Rain, Rain, GO AWAY!

Here in NY we’ve reached the point where a sunny day is a rarity and a tease, while rain is the norm.  I HATE IT! It’s depressing and totally affects my mood, my health, and my overall well being.  Not to mention, my dogs HATE THE RAIN. I have to physically drag them outside and then they stand at the door and stare at me, begging to come in.  Or in Brady’s case, he licks the water off the door while staring at me begging to come in.  What does that mean? Poop in the house.  I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Thanks for letting me vent.  Do you like or hate the rain?

Summer of Serendipity

Well here it is, the first week of June which means we are in a countdown to the first of two back to back SERENDIPITY books.

First up? A novella entitled Perfect Strangers in the HOT SUMMER NIGHTS ANTHOLOGY out July 2 with Jaci Burton, Erin McCarthy, and Jessica Clare.  I’m so excited to bring you Dr. Alexa Collins’ story.  You met Alexa in Perfect Fit and even if you didn’t read it yet, this short story stands alone.  As a bonus, Alexa’s stranger is a football hero …. what could be more yummy than that?

HotSummerNights  Passions ignite in these all-new stories from four bestselling masters of contemporary romance… Carly Phillips takes you back to the town of Serendipity, where overworked Alexa has an instant connection with a sinfully sexy football star on the dance floor. A one-night stand evolves into multiple nights when Luke decides to teach the good doctor about his own brand of fun. But when it’s time for him to leave town, will these “Perfect Strangers” be able to say goodbye for good?

Next up? In PERFECT FLING, out July 30, the middle Marsden sibling gets a happy ending … but it’s not an easy road for Erin and bad boy Cole Sanders.

Perfect Fling

Assistant District Attorney, Erin Marsden,is Serendipity’s quintessential good girl.  The only daughter of the ex-police chief, she has never made a misstep, content with her quiet, predictable life … or so she thinks.  Until Cole Sanders returns to town with heated interest in his eyes and shadows in his past.

After seven years of deep under cover work in New York City, Cole returns to Serendipity to help his aging father and to find his moral compass once more. Not to get involved with wholesome Erin Marsden.  Even as a rebellious teen, he knew a girl like Erin was off limits and that hasn’t changed.  But neither one of them can resist their off-the-charts chemistry and a one night stand brings complications neither Erin nor Cole expected.

Then Erin’s current case plunges her into a killer’s crosshairs. With more at stake than anyone knows, Erin succumbs to Cole’s take-charge attitude. As a bodyguard, he’s the best. As a lover, he’s even better.  But there’s more than the matter of Erin’s safety at stake.  And Cole must forgive the sins of his past and prove to himself – and to Erin – that he’s capable of the love and the forever she – and their baby – desperately need.

WHAT COMES AFTER SERENDIPITY’S FINEST?

I hope you’re looking forward to the next two books in the series.  I’m hard at work on PERFECT TOGETHER, Sam’s story, and when that’s finished,  I plan to write at least one more Serendipity book – TESS’ STORY – along with what I hope to be two more books in a spinoff that takes Tess away from Serendipity, where she has spent much of her life putting her bad girl teenage years behind her, and becoming the woman her brothers could be proud of – and just when she’s gotten her adult life on track, she meets a bad boy hero – the type of guy she’s always been attracted to but who she fears will make her revert to old ways  – and cost her the family she fought so hard to hold on to.  And after Tess? Well, any bad boy worth his name will have friends in need of taming …

Here’s a sneak peek of Carolina Girl (on sale June 4, 2013) to get you started:

Meg stole a glance at Sam’s profile as they left the bobbing lights of the waterfront behind. He looked good in moonlight, strong cheekbones, straight nose, sculpted lips, chiseled chin. And then there were those not-quite- dimples, the promise of humor, the flashes of empathy. Any woman could be forgiven for losing her head a little over Sam.
It wasn’t just his good lucks and his money and his charm. Okay, those things didn’t hurt. But the real appeal was his willingness to put himself out, the way he’d driven to the airport to pick her up or built that ramp for her mother, without looking for payback, without figuring the angles or calculating the cost. She liked that about him. She liked him a lot.
He had always been a friend of Matt’s, a friend of the family. There was no reason after all these years that Meg couldn’t count him as her friend, too. Her good, close friend.
But nothing more.
The clouds against the blue velvet sky were the colors of an oyster shell, purple, gray, and milky white. The last time she had been alone in the dark with Sam, he’d kissed her senseless. If he tried anything this time, she was ready. She would just say no.
But despite his words in the restaurant, he was being a perfect gentleman.
She shivered a little from the breeze and disappointment.
He slanted a look at her. “Cold?”
She wasn’t stupid. She recognized a line when she heard one. “Is this where you offer to put your arm around me to keep me warm?”
“No.” He slid out of his jacket. “This is where I give you my jacket to keep you warm.” He put it around her shoulders, smiling down at her, making her feel safe and warm and cared for. His jacket smelled like him, masculine with a hint of expensive soap. “Then I put my arm around you,” he said, suiting the action to the words.
Meg smothered a laugh. “Where did you learn this move, high school?”
He grinned back, not smug, just…Sam. “Why not stick with what works?”

What R You Reading?

I LOVE SATURDAYS! Because that’s the day I talk books!

Right now I highly recommend Kyra Davis – Just One Night – Trilogy – a very erotic, SMART, engaging series of books! Not your ordinary series read.

What are you reading?

Book Pricing

Where to begin? I’m from the old generation.  The generation before self-publishing began to lead the way in book content and pricing.  I also consider myself slower to adapt than my fellow Plotmonkeys, but I’m there now.  Better late than never.  This means that I’m working in two worlds.  I’m publishing my Serendipity novels with Berkley and my backlist on my own as eBooks, and I’m halfway through a story I began writing “just for me.”  If I’m happy with the end result, I plan to put this story up too.  This brings me to pricing.

Back before this self publishing era, we had one price – the mass market and the eBook price – were the same.  Of course, this didn’t make sense to many people who felt it shouldn’t cost the publisher the same amount of money to print an eBook, hence the price should be less.  This didn’t take into account overhead.  As eBook sales rose and mass market sales grew flat, publishers still had the same overhead – heat/AC/electric, rent, salaries, promotion, co-op, etc.  Publishers felt and many still feel perfectly justified charging the same $7.99 for a mass market as the eBook.

Bring on the self publishing revolution/evolution.  Authors put up their own books from as little as .99.  Heck, some are put up free.  Amazon KDP changed the game.  And now some publishers are recognizing that in order to find new readers, they need to change their pricing plan.  I’ve seen it.  You’ve seen it.  A book comes out in 7.99 mass market and you can buy it for less in eBook.  But there are some publishers who insist on sticking to the same price across the board.

So I’m asking readers – how important is price to you when trying a new author? A tried and true author, I’m hoping you’ll spend the money because you know what you’re getting.  But if a reader who has never read Carly Phillips can only get her for 7.99 – will they try? Or will they say, I can get two books for that price on Amazon?

Just food for thought.  And I’d like your opinion!

Chillow

If you’ve been on this blog for any amount of time you know I am a headache person.  I get them often.  Big ones, small ones, annoying ones, aching ones.  Headaches in my eyes, headaches in the back of my head.  Migraines, tension headaches, etc.  To get rid of headaches, it helps to put something cold on your forehead.  I grew up using a wash cloth that was dipped in ice cold water and wrung out, on my forehead.  Now I buy a version of Migraine Ice called Wellpatch for Migraine – it’s a strip that sticks on the forehead and stays cool.  It helps a lot.  But I also started using ice packs that I keep in the freezer, and if I wake up in pain, I wrap an ice pack in an old soft tee-shirt and put it on the back of my neck.  Recently I saw an ad on TV for something called a Chillow.  It comes in regular pillow size and mini size.  Basically you fill it with water, let it set for 4 hours, let the air bubbles out, and VOILA! You have a pillow that stays cool.  I fall asleep on it.  I usually slide it away from me in the middle of the night so when I wake up and need it most, I just pull it back under me. I can lay on my side and hit the correct spot on my temple, or lay on my back and let it soothe my neck.  Whether you’re a headache person or you just prefer a cool place to lay your head, this is for you! The full size is 24.95 and the mini is 19.95 on Amazon.  I had bought both and discovered the mini is just perfect and easier to sleep on!  Here’s my tester.  Bailey loves it too!  Are you a headache person or do you just like a cold pillow? Or could you care less, LOL!?
