Mr. Spitz’ telling is, at times, unintentionally hilarious. Here he is, directly following a paragraph of unbridled debauchery, the drinks ever-flowing and the band’s exploitative sexual license:

“At times, it got out of hand.”

Ya think?

Mr. Spetz just called Frank Tashlin’s The Girl Can’t Help It, with Tony Randall and Jayne Mansfield, “another shoddy B-movie that was nothing but a pretense for the music.”

I’m not even a huge Tashlin fan but that is some lazy journalism. If it much continues in this vein I’ll be forced to abandon.

really hope Bryce Dallas Howard didn’t actually read this memoir for which she wrote the introduction, because that would make it easier to understand why the section about her dad’s adolescent masturbatory habits— and another about her grandparents’ sex lives —weren’t excised.

serious misstep with Marion. it’s like Franzen can’t imagine a married woman with children could have an interior life

I can’t tell if it’s Franzen or his characters who thinks religion is merely a dispenser of morality

ages & experiences of the characters are unclear, inconsistent with each other

what does this mean? “specifically sad”? “aware of death at all times”?

There’s at least three books in here— none of them good like this.

in many places it’s carelessly written: America’s Got Talent is not a CBS show. this piddly inaccuracy does not matter *except* that when you’re trying to evoke the world ending it should be the world as it existed.,,
