Okay, so maybe I have this. Peregrine made a deal with the witch's daughter, and she cursed him to take her place under her mother's glare. Then Jack woodcutter blinded the mother, making it so peregrine can escape, but he doesn't because of Betwixt. I'm assuming all of this takes place prior to this book? But hopefully this is enough to get through.

Feeling kinda stupid. What the Effie crap is going on with Peregrine and the witch lady? Is this something I forget from the last book? Because I am seriously floundering through his chapters...

Why do I continue to pick up Dashner's books? He's doing the same crap in this one that made me DNF Maze Runner. Having a new vocabulary is fine, but you have to introduce it in context or it's just a random scattering of letters. Don't throw fake words at me--it comes across as cocky, like "See, I can make my own words, aren't I a clever boy?"

Random question: every zombie book/movie/show I've ever seen has the same trope: "what in the world is going on? What's happening? This is something brand new I've never seen before!" Night of the Living Dead came out in 1968--do you seriously not know a zombie when you see one in this day and age?

I see a lot of stuff in reviews about the MC and friends being racist. If you closely read it, they aren't. They know their mostly white school staff and admin are fairly racist, and they make comments based on how wrong they think it is. I have worked for schools like this and frankly he's dead-on regarding how open-minded students react.

I am loving the illustrations on the chapter "title" pages that give you time as it progresses. Such a cool touch.

I love Chantal's dream sequence! She's in a relationship with a sentence, which is just recently translated into English. When she tries to read it into the Library of Congress to save it, she finds out she can't read anymore. Only from the mind if Neil Gaiman.

Fake love issues and jealousy: catering to the masses who can't handle actual interesting things since that godawful Twicrap series. Ahh, the big Planet of the Apes-esque reveal that was not at all surprising thanks to poor cover design choices and incredibly obvious hints. A sad and unfortunate disappointment.

This book is quite dark compared to Shipbreaker, which is a major feat considering the heaviness of Shipbreaker. Lots of satirical political commentary that I think kids might miss.

So far, a bit skippy and disjointed plotwise, but this dude has a serious talent for making me reread sentences for the pure beauty of the language. That's a gift, and one I fully appreciate as a reader.
