hmmm...Julia hates the song Closer from NIN. Closer is from the album "Downward Spiral". Downward Spiral represents the 9 circles of hell. Oh jeez.. leave NIN alone.

Paraphrasing from Somewhere I have never travelled by E.E. Cummings. Finally, something I like about this book. I love this poem.

As you may have noticed from my other updates, I am NOT enjoying this book. I refuse to turn Gabriel, the ass, into a tortured hero. I don't care how screwed up your childhood was, you don't have a right to treat anyone the way Gabriel treats Julia and earn anything from me other than my dislike.

"He NOTICED the water that was continuing to stream off her, then he BEGAN to NOTICE the clothes that were under the water, and then he BEGAN to NOTICE what was under her clothes..." (emphasis is mine). uhhhh... ok. Like I said, I'm not, in any way, a writer. In fact, it is my worst skill but.... what is wrong with this sentence?

"Would you stop fussing with that ridiculous abomination of a bag and sit in a chair like a human being?"

So, I'm supposed to develop warm, fuzzy feelings for this asshole. And wtf does sitting in a chair have to do with being human? grrr.. I'm so disliking Gabriel.

"Purposefully, she neglected to mention where she was living and what she was doing, and she sent the e-mail from her Gmail account rather than her university account." Purposefully, she neglected??? I'm horrible at grammar but that is such an odd sentence.

Wendy Darling My friend Missie said the same thing, too! The ratings are phenomenal for this book, it's so interesting to see both your reactions.

I'm going to keep reading just to see what I'm missing. :(

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) When you have a chance you should read Juliana's review. I believe she didn't like it, either.

I read her review and now that I've read 25% of the book, I 100% agree with everything she wrote.

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) There's a Linda Howard book that made me feel the same way. It's very popular,(lots of 5 star reviews), but I thought the alpha hero was a mega a-hole so I'm feelin' ya. ;o)

I'm determined to read this book to its end just to see if something magical happens and I fall head over heels in love with it. So far, I still can't stand it.

Linda Howard is an interesting author. I love some of her books, others.. I couldn't get into.

Wendy Darling I totally agree on Linda Howard! Have you read her latest book Prey? It's virtually unreadable.

Nope. I can't read her recent books. They don't work for me. That's too bad though!

AH I think the 389 5 star reviews are from people who read the fanfic. It was one of the better fanfics out at that time. Not saying it's great, I haven't read the final version so I can't tell.

I think she might be going crazy.

And it is too bad, I love a lot of her earlier stuff.

So do they rate it in comparison to Twilight? Or do they rate it in comparison to other fanfic? Me confused.

I have lots of her older stuff. She's always a favorite of my employees. I think because her books cross lots of genres. I don't think I've read a book of hers in 2 years. It is too bad.

AH I think - and I'll only speak for myself - a lot of the Twi fans at the time were looking for more Bella and Edward stories, more mature stories. There was a lot of junk out there, but there were 4 or 5 stories that stood out. A few have been published, some should have been published, and a lot were not up to par. When you read a fanfic, it is usually a different experience - fanfics are serialized and updated weekly, there are discussion groups, and a lot of author/fan interaction. When a book is finally published, there is a completely different set of expectations and a new audience to work with.

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) I like some of Linda Howard's work, especially Death Angel, but I hate, hated, HATED After the Night.

The heroine was a co-dependent doormat, ie, "I know my home-wrecker ho momma slept with his daddy so I accept that he ran me out of town and wants to set me up as his mistress." The "hero" was a pr*ck, ie, "Her trashy momma slept with my daddy so I gotta treat her like trash, even though it isn't her fault, to protect my momma and sister. So, I will set her up as my mistress out-of-town cuz I really have to f*ck her brains out, like now!" [Note: not direct quotes from book.]

And, no, I haven't read Prey. I will still read Linda Howard's books in the hope of more stories like Death Angel.

I've read some fan fiction on a forum before but never really got into it. I did enjoy Fifty Shades of Grey so I guess I do like some fan fiction, if that is still considered fan fiction.

I guess I'm stumped by this book in itself because I have so many issues with it and everything I dislike is what others seem to enjoy.

Rather than question other's high rating of the book, I find myself questioning why I dislike it so much.

Missie 389 5 star reviews. I cannot stand this book. What am I missing?

I felt like a complete tool for not liking this story. Glad I'm not alone.

Not at all! We might be the minority but we definitely agree w/ each other.
