice, forget about having it heard. Become a saint of your own province and your own consciousness.”
Allen Ginsberg

“The road to hell is paved with adverbs.”
Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

“Take a good long look at The Lord’s Prayer. It’s all ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’. There is no ‘me’, ‘I’ or ‘mine’ anywhere.”
Anne Hamilton, God's Poetry: The Identity and Destiny Encoded In Your Name

“Throughout the ancient world, naming was a sacred act. It was the word by which a child was called into his calling. It was the voice of destiny, summoning the child into his future with all its glorious promise.”
Anne Hamilton, God's Panoply: The Armour of God and the Kiss of Heaven
