hmmm...Julia hates the song Closer from NIN. Closer is from the album "Downward Spiral". Downward Spiral represents the 9 circles of hell. Oh jeez.. leave NIN alone.

Paraphrasing from Somewhere I have never travelled by E.E. Cummings. Finally, something I like about this book. I love this poem.

As you may have noticed from my other updates, I am NOT enjoying this book. I refuse to turn Gabriel, the ass, into a tortured hero. I don't care how screwed up your childhood was, you don't have a right to treat anyone the way Gabriel treats Julia and earn anything from me other than my dislike.

"He NOTICED the water that was continuing to stream off her, then he BEGAN to NOTICE the clothes that were under the water, and then he BEGAN to NOTICE what was under her clothes..." (emphasis is mine). uhhhh... ok. Like I said, I'm not, in any way, a writer. In fact, it is my worst skill but.... what is wrong with this sentence?

"Would you stop fussing with that ridiculous abomination of a bag and sit in a chair like a human being?"
So, I'm supposed to develop warm, fuzzy feelings for this asshole. And wtf does sitting in a chair have to do with being human? grrr.. I'm so disliking Gabriel.

"Purposefully, she neglected to mention where she was living and what she was doing, and she sent the e-mail from her Gmail account rather than her university account." Purposefully, she neglected??? I'm horrible at grammar but that is such an odd sentence.

The author has a dislike of everything NIN. Even his comment in the book about a character liking one song where trent reznor did backup vocals (to Tori Amos) makes it seem that the author put the comment in there to soften the various other negative comments about NIN and the group's music.
The author has a real preoccupation of either showing his like of various artists and his/her works or in this case, his dislike.

I love the song. Of course, I now have it in my head (not a good song to sing while at work). So to torture you all (I know, I'm naughty), and to share the mysterious lyrics with anyone not familiar with Closer... here are part of the lyrics...
You let me violate you
You let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you
You let me complicate you
Help me; I broke apart my insides
Help me; i've got no soul to sell
Help me; the only thing that works for me
Help me get away from myself
I wanna fuck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed

Dang it, Michelle! Now this song is stuck in my head. LOL

I know. I would say I'm sorry but there is something very naughty about having everyone singing this song.

My favorite lyrics to this song:
You can have my isolation
You can have the hate that it brings
Something so profound about that, I can't even formulate the proper words. For some reason those lyrics always touch me. I love NIN. I need to post a pic of my forearm NIN tatt. :-) Trent rocks my socks.

You can have my isolation; you can have the hate that it brings
You can have my absence of faith; you can have my everything
Help me tear down my reason
Help me; it's your sex I can smell
Help me; you make me perfect
Help me become somebody else
You get me closer to God
Through every forest, above the trees
Within my stomach, scraped off my knees
I drink the honey inside your hive
You are the reason I stay alive
See, we all appreciate the haunting sensuality, raw sexuality, and the animalistic feelings this song invokes.

Exactly to both of you! (LOL). Moreover, if you do not take a literal meaning of the words in the song and go deeper, there is so much more to this song and NIN's other songs.
I find it hypocritical that the author in this book spends so much time impressing us with his vast knowledge of classic literature, poems, art, and music but then takes a literal meaning to the lyrics in one modern song.
I was a very good student in school and professors, experts and others guided me on what to read, what to listen to, and what I am supposed to like. I could probably spew my knowledge with the best of them (more likely in person since I have writing issues) but I do not. I would rather be known for my horrible sense of humor and for being a nice human being.
What I really value is beautiful, touching or haunting lyrics, writings, art, where it the meaning/beauty is not blatantly obvious. Its one thing to be told what is beautiful, artistic, and classy; it is another to be able to find it on our own.
I’m officially done ranting. This book just is not for me. I’m quitting at 50%.

Say whaaa??? I think Trent Reznor is a gift from baby Jesus. His musical brilliance and profound artistry...dayum. Just...dayum. Not everyone has to like his music, of course. But it baffles me when someone actively abhors his work.
