Hello Ipswich--allez les blues!
I feel it is the books and Winston's storytelling that is the key.
Of course our go-round and its popularity at the time has meant that in TV terms it was not an unknown, untested thing.

Andrew may know the answer--Winston never mentioned him to me.

Not really--though when i see people round me tucking into a delicious looking pizza...
On our yearly jaunt to Italy we stopover in San Remo. There's a pizzeria near the hotel which has the most wonderful wholewheat numbers and I find myself ordering one--usually with tomatoes and anchovies. There now!

Anita,
To make changes is never easy and it's a shock when you are diagnosed at first.
I suppose a sweet tooth doesn't help.
I never did have one and that was helpful.
The med way of eating is so delicious that if you give it a chance you may in the end not miss those things you thought you would miss.

Hi Kathy--lovely to hear from you.
Don't remember there being a todo back then.
No social media of course and the celebrity culture was only getting going.
But it is as you say 40 years ago and my memory is selective now perhaps.
Say a big hello to Dave--hope you are all in good form.

I believe H Carter was gay though I didn't know that at the time. There was no romance in the film though I remember filming a dinner scene with Eva Marie Saint who was playing a fictional journalist. What a privilege that was.

Martha--I always liked to cook. As a single man I cooked meals for myself at home which might take me an hour and then gobbled them down in five minutes!
The diagnosis usefully gave me a hook for a book in a world with too many cookbooks.

(view spoiler)[Hi Sharon.
So I don't remember Angharad knocking me down either--though Ross deserved it.
She invited Capt. McNeil up to he room but couldn't go through with it.
The coming storyline with the young man I can't remember in detail. (hide spoiler)]

Hello Steve.
It was an extraordinary experience and because everybody was so welcoming a very enjoyable one.
It's the story and the characters that Winston so carefully crafted.

I said I think that Bella was an extraordinary achievement for Winston aged 92. I got the feeling he'd fallen in love with his heroine--as he'd done all those years ago with Demelza. I'd love to do the scene in Bella where Ross attends the performance of Hamlet at the Old Vic--where his daughter is playing Ophelia.

Hello Lynn--yes I have been "checked out"!
Thanks to your Demelza too!

I don't remember having to eat the pie, Mary! Pilchards and sardines are a favourite food though, so it might not have been so bad, No pastry now for me. I cook sat=rdines often in the summer here--love 'em!

Hi Holly!! The Reverend Dr. Halse--a nasty piece of work--polar opposite to Ross. Member of "the establishment". Ruthless upholder of the status quo. Horrible Halse was fun to play in scenes where 40 years ago I'd played the other character--Ross!

The extraordinary feeling of continuity and connection with something major in my life. Plus the added attraction of not having too much responsibility second time around!

Hi, Toni--always a problem. It's summer here so the vegetables are piling high on the stalls. Big salads with tasty dressing are good. We had a gathering last Sunday of nine people and I cook pasta (100g each) with a tomato sauce:
From Delicious Dishes for Diabetics
Penne with Rosemary and Balsamic Vinegar
Serves 4
This is another one adapted from Marcella’s Kitchen and is a year-round wonder. It is quick and simple to do and has a distinctive earthy flavour, thanks to the rosemary. It’s worth taking care to slice the garlic very thinly.
4 cloves of garlic – very thinly sliced
8 tbsp olive oil
2 sprigs rosemary or 21⁄2 tsp dried rosemary
600 g/20 oz tinned tomatoes, i.e. a large tin – drained of juice salt and pepper
400 g/14 oz penne or farfalle or mix of the two
2 tsp balsamic vinegar
Sauté the garlic gently in the oil with the rosemary (if using fresh) until the garlic sizzles.
Add the tomatoes, salt and plenty of pepper. If using dried rosemary, add it with the tomatoes. Cook for 10–15 minutes. Cook the pasta in well salted water.
Drain the pasta and add to the sauce. Cook a minute or two – turning the pasta in the sauce. Turn off the heat and make a well in the middle of the pasta and add the balsamic vinegar. Again turn the pasta thoroughly in the sauce.
Serve with fresh grated Parmesan cheese.
I made two lots of the recipe which easily served 9
There are plenty of recipes in my two books that are not expensive and as above if you make two lots you've a meal for ten.

Well, Catrin, I'd be sad not to eat pasta ever again--though in its refined form it is not great for diabetics. We eat wholewheat pasta once a week.

Hi Fabo--it certainly gave me the taste. The company, the challenge, the travel etc reminded me of how I lived for many years. I am very happy living with my dear and wonderful wife, Meredith, here in SW France... but if someone offered me a part in a film or tv I would have to think seriously about it! The stage is too complicated in lifestyle terms.

THE Good Soldier was a challenge and a pleasure to work on with Jeremy Brett, Susan Fleetwood and Vickery Turner.
