A Brave New World

Carly Icon

And no, for once I’m not talking about publishing! A year and a half ago, (give or take) fans of daytime television lost their favorites, ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE. GENERAL HOSPITAL, the only soap opera left, was hanging on by a thread. The powers that be at ABC, the network that was home to these beloved shows, replaced them with shows like The Chew and The Revolution. Soap Fans refused to watch anything on daytime on ABC except for GH in an effort to save it. A full scale war was waged to bring the two soaps back — and soon came news, a company called Prospect Park, purchased the shows and promised to bring them to the INTERNET soon after they ended on TV. Sadly, the underestimated the cost and their ability, the need to negotiate with actors’ unions, etc. The project ended up dead in the water … or so we thought. IN the meantime, GH went on – they brought over the Producer of ONE LIFE TO LIVE, Frank Valenti (ironically at the time the show went off the air, OLTL’s ratings were stronger than ever), along with the show’s head writer, Ron Carlivati. The 50th Anniversary of GH loomed and everyone wondered if the soap would be around to see it.

And then a funny thing happened – something soap lovers could have told you would happen – the first show on ABC (The Revolution) was canceled. The man who axed our soaps, Brian Fons, (He Who Shall Not Be Named) was axed. And GENERAL HOSPITAL WAS ON FIRE – stories were running at full speed, you couldn’t wait to tune in – NOT TO BE MISSED TV – and the 50th Anniversary became something everyone couldn’t wait to see because they brought back ALL FAN FAVORITES and integrated them into real stories — Luke was already there — add Laura and Scotty. Felicia came back to Mac and soon … Frisco came back to Felicia — and his only living daughter, Maxie. But then … GH didn’t bombard us with the old fan faves at the expense of characters we were already watching – everything integrated. Clicked. Like a well run machine.

And then came the BIGGER NEWS – PROSPECT PARK REVIVED THEIR PLAN TO BRING THE SOAPS TO THE INTERNET – nobody believed it … even the actors were skeptical – but then things started to fall into place. We began to read about how the big names from the soaps had signed on. So had the not as big names but characters we loved. Buzz. Excitement. Reality? YES! They began shooting in a studio in Connecticut – and finally today arrived. I’m writing this on Monday, the first day the shows went live.

I had to admit I was skeptical. I wasn’t sure I’d be into it on the computer … or streaming it on TV. Lots of confusion about how to watch (I’ll lay that out for you next) — but sure enough, I woke up this morning, and watched ALL MY CHILDREN on my iPHONE! I wasn’t just hooked again – I was IMPRESSED. The words I’d use to describe this show now? REAL. ALIVE. TECHNO. Fantastic camera use, the way we watch them, they are in HD and alive. Hot. Their joy and happiness to be back is tangible and infectious! I feel it too. I’m so happy for them, for me as a soap fan, for the new medium they are launching.

Then this afternoon, I watched ONE LIFE TO LIVE – and OH. MY. GOD. Same thing. So sexy. It’s not TV. NO FCC Regs. You can feel the excitement. And I will leave you with one word before I tell you how to watch. CLIFF HANGER not to be believed from Monday. I can’t wait for more!!!!!!!!

HOW TO WATCH THE NEW WORLD OF ALL MY CHILDREN AND ONE LIFE TO LIVE:

especially # 4 which is FREE –

Since Julie brought up this new publishing world, (Click HERE if you missed the post) I guess I’m wondering – were you aware of the major shift or is it just authors who know what’s going on behind the scenes? Just curious! Answer for a chance to win! And of course feel free to give your opinions!

New Publishing cont.

Carly Icon

First KUDOS to Julie for yesterday’s post. As authors, we know we are living in a new publishing world, but our readers don’t really grasp what we’re going through and yesterday’s post was an awesome explanation. Although I’m still writing for traditional publishers, right now that’s the last book in the Serendipity series, I’m also experimenting with bringing you my backlist books that I have the rights to, and maybe writing something new. Yes, that’s a potential tease.

For now, I’m thrilled to say that you can now buy TRULY MADLY DEEPLY everywhere! Or you can wait until my three day discount in May — though the current price is — $4.99 for three full length books.

A Carly Phillips Collection!

Carly Icon

TRULY MADLY DEEPLY!

Many of you have already read my earlier books, Perfect Partners, The Right Choice and Solitary Man. Many of you missed them in print and read them in eBook. Some haven’t read them yet, others love collectors editions. And so many more of asked if you could get them in print. Now I have a whole host of options for you!

TRULY MADLY DEEPLY

A Carly Phillips (eBook) Collection

Three full length novels originally written and published in 1999 and 2000 and available now in one e-volume for $ 4. 99.

NOTE – honestly I’ll be discounting the collection in the upcoming weeks. Just not sure when — but if you can’t wait … :) I’ll be eternally grateful if you’d buy and write reviews at Amazon. No pressure, but it helps.

PROBLEM – the eBook collection is ONLY available at Amazon and will be at Kobo any day. BN is NOT playing nice with me – won’t let me open an account or reply to my emails. Until they do, I can’t sell the book there for Nook – but this is NOT my choice. I am sending them two emails a day. iTunes is taking forever to approve my account, so same thing there. I’m sorry but those are out of my control but there are other options!

AMAZON eBOOK – CLICK HERE

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C...

TRULY MADLY DEEPLY – PRINT

A Carly Phillips Collection – in print for the very first time! I’ve often had to explain it’s cost prohibitive to offer a print book without a publisher – but now, with three books in one, you can get all 3 FULL LENGTH NOVELS in Trade Paperback – with GORGEOUS glossy cover for $14.99. It’s so pretty I’m ordering one for myself and for my mom! :)

Right now you can purchase at CREATESPACE but later today or tomorrow it should be available at other online retail outlets!

CREATESPACE BOOK – CLICK HERE

WEEKEND OF LEGEND 3 – #WOL 3 – I Write – You Win!

Carly Icon

First, HAPPY 17th BIRTHDAY to my daughter JENNIFER!!!! There were a lot of adorable but you’d consider them embarrassing pics so I went with one you could live with. Because it’s your day and all. I love you! xoxo

Now – Not sure if you remember WEEKEND OF LEGEND 2 back in December — when a bunch of crazy authors wrote all weekend — and gave away prizes as they hit certain page counts? Well. WE’RE BACK. (I’ll update which authors are participating on Friday!)

*I say crazy b/c I ended up w/a massive working too hard migraine – but the huge page count I accumulated made it worthwhile – either that or I forgot the pain and am willing to try again!

WEEKEND OF LEGEND 3 – #WOL3

It’s mainly TWITTER based – I’m sorry for that – but it’s an immediate – as we work kind of thing – and Twitter is the most immediate form of social media/way to reach you guys on the minute.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

My goal is 15 k – 50 pages give or take – I’ll give out prizes every random 5K and random contests – :)

Here’s the main info you’ll need –

1. this is a TWITTER contest so yes, you will need a twitter account to play. And this is a fun chance to test out Twitter if you’ve never tried before, so go get an account! It’s free. To be entered in the contests we’ll be running all weekend you will need to (@ reply) – reply to – one or all of us using #WOL3 tag so we can find the responses among all the others to separate out to choose a winner.

All Participants and Twitter URL’s:

Carly Phillips: @carlyphillips

Jeri Smith-Ready: @jsmithready

Megan Hart: @Megan_Hart

Chloe Neill: @chloeneill

Tessa Dare: @TessaDare

I’ll post everyone else’s on Friday AM but as long as you have mine and #WOL3 you’ll be fine.

2. We will be checking in every certain amount of words written and awarding prizes once we hit every word goal – again, more info Friday but wanted to give you a heads up!

3. Some of us will be running random contests as well, so keep an eye on that hashtag!

4. The #WOL3 contest will run from noon pacific/3 eastern, Friday Dec. 7 through midnight Eastern Sunday, Dec. 9. I won’t be there all the time – but you’ll know when I’m live and working/tweeting, trust me!

5. Contests will be open to international entries unless otherwise indicated (iTunes has geographical limits, for instance)

What are we giving away you ask? For me – gift cards – for the others? Books and who knows!

We’ll see you on twitter this weekend :)

So who intends to play? Who’s a brave newbie willing to try Twitter?

No Wearing White Before Memorial Day …

Carly Icon

And not after Labor Day. Who the heck thought up these rules? And the better question is WHY? That said, I admit I’ve always adhered to the rules. I live in New York where we have seasons – Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. I embrace each season for what I love about it –

Winter - I love the snowy days where there’s no school, we can all sleep in, and watch the white stuff fall from the warmth of the house.

Spring – The first hint of warm weather means we can get rid of the heavy winter clothes and the clothing that is starting to feel old, ratty and just plain tired. Flip flops, short sleeves, and SUNLIGHT!

Summer – Not so sure what I love about the crazy heat … but I know I can sleep later because the kids are out of school, so … yay!

Fall – My favorite season because of the cool breeze, the smell of autumn, the slightly heavier clothes … I love it.

But along with the seasons comes those pesky rules. Now maybe it’s because I’ve always been a good girl who does what she’s told, and I was always told, no white before Memorial Day and no white after Labor Day. Somehow that no white rule translated over time to no pastels, linen, ultra light colors in shoes or handbags … and I say NO MORE!

Apparently there are “etiquette” websites (I won’t name names) that inform you that you can ONLY violate these rules if you want to be a fashion disaster. Well, we had our first hint of Spring this week – 70 and 80 degree temps for two/three days before it dropped again to the low 50′s with rain. On those warm days, when it felt right, out came my new light pink handbag, pink shoes with white trim, and NO JACKET.

So there.

What about you? Do you wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day? Pastels, linen and other light fabrics?
