So far, this is phenomenal. Best sci-fi I've encountered in ages. It has the sense of purpose, the incisiveness, the imagination of the best of sci-fi of the last two centuries. I'd be amazed if some of the blame for the low rating falls on the far right, given their tendency to attack anything by women, especially of color, as well as anything not directly condemnatory of communism when the issue is broached

As fucked up as a book can be. But surprisingly well imagined, in a disturbing way. Every body part is described as being "scarred".

Lloyd Alexander had a spectacular gift for getting into the head of a child.

The first Gaiman novel I've only ever felt was simply okay. To similar to his others, which also happen to be better, at least so far.

Incredible. I've no clue where it's going to go from here. Such emotion, such truth, such anger. It is also quite prescient, or maybe that's what was understood by the time this book was written.

牛若 set his relative's house on fire while they were all asleep because they sent him to sleep in the servants' quarters! Well, because he wanted their loyalty and learned through that disrespect that they weren't offering it. But still...

Page 70! Those last ten pages were SO hard, I had to read and reread, only got through like two pages a day! I'm going to have so much Japanese history and geography in my head, but it's all gonna be in Chinese! I could read about all these people in English and never know I know them intimately in Chinese.

Finally out of the basics, parts of speech, and on to the basics of sentence construction.

A little hard to keep track of just what is going on. Kane is referred to as he or as she at different times, though that's a puzzle that finally I've cracked. So much is going on, it's wonderful.

Gotten pretty good over the last hundred pages. Finally feels like classic King, rather than just modern crime King.

The second book of the tetralogy is such a turnaround. We went from beautiful, believable conversations and charming descriptions to this idiotic dialogue that sounds like the discussions of imaginary angel philosophers put into the mouths of babes and constant repetition of the main idea that more time separates characters than the Bible says despite the characters themselves being ignorant of this. From 5 to 1 star

I read Chinese every day. Every day I am shocked, simply flabbergasted, to look at a sentence in Chinese and actually understand it. It's been a year since I picked up this ability, which still requires much more practice, and yet the sense of awe and wonder never diminish.
