it’s thrilling just 30 pages in with 200 left you have no idea how the writer is going to develop the story

the author quotes Joseph Whitley saying to his daughter, “We are fearfully and wonderfully made,” without attribution— I wonder if he realizes Mr. Whitley was himself quoting Psalm 139?

“loosely fictionalized” would mean close to the truth— not ‘portrayed casually’ as he means here of Jack Nicholson’s character in The Departed.

Mr. Smith is often careless.

missing articles, convoluted constructions, insistent tics (why “varietal” where “variety” will do?), and shoehorning in his grudges— this is a poorly written book, all the worse because the writer believes he’s clever.

Aimee Semple McPherson died at 54, not 44.

Little errors like these diminish the authority of the prose, which is as evangelically certain as the preachers it’s decrying.

now he derides The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford, a film considered by many among the finest of this young century. I hate this kind of drive-by slagging-off. it’s supposed to make the reader think the writer is sophisticated, when what it actually does is reveal that he mistakes prejudice for opinion.

the movie he references here isn’t about “Christians,” specifically. It’s called Night Crossing and it was produced by Disney

the Ctrl + Alt + Delete chapter enters Chuck’s pantheon…

I think the key to appreciating Klosterman is understanding that he’s not trying to settle any question— he’s just trying to get us to understand his subjects in a new and/or more revealing sense.
