Christopher is on page 63 of 368 of The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara
Edgardo's abduction by the Pope's minions was hardly an isolated incident. There were many cases of Catholics insinuating themselves into the lives of Jews to baptize their children. Filled with anecdotes and citations, this is fast becoming a favorite.

This feels like Will Durant-style history. I'm liking this one so far, but it is not Durant.

This book is just so laughably polemically biased that it seems pointless even to continue. This is painful.

I am very much enjoying this; indeed, so much so that I am flabbergasted by the low rating! It deserves maybe, to be fair, a 3.8ish overall rating. It is a very interesting subject, one which is almost totally overlooked in other works of history, to the loss of those works. A bloody portrait of the human species.

Very dry. Just a list of names and dates, very little personality. Difficult to want to read, but I'm persevering - if only for Volume 1.

This has been a very enjoyable ride, and I am sorry to see that the end is nigh. Where else would one go to learn that Asian women tend to get supernumerary nipples above the regular ones, while Europeans get theirs below, and that some women suckle their babies from breasts on their thighs?

I am really liking this so far. Unlike almost every other book on the "ancient world" that I have ever seen, Susan Wise Bauer does not forget that there was a whole world outside Mesopotamia and Egypt.

Four days reading a single, 80-page chapter! And yet what a chapter it was! Should've been double the length, no less.

One could just as easily write a book entitled, "How the Catholic Church Hindered Western Civilization". To claim that it SAVED Western civilization requires a lot more evidence than merely listing a bunch of names of Catholics who served to advance science and scholarship. Besides, a like number of non-Catholic clergy names could also be given.
